feat Spring Attack
Spring Attack (General)
This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.
Benefit: When using the attack action with a melee weapon, you can move both before and after the attack, provided that your total distance moved is not greater than your speed. Moving in this way does not provoke an attack of opportunity from the defender you attack, though it might provoke attacks of opportunity from other creatures, if appropriate. You can’t use this feat if you are wearing heavy armor.
You must move at least 5 feet both before and after you make your attack in order to utilize the benefits of Spring Attack.
Special: A fighter may select Spring Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats.
How Spring Attack Works
Spring Attack lets a character split normal movement around one melee attack. You move at least 5 feet before the attack, make the attack, then move at least 5 feet afterward, provided the total distance moved during the turn does not exceed your speed.
Spring Attack Example
A character with a speed of 30 feet moves 10 feet toward an enemy, attacks, then moves another 20 feet away. The attacked defender does not make an attack of opportunity against the character for this movement, although other creatures may still threaten the path and make attacks of opportunity when appropriate.
Important Limits
- The feat is used with the attack action rather than a full attack.
- You must move at least 5 feet before and at least 5 feet after the attack.
- The total movement cannot exceed your speed.
- Spring Attack cannot be used while wearing heavy armor.
Spring Attack is part of the feat chain leading to Whirlwind Attack. See the Feats index for related movement and combat options.
