Animal Growth

Wild animals representing the Animal Growth spell

Animal Growth enlarges several animals at once and turns them into far tougher battlefield creatures. Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e retain the spell directly; its appearance on the Witch list is preserved as legacy archive context rather than modern Witch access.

Animal Growth — Pathfinder 1e

School Transmutation
Level Druid 5, Ranger 4, Sorcerer/Wizard 5
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets Up to one animal per two levels, no two more than 30 ft. apart
Duration 1 minute/level
Saving Throw Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance Yes

Each animal increases by one size category, gains +8 Strength, +4 Constitution, −2 Dexterity, +2 natural armour, damage reduction 10/magic and +4 resistance on saving throws. Space, reach and natural-weapon damage change with size; speed does not.

The spell does not grant command over the animals. Worn and carried equipment enlarges with them, and multiple magical size increases do not stack.

Animal Growth — D&D 3.5e

The 3.5e version uses the same core enlargement package: one size-category increase, +8 Strength, +4 Constitution, −2 Dexterity, improved natural armour, DR 10/magic and +4 resistance on saves for multiple animals.

What Changed?

  • PF1e and 3.5e: Animal Growth remains a multi-target animal buff built around size-category and ability-score changes.
  • 5.5e / 2024 and 2014: there is no direct core spell by this name.
  • Witch archive: the Witch 5 placement is legacy-only.

Using Animal Growth in Play

The spell is strongest when several allied animals are already present. It improves damage, reach and durability at once, but it does not make untrained animals obedient, so control and positioning still matter.

Counterplay and Rulings

  • Fortitude save and spell resistance: apply to unwilling targets.
  • Space: an animal cannot crush itself or another creature simply because there is not enough room to grow.
  • Dispel Magic: can end the ongoing enlargement normally.
  • Size stacking: multiple magical size increases do not stack.
