Prerequisites: Dexterity 13, Improved Unarmed Strike.
Benefit: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you make a touch attack to start a grapple. You also gain a +4 bonus on all grapple checks, regardless of whether you started the grapple.
Normal: Without this feat, you provoke an attack of opportunity when you make a touch attack to start a grapple.
Special: A fighter may select Improved Grapple as one of his fighter bonus feats.
A monk may select Improved Grapple as a bonus feat at 1st level, even if she does not meet the prerequisites.
How Improved Grapple Works
Improved Grapple removes the attack of opportunity normally provoked by the touch attack used to start a grapple. It also gives a +4 bonus on grapple checks whether you started the grapple or are already involved in one.
Improved Grapple Example
A character reaches for an armed opponent to begin a grapple. With Improved Grapple, the initial touch attack does not provoke an attack of opportunity from that attempt. If the grapple begins, the character adds +4 on the grapple checks that follow.
Prerequisites and Uses
- The normal prerequisites are Dexterity 13 and Improved Unarmed Strike.
- The +4 bonus applies broadly to grapple checks, not only the first check used to start the grapple.
- The feat is especially useful for characters who deliberately control enemies through grappling rather than relying only on weapon attacks.
See the Feats index for other unarmed and combat-control options.
