This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.
Special: A fighter may select Weapon Finesse as one of his fighter bonus feats.
Natural weapons are always considered light weapons.
How Weapon Finesse Works
Weapon Finesse lets a character use Dexterity instead of Strength on attack rolls with eligible weapons. It changes the ability modifier used to hit; it does not automatically replace Strength on damage rolls.
Eligible Weapons
- Light weapons made for a creature of your size category.
- A rapier, whip or spiked chain of the appropriate size.
- Natural weapons, which are treated as light weapons for this feat.
Weapon Finesse Example
A character has Strength 10 and Dexterity 18. With an eligible finesse weapon, Weapon Finesse allows the character to use the +4 Dexterity modifier on the attack roll instead of the +0 Strength modifier. Damage remains governed by the weapon’s normal rules unless another ability says otherwise.
Shield Interaction
If the character carries a shield, the shield’s armor check penalty applies to these attack rolls. See the Feats index for other Dexterity and weapon options.
