The gods of the Hellenic world

The Hellenic pantheon is not a single neat family chart. It is a layered sacred world built from Olympian sovereignty, older Titan dynasties, primordial cosmology, local cults, river and sea powers, divine personifications, mystery traditions and heroic worship.

In SpiralWorlds, Mount Olympus in Arborea’s Olympian Glades is the political heart of the Olympian order. Individual powers can still possess distinct sovereign realms, cult centres and cross-planar presences according to their nature and mythology.

The Olympian Court

13 entries

The ruling court of Olympus. Ancient lists of the Twelve vary, particularly over Hestia and Dionysus; SpiralWorlds retains both so the directory reflects the major living traditions rather than pretending there was one immutable ancient roster.

Chthonic Powers & Guardians

8 entries

The powers of descent, the dead, the fertile earth, mystery initiation and the gates below. Not every figure here is a god: Cerberus is a divine guardian, while Triptolemus and Trophonius occupy heroic and cultic roles.

Ancient genealogies differ by author and cult. This group keeps the night-born, fate and death powers together without forcing every figure into a single rigid family tree.

Titans & Elder Powers

19 entries

The elder divine generation and the powers associated with the Titan age. This broader heading deliberately avoids treating every elder sea god or Titan-descended figure as one of the canonical Twelve Titans.

13 entries

The oldest Hellenic cosmic beings and personifications: earth, sky, sea, darkness, day, necessity and time. Chronos (Time) is kept distinct from Cronus, the Titan king.

Mythic Crossroads & Later Campaign Powers

2 entries

These figures occur in SpiralWorlds campaign material but are not classical Hellenic deities and should not be presented as literal children of Nyx. Their presence here is a navigation bridge into later demonological and campaign traditions.

Mythology & campaign canon

Historical and mythological context

Ancient traditions are plural

Greek religion never depended on one universally fixed divine roster. Local cult, period, poet and mystery tradition could change genealogy, title, emphasis and even which gods were counted among the Olympians. SpiralWorlds therefore treats the ancient evidence as a family of traditions rather than forcing every contradiction into one artificial chart.

Major literary foundations include Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days, the Homeric Hymns, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, the Orphic tradition, Pausanias and surviving cult evidence. Individual deity pages can preserve variant traditions where they matter.

SpiralWorlds cosmology

  • Arborea contains the Olympian Glades and Mount Olympus, the principal divine centre of the Hellenic gods.
  • Chronos, primordial Time, is distinct from Cronus/Kronos, the Titan king.
  • Cerberus remains a chthonic guardian rather than being promoted into a deity.
  • Baphomet and Demogorgon are retained as campaign navigation entries, but not as classical children of Nyx.
  • The Abyss governs their Abyssal realm context in the wider campaign.
