Freyr — Vanir Lord of Peace, Good Seasons & Prosperity

Freyr, Vanir lord of peace, good seasons, prosperity and Álfheim
Freyr, Lord of Good Seasons. Vanir prince of rain, sunlight, peace and the fruitfulness of the earth.

Freyr is one of the great Vanir powers: son of Njörðr, brother of Freyja, ruler of Álfheim and giver of peace, good seasons and prosperity. Rain, the shining sun and the fruit of the earth answer his authority. His most consequential choice was personal: he gave Skírnir the sword that fought by itself so the messenger could win Gerðr for him. Freyr gained the woman he loved and lost the weapon prophecy says he will need when Surtr comes at Ragnarök.

Divine Mechanics

Freyr in Play

Freyr’s encounter identity is abundance, peace, battlefield weather and power without the divine sword he surrendered. He controls the conditions in which a battle happens: sunlight, rain, living terrain, morale, food, healing and movement. When forced into direct combat he fights with raw divine strength, a hart’s horn, Gullinbursti and the landscape rather than quietly pretending the lost sword never mattered.

Divine Traits

Divine Nature. Freyr requires no air, food, drink or sleep. He does not age.

Greater Deity — Divine Rank 18. Lower-rank effects cannot permanently sever Freyr from his authority over good seasons, prosperity, Álfheim, Skíðblaðnir or Gullinbursti.

Legendary Resistance (6/Day). If Freyr fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. Freyr has Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.

Lord of Good Seasons. The ground within 60 feet of Freyr is fertile divine terrain. Allies of his choice that start their turn there gain 15 Temporary Hit Points and ignore nonmagical Difficult Terrain. Hostile magic that creates famine, blight or withering vegetation fails inside the aura unless produced by an Artifact or equal-or-higher divine rank.

Peace Before Blood. The first time in an encounter a creature of lower divine rank willingly attacks Freyr or one of his non-hostile allies within 60 feet, it must succeed on a DC 35 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure it loses that hostile action and may take another action instead.

The Sword Is Gone. Freyr does not possess the self-fighting sword he gave Skírnir. He cannot summon or recreate it with wish, Alter Reality or ordinary divine magic while that gift remains valid.

Beli-Slayer. Freyr’s unarmed strikes and attacks with a natural horn or antler count as divine magical weapons and deal full damage to Giants and Titanic creatures.

Divine Immortality. Reducing Freyr to 0 Hit Points defeats his present body but does not permanently destroy him without a divine-death condition. His foretold death to Surtr can satisfy one.

Divine Spellcasting

Freyr casts spells using Wisdom (spell save DC 35, +27 to hit with spell attacks). He requires no Material components.

At Will: any Cleric or Freyr-granted spell of 5th level or lower.
3/Day Each: any Cleric or Freyr-granted spell of 6th–8th level.
1/Day Each: any Cleric or Freyr-granted spell of 9th level.

Actions

Multiattack. Freyr makes three Hart-Horn attacks, or two Hart-Horn attacks and uses Turn the Season.

Hart-Horn. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +27 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 180 ft. Hit: 36 (4d10 + 14) Piercing plus 36 (8d8) Radiant damage. Against a Giant, Fiend or creature of Muspell, add 27 (6d8) Force damage.

Turn the Season (Recharge 4–6). Freyr chooses one effect within 180 feet: Shining Sun deals 88 (16d10) Radiant damage in a 30-foot radius, Constitution DC 35 half; Life-Giving Rain heals allies in a 40-foot radius for 55 (10d10) and ends one disease or poison; Fruitful Earth forces enemies in a 40-foot radius to make a DC 35 Strength save or become Restrained until the end of their next turn.

Abundance Without End (1/Day). For 1 minute a 60-foot-radius field around Freyr restores 30 Hit Points to an allied creature when it starts its turn there, once per creature per round, and prevents Exhaustion from increasing.

Call Skíðblaðnir (1/Day). The foldable ship unfolds nearby. For 8 hours it carries Freyr and up to 100 passengers, always has a favourable wind, sails air and sea, and can travel between linked worlds of Yggdrasill. When dismissed it folds small enough for Freyr’s pouch.

Bonus Action

Call Gullinbursti. Freyr calls the golden-bristled boar within 30 feet. While mounted, Freyr has Speed 120 ft. and Fly 120 ft. Once per turn after moving 30 feet straight toward a target, the target makes a DC 35 Strength save or takes 36 (8d8) Force damage and falls Prone.

Reaction

Let Peace Hold. When a creature within 120 feet makes a hostile attack, Freyr imposes Disadvantage. If it misses, that creature cannot make another attack until the start of its next turn unless one of Freyr’s allies damages it first.

Legendary Actions — 4 Uses

  • Green Step. Freyr moves up to half his Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
  • Hart-Horn. Freyr makes one Hart-Horn attack.
  • Rain on the Wounded (Costs 2). Up to three allies within 120 feet regain 30 Hit Points.
  • Golden Boar Charge (Costs 2). Gullinbursti moves up to 60 feet through enemy spaces; each crossed enemy makes DC 35 Dexterity save or takes 33 (6d10) Force damage.
  • Peace of the Vanir (Costs 3). Enemies within 60 feet make DC 35 Wisdom saves or cannot attack or cast damaging spells until the end of their next turn.

Divine Realm Actions — Álfheim

  • Summer in an Instant. Cold, magical winter and non-divine blight end in a 100-foot-radius area.
  • Elven Roads Open. Up to eight allies Freyr perceives teleport between two points in Álfheim.
  • Harvest Without Reaping. Allies Freyr chooses regain 50 Hit Points; food and drink in the realm become wholesome and plentiful.

Skíðblaðnir — 5.5e

Vehicle, Artifact. The ship always receives the wind it needs, can carry a divine host, and folds small enough to be kept in a pouch.

Gullinbursti — 5.5e

Large Celestial, unique divine companion. The golden-bristled boar runs through air and water faster than ordinary horses and lights the darkness around it.

Freyr — Pathfinder 1e

Skidbladnir, the Folding Longship

Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) Title: The Viking Ship Date 1883-84.
Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) Title: The Viking Ship Date 1883-84.

Skidbladnir was created by the dwarven brothers Brokk and Sindri, the sons of Ivaldi. A truly wondrous creation, this beautiful, gold-inlaid
Viking longship can hold all the gods, their weapons and their steeds for a journey of any duration. Originally it belonged to Loki, but was given to Freyr as part of Loki’s reparation for the theft of Sif’s golden hair. The ship was big enough to hold the whole of the host of Asgard, and whenever the sails were hoisted, a fair wind followed. It could travel over both land and sea. Skioblaonir was made by so many parts and with such ingenuity that it could be folded like a cloth and carried in one’s pouch.

Skidbladnir has the following powers:

-The owner, with a command word, can cause the ship to fold in upon itself till it is no larger than your fist. Repeating the command word reverses the process.

-The Folding Longship travels twice the speed of a normal longship under similar conditions and can cut through solid earth as easily as the waves.

-Regardless of weather or magic, Skidbladnir always has a Favorable Wind.

-The ship has fire resistance 30.

Gullinbursti (Freyr’s Boar)

When Loki had Sif’s hair, Freyr’s ship Skíðblaðnir and Odin’s spear Gungnir fashioned by the Sons of Ivaldi, he bet his own head with Brokkr that his brother Eitri (Sindri) wouldn’t have been able to make items to match the quality of those mentioned above.

So to make gifts to Freyr, Eitri threw a pig’s skin into a furnace as Brokkr worked on the bellows, and together they manufactured the boar Gullinbursti which had bristles in its mane that glowed in the dark.

Roleplaying

Gullinbursti is the golden bristled boar crafted by the dwarves Brokk and Sindri during their wager with Loki. He later pulled the chariot of the god Freyr. The boar is said to be able to run through the air and over the sea, day or night. Also, it shines so brightly that wherever it goes, no matter how gloomy the surrounding, the boar will light the way. His body is crafted from adamantine and his eyes from rubies.

Combat

Burst of Light (Sp): 5/day – The bristles on Gullinbursti’s back may call forth a Radiant Burst of light in a 150 ft. radius (as the spell Sunbeam cast at 15th level).

Construct Traits (Ex): Gullinbursti has no Constitution score and is immune to mind-affecting effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, necromancy effects, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, energy drain and nonlethal damage. He is not subject to critical hits, flanking or death from massive damage and is immune to effects requiring a Fortitude save unless they also affect objects.

Immunity to Magic (Ex): Gullinbursti is immune to spells and spell-like abilities that allow spell resistance. An electricity effect slows him for 3 rounds with no saving throw. A fire effect breaks that slow effect and instead repairs 1 hit point for every 3 points of fire damage it would otherwise deal.

Trample (Ex): As a standard action, Gullinbursti can trample Large or smaller creatures for 2d8+25 points of damage. A target that does not make an attack of opportunity against him can attempt a Reflex save (DC 57) for half damage. The save DC is Strength-based.

Charge (Ex): Gullinbursti may charge an opponent, lowering his head to use his mighty tusks. In addition to the normal benefits and hazards of a charge, this allows him to make a single gore attack that deals 4d8+25 points of damage.

Campaign Present

What Is Freyr Doing Now?

Freyr rules from Álfheim with Gerðr, maintaining a realm where elven politics, Vanir custom and the prosperity of the living land are inseparable. Failed seasons, unnatural droughts and disruptions between Midgard and Álfheim are matters of divine security.

His greatest strategic weakness is known to him: the self-fighting sword is gone. Freyr gave it to Skírnir during the wooing of Gerðr and has not undone that gift. He already killed Beli without it, using a hart’s horn, but prophecy names Surtr as the enemy for whom the loss will matter.

Freyr prepares for Ragnarök without pretending the old decision can be cheaply reversed. He strengthens Álfheim’s roads, keeps Skíðblaðnir ready, trains mortal and elven allies, and searches for ways to face Surtr without violating the gift and bargain that brought Gerðr into his life.

Freyr Is Vanir

Some prose lists count Freyr among the Æsir when describing the gods living around Asgard, but his lineage is explicitly Vanir. Njörðr came from the Vanir as part of the settlement between the divine peoples; Freyr and Freyja are his children. Residence among the Æsir does not erase that origin.

Gerðr, Skírnir & the Sword Given Away

Freyr saw Gerðr and fell into consuming longing. He sent Skírnir to woo her. Skírnir demanded Freyr’s horse and the self-fighting sword, and Freyr agreed.

Skírnismál does not present the courtship as a gentle romance. Skírnir offers gifts, then threats, then a magical curse before Gerðr agrees to meet Freyr after nine nights. That coercion remains part of the story rather than being softened away.

Snorri directly links the sword-gift to Freyr’s later vulnerability. Freyr kills Beli with a hart’s horn and could, the prose says, have killed him bare-handed. Surtr is different.

Skíðblaðnir & Gullinbursti

Freyr with Gullinbursti in a 1901 illustration by Johannes Gehrts
Freyr with Gullinbursti, Johannes Gehrts, 1901.

Skíðblaðnir was made by the sons of Ívaldi. It always finds the wind it needs, has room for the divine host with their equipment, and can be folded small enough for a pouch. Loki brought the treasure into the gods’ contest; he did not make the ship.

Gullinbursti was forged by Sindri and Brokkr. The gold-bristled boar runs through air and water better than a horse, and its glowing mane illuminates darkness.

Living Worship

Freyr is invoked for peace, good seasons, rain, sunlight, prosperous households, fertile land and wealth created by a community functioning well. Farmers, rulers, horse-breeders, sailors, merchants and households rebuilding after famine all have reasons to call on him.

Uppsala is especially important to his Swedish traditions. The Ynglinga saga remembers Freyr as Yngvi, a ruler associated with peace, good seasons and the ancestry of the Ynglings; that saga layer informs living kingship rites without being confused with the Eddic divine biography.

Offerings

First fruits, grain, ale, bread, boar imagery, well-bred livestock and a share of profitable trade.

Signs of Favour

Rain arrives when seed needs it, sunlight breaks through at harvest, or a quarrel ends before blood is drawn.

Signs of Warning

Healthy grain forms empty husks, a favourable wind dies around one ship, or an offered blade rusts overnight.

Priestly Duty

Protect land without exhausting it, preserve peace without rewarding predation, and distribute surplus in lean years.

Freyr Is More Than a Fertility or Love God

Fertility matters, but the old prose gives Freyr a broader public role: rain, shining sun, the fruit of the earth, fruitful seasons, peace and human prosperity. Love belongs to his story through Gerðr, but that story also includes bargain, coercion and the loss of the sword that shapes his fate.

Ragnarök — Freyr and Surtr

When Ragnarök comes, Surtr advances from the south with the powers of Muspell. Freyr meets him and falls. The prose explicitly ties that death to the sword Freyr no longer possesses.

Freyr therefore lives with an irreversible bargain rather than searching for a cheap loophole that cancels it.

Adventure Pressure

The Sword Answers

Freyr’s lost sword begins fighting by itself in Midgard. Skírnir does not have it.

Nine Nights Again

Gerðr dreams the same meeting-place for nine nights; on the tenth morning a road from Álfheim to Jötunheim appears.

Skíðblaðnir Will Not Fold

The ship returns and refuses to collapse into its pouch. Something invisible has become a passenger.

The Season Surtr Wants

A perfect summer refuses to end. Crops flourish, then fail because winter never comes; the weather bears traces of Muspell.

Sources & Licensing

Gylfaginning identifies Freyr as Njörðr’s son and Freyja’s brother, ruling rain, shining sun, the fruit of the earth, fruitful seasons, peace and prosperity. It also links the gift of his sword to his weaponlessness against Beli and his future vulnerability when Muspell comes. Skírnismál preserves the sword-and-horse bargain with Skírnir and the coercive wooing of Gerðr. Skáldskaparmál records Skíðblaðnir and Gullinbursti among Freyr’s treasures.
