Melinoë — Chthonic Goddess of Ghosts and Nightmares

Hellenic chthonic goddess · Ghosts · Nightmares · Restless dead · Apparitions · Propitiation · Moonlit thresholds
Melinoë is the saffron-veiled chthonic power of ghosts, night-roaming apparitions and the terrors that invade mortal sleep. She moves where graves, dreams and the roads of the dead overlap. She is not the Abyssal shadow-demon queen Rhyxali: the two are separate beings with separate origins, servants and powers.

Five-Second Identity
Melinoë is the goddess you invoke when the dead will not lie still, when a nightmare has learned your name, or when a ghost is frightening the living because nobody has understood what it needs. Her presence is terrifying, but terror is not the same thing as evil. She protects the boundary between living memory and restless death as readily as she punishes those who profane it.
Worship in the Living World
In the present age, Melinoë receives quiet offerings at tombs, boundary stones, cave mouths and places where the same disturbing dream returns night after night. Her rites seek three things above all: that the dead receive proper passage, that harmful apparitions be driven away, and that mortals learn when a frightening spirit is asking for justice rather than blood.
Cleric ethos: honour the dead without romanticising them; distinguish ghosts from fiends; protect sleepers from predatory dream-creatures; settle debts that keep spirits bound; do not create restless dead for convenience; and never mistake fear itself for proof of guilt.
What Is Melinoë Doing Now?
Across several old burial roads, sleepers report the same procession: pale figures walking uphill against the direction the dead should travel. Every witness wakes with soil beneath their fingernails and the memory of a closed stone door.
Melinoë is following the procession rather than leading it. Something has taught the dead to leave their appointed roads and enter mortal dreams as a shortcut around the underworld. She wants agents able to cross tomb, dream and ghost-road without attacking every apparition on sight.
- What the characters can notice: graves remain physically sealed, yet footprints lead away from them only in moonlight.
- What Melinoë wants: identify the intelligence opening the false road and return the displaced dead without destroying innocent shades.
- What happens if nobody intervenes: the procession reaches Oneirion and becomes a permanent nightmare-route that predators can follow back into sleeping minds.
Divine Game Mechanics
Encounter role: battlefield controller, fear specialist and spirit-road skirmisher. These are complete encounter manifestations. Defeating one drives Melinoë from the scene; it does not erase a divine power from the cosmos. Each edition is mechanically standalone.

Traits
Divine Rank 8. Melinoë is a lesser deity. Her divine manifestation counts as artifact-level magic for effects concerned with overcoming ordinary mortal wards. Effects that would permanently erase, involuntarily transform, imprison or banish a deity cannot end her divine existence unless they explicitly function against deities or comparable cosmic powers.
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Melinoë fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Melinoë has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Ghost Road. Melinoë can move through creatures and objects as if they were Difficult Terrain. If she ends her turn inside an object, she is moved to the nearest unoccupied space and takes 22 (4d10) Force damage.
Sovereign of Apparitions. A creature that would ignore the Frightened condition solely because of a mortal spell, magic item or ordinary supernatural immunity instead has Advantage on its saving throw against Melinoë’s divine fear. Mindless creatures and beings whose nature makes fear impossible remain immune.
Two-Coloured Revelation. The first time each round Melinoë would take damage while in Dim Light or Darkness, reduce that damage by 15. This reduction does not apply to damage from an artifact, another deity or a source producing bright sunlight.
Expelled, Not Destroyed. At 0 Hit Points the manifestation breaks into alternating pale and black spectral fire. Melinoë is driven from the encounter but remains an immortal divine power.
Divine Spellcasting
Melinoë’s spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 31, +23 to hit with spell attacks). She requires no material components unless an artifact is itself the required focus.
- At will: Detect Magic, Disguise Self, Fear, See Invisibility, Speak with Dead
- 3/day each: Dream, Etherealness, Greater Invisibility, Phantasmal Killer, Plane Shift, True Seeing
- 1/day each: Astral Projection, Gate, Weird
Actions
Multiattack. Melinoë makes three attacks, using Pale Dagger or Moonlit Apparition in any combination.
Pale Dagger. Melee Spell Attack: +23 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 36 (5d8 + 13) Force damage plus 13 (3d8) Necrotic damage. The target cannot take Reactions until the start of Melinoë’s next turn.
Moonlit Apparition. Ranged Spell Attack: +23 to hit, range 180 ft., one target. Hit: 49 (8d8 + 13) Psychic damage. The target must succeed on a DC 31 Wisdom saving throw or have the Frightened condition until the end of its next turn.
Procession of the Unquiet (Recharge 5–6). Spectral dead pour through a 90-foot cone. Each enemy in the area makes a DC 31 Wisdom saving throw, taking 72 (16d8) Psychic damage on a failed save or half as much on a success. On a failed save the creature also has the Frightened condition for 1 minute. It repeats the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the condition on a success. A creature already Frightened by Melinoë also has its Speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn.
Open the Ghost Road (1/Day). Melinoë opens a spectral passage for 1 minute between her space and one grave, tomb, dream-threshold or Ethereal crossing she can perceive within 1 mile. Melinoë and creatures she designates can pass through the opening. This does not create unrestricted travel to any plane or destination.
Bonus Actions
Walk Between Graves. Melinoë teleports up to 90 feet to an unoccupied space she can see. If her starting space or destination is within 10 feet of a grave, a sleeping creature or an incorporeal undead, the range becomes 180 feet.
Reactions
Pale Reflection. When Melinoë is hit by an attack she can see, she imposes Disadvantage on the triggering attack roll. If the attack then misses, she may move up to 30 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Return the Terror. When a creature within 120 feet succeeds on a saving throw against becoming Frightened, Melinoë may deal 18 (4d8) Psychic damage to it. The creature is not forced to repeat the saving throw.
Legendary Actions
Melinoë has 3 Legendary Action uses. Immediately after another creature’s turn, she may expend the listed number of uses. She regains all expended uses at the start of her turn.
- Ghost Step. Melinoë moves up to half her Speed or teleports up to 60 feet.
- Moonlit Apparition. Melinoë makes one Moonlit Apparition attack.
- Waking Nightmare (Costs 2 Uses). One creature Melinoë can see within 90 feet makes a DC 31 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure it takes 27 (6d8) Psychic damage and has the Frightened condition until the end of its next turn.
- The Procession Passes (Costs 3 Uses). Melinoë moves up to her Speed through creatures and objects using Ghost Road. Each enemy whose space she passes through for the first time during this movement makes a DC 31 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) Necrotic damage on a failure or half as much on a success.
Chthonic Sanctum Actions
When Melinoë is encountered in a grave-field, tomb-complex or dream-threshold she has claimed, she may take one sanctum action on initiative count 20, losing ties:
- Cold Moon. A 30-foot-radius sphere within 120 feet fills with supernatural moonlight until the next round. Hostile creatures inside cannot become Invisible and have Disadvantage on checks made to Hide.
- Hands Beneath the Earth. A 40-foot square of ground becomes Difficult Terrain until the next round. A creature that enters it for the first time on a turn or starts there takes 13 (3d8) Necrotic damage.
- Shared Nightmare. One creature Melinoë can see within 120 feet makes a DC 31 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure it is teleported up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space Melinoë can see and has the Frightened condition until the end of its next turn.

Special Abilities
Apparition Fear (Su). A creature hit by Moonlit Apparition must succeed on a DC 39 Will save or become frightened for 1d4 rounds. A creature normally protected from fear by a mortal spell or ordinary supernatural immunity instead gains a +8 circumstance bonus on this save; mindless creatures and beings fundamentally incapable of fear remain immune.
Ghost Road (Su). Melinoë can move through creatures and solid objects as if incorporeal. She must end her movement in an open space. As a swift action she may instead teleport up to 90 feet, or 180 feet if either endpoint is adjacent to a grave, sleeping creature or incorporeal undead.
Nightmare Procession (Su). Once every 1d4 rounds as a standard action, Melinoë fills a 60-foot cone with spectral dead. Enemies make a DC 39 Will save. Failure deals 12d6 nonlethal damage and leaves the target frightened for 1d4 rounds; success halves the damage and leaves the target shaken for 1 round. This is a fear, mind-affecting effect, modified by Apparition Fear.
Two-Coloured Veil (Su). In dim light or darkness Melinoë has 20% concealment. True seeing, artifacts and divine senses ignore this concealment.
Open the Ghost Road (Su) 1/day. Melinoë creates a portal for 1 minute between her space and one grave, tomb, dream-threshold or Ethereal crossing she can perceive within 1 mile.
Expelled, Not Destroyed (Su). At 0 hit points the manifestation disperses into pale and black spectral flame. Melinoë remains an immortal deity.

Melinoë-Specific Divine Powers
Ghost Road (Su). Melinoë may become incorporeal as a free action for the purpose of movement and may cross from a grave, tomb or active dream into a connected chthonic or oneiric threshold. She must end normal movement in an open space.
Nightmare Procession (Su). Once every 1d4 rounds Melinoë projects a 60-foot cone of spectral dead. Mortals and creatures of lower divine rank make a DC 31 Will save. Failure causes panic for 3d6 rounds and 12d6 points of nonlethal damage; success negates the panic and halves the damage. A creature immune to ordinary mortal fear gains a +8 divine bonus on the save instead of automatic immunity unless fear is fundamentally impossible for that creature.
Two-Coloured Manifestation (Su). Melinoë may appear clearly, darkly or as both at once. In shadow she may use Hide even while observed and gains concealment; true seeing and divine senses perceive her normally.
Expelled, Not Destroyed (Su). This encounter manifestation can be defeated. Melinoë’s divine existence persists unless the conditions for destroying a deity are met.
Running Melinoë at the Table
Melinoë is not built as a stationary damage brute. She wins space. She appears through walls, splits the party’s sight-lines, turns fear into lost movement and forces characters to decide whether the ghost in front of them is an enemy, a witness or a victim.
Opening round: use Procession of the Unquiet or Nightmare Procession to establish the battlefield, then reposition through Ghost Road.
Middle rounds: isolate dangerous attackers with fear and teleportation while keeping a route toward graves, sleeping creatures or incorporeal allies.
If violence starts: Melinoë does not normally fight to exterminate mortals. She tests, frightens, marks and expels. Characters who protect helpless dead, return stolen remains or expose a false exorcist can turn a combat encounter into negotiation.
Domains and Divine Magic
Melinoë’s portfolio overlaps several rules traditions, so the mechanical implementation stays edition-specific instead of pretending every domain name exists unchanged in every game.
Ghost & Nightmare Divine Package
This is a Melinoë-specific divine spell package rather than a claim that Ghost or Nightmare is a standard 2024 Player’s Handbook Cleric subclass.
| Cleric Level | Always Prepared |
|---|---|
| 3rd | False Life, Gentle Repose, See Invisibility, Phantasmal Force |
| 5th | Fear, Speak with Dead |
| 7th | Death Ward, Phantasmal Killer |
| 9th | Dream, Greater Restoration |
For campaigns using legacy 5e divine subclasses, Grave and Twilight are natural compatibility choices, while Trickery supports Melinoë’s deceptive apparitions and shifting forms.
Pathfinder 1e Domains
Primary domains: Death, Darkness, Madness and Repose. Recommended subdomains: Night, Souls, Fear and Ancestors where available. A cleric normally selects from the legal domains offered by the campaign rather than receiving every portfolio aspect at once.
D&D 3.5e Domains
Mechanical domains: Death, Repose and Trickery. Madness remains part of Melinoë’s portfolio and can be added when the campaign uses a compatible published or house domain. Under the divine-rank rules, Melinoë can use the domain spells she grants as spell-like abilities at will.
Divine Boons
Blessing of the Quiet Grave
Once per Long Rest, when you fail a saving throw against the Frightened condition or an effect created by an incorporeal undead, you may reroll the saving throw. You must use the new result.
Ghost-Road Step
Once per Long Rest, as a Bonus Action, you become spectral until the end of your turn. During that movement you may pass through creatures and nonmagical objects as Difficult Terrain, but you must end your turn in an unoccupied space or be moved to the nearest one and take Force damage equal to twice your character level.
Dream of the Unburied
After you finish a Long Rest in a place troubled by restless dead, the Game Master may give you one symbolic image revealing what most urgently binds one nearby spirit: a person, place, object, oath or unresolved act. The vision does not identify guilt automatically and cannot replace investigation.
Divine Relic — The Pale Torch
The Pale Torch is a black-wood torch whose silver-white flame gives no heat. It is carried in rites that guide the dead, expose false apparitions and open controlled passages between grave and dream.
- The bearer can see Invisible and Ethereal undead within 120 feet.
- The bearer has Advantage on saving throws against the Frightened condition.
- The torch has 7 charges, regaining 1d6+1 at moonrise. It may expend 1 charge to cast Speak with Dead, 2 to cast See Invisibility, or 3 to cast Etherealness on the bearer only.
- Once every seven nights, the torch can open a one-minute safe threshold into a dream connected to one willing dead spirit or one sleeping creature known to the bearer. The passage cannot be used to seize an unwilling soul.
Melinoë in Orphic Tradition
The surviving Orphic hymn calls Melinoë saffron-veiled and chthonic, born beside the mournful river Cocytus. It describes her body as partly dark and partly pale and presents her as a night-roaming source of frightening spectral appearances. The prayer does not ask her to spread terror; it asks her to drive the soul’s maddening fears away and bless the initiates.
The genealogy is deliberately unusual. Persephone is named as Melinoë’s mother, while Zeus fathers her after approaching Persephone in the form of Plouton. That mixed celestial and chthonic parentage explains the hymn’s black-and-white imagery.
Ancient interpretation is not perfectly tidy. Melinoë overlaps strongly with Hecate as a nocturnal leader of ghosts, and some classical-reference traditions read Melinoë as an Orphic form or title of Hecate. Here, Hecate and Melinoë remain distinct divine persons whose portfolios touch without becoming identical.
Relationships
Persephone: mother, underworld queen and the strongest line of Melinoë’s chthonic legitimacy. Melinoë carries authority into places where grief, burial and restless memory intersect.
Hades: sovereign of underworld law. Melinoë deals most often with the exceptions: spirits that have left their road, burials that were violated and ghosts refusing proper passage.
Hecate: a close but distinct neighbour in divine function. Hecate governs crossroads, torches, witchcraft and liminal passage; Melinoë is narrower and more spectral, centring ghosts, apparitions and nightmare-terror.
Hypnos: controls the threshold of sleep. Melinoë does not own sleep itself; she becomes dangerous when fear, ghosts or underworld pressure invade what sleeping minds encounter.
Morpheus: shapes convincing dream-form. His crafted dream imagery and Melinoë’s frightening apparitions can resemble one another, but their authority and purpose differ.
Thanatos: peaceful death is not the same thing as restless haunting. Melinoë often enters the story where the normal transition Thanatos represents has been interrupted.
Nyx: primordial Night stands above a much wider darkness than Melinoë’s specialist chthonic office. Their powers meet in night, fear and dream without sharing the same genealogy or sovereignty.
Adventure Hooks
- The Wrong Procession: ghosts begin walking out of a necropolis instead of into it.
- The Shared Nightmare: unrelated sleepers all dream of the same sealed doorway and wake with the same grave-soil under their nails.
- The Stolen Shade: a noble’s ghost vanishes before burial, leaving the body intact but every mirror in the house showing a funeral procession.
- Moon Over the Tombs: a full moon causes the dead to speak in living voices and accuse someone who has been dead for a century.
- The False Exorcist: a celebrated spirit-hunter is actually driving harmless ghosts into Oneirion, where something feeds on them.
- Two-Coloured Child: a living child begins appearing half-pale and half-shadowed in other people’s dreams, carrying a message Melinoë refuses to explain directly.

Sources and Licensing
Primary ancient evidence centres on the Orphic Hymn to Melinoë, preserved among the Orphic Hymns. The hymn supplies the saffron veil, Persephone-and-Zeus genealogy, Cocytus setting, black-and-white body and frightening nocturnal apparitions. Wider underworld context comes from Greek literary traditions concerning Persephone, Hades, ghosts and chthonic rites.
