Chaos — Primordial Gap Before the Ordered Cosmos

Chaos — Primordial Gap Before the Ordered Cosmos

Chaos, the Hellenic primordial gap before the ordered cosmos
Chaos is not simple destruction: it is the first yawning gap from which ordered relations have not yet emerged.

Hellenic primordial · First gap · Unformed separation · Cosmic origin · Before ordered creation

Chaos is the primordial gap at the beginning of Hesiod’s cosmos: the first yawning separation before the familiar generations of gods, earth, sky and underworld take their places. It is not merely a synonym for random destruction.

Divine Mechanics

Encounter role: Reality-warping primordial / battlefield geometry. These are original campaign statistics for compatibility; each edition tab is standalone.

Chaos, Greater Primordial — Gargantuan Celestial, Neutral; suggested CR 36.

Armor Class 28 Hit Points 780
Speed 60 ft., fly 160 ft. (hover) Proficiency Bonus +10
STR 30 (+10) DEX 24 (+7)
CON 30 (+10) INT 30 (+10)
WIS 30 (+10) CHA 28 (+9)

Saving Throws Con +20, Int +20, Wis +20, Cha +19. Damage Resistances all damage from spells of 5th level or lower. Damage Immunities force, psychic. Condition Immunities charmed, frightened, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, prone, restrained. Senses truesight 500 ft.

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Chaos fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

No Fixed Shape. Chaos can occupy another creature’s space, move through objects and planar boundaries as difficult terrain, and cannot be transformed against its will.

Unmeasured Distance. Within 180 feet of Chaos, ranges are unstable. Whenever a hostile creature targets something more than 30 feet away, roll a d6; on a 1, the target is out of range and the action is not expended.

Open the Gap (Recharge 5–6). Chaos tears a 90-foot-radius breach at a point within 300 feet. Creatures there make a DC 28 Dexterity saving throw, taking 78 (12d12) force damage and being teleported to a random unoccupied point within the area on a failure, or half damage with no teleport on a success.

Mythic Trait — Before There Was Order. The first time Chaos reaches 0 hit points, it instead regains 390 hit points. For 1 minute, initiative ties, teleportation destinations and summoned-creature arrival points are chosen by Chaos.

Greater Primordial; alignment N. Suggested divine encounter CR 35. Domains: Chaos, Darkness, Knowledge, Trickery. Subdomains: Entropy, Night, Memory, Deception. Favoured weapon: unarmed strike.

Gap Between Things (Su). Chaos treats all spaces within 120 feet as adjacent for its own movement and line of effect.

Unmake Distance (Su). Once per day it may affect a 1-mile radius as though by mage’s disjunction only against teleportation circles, gates and extradimensional spaces.

Greater Primordial; Divine Rank 18; alignment N. Portfolio: primordial separation, unformed possibility, cosmic gaps and pre-order. Domains: Chaos, Darkness, Knowledge. Favoured weapon: unarmed strike.

Appropriate salient divine abilities include Alter Reality, Divine Creation, Divine Fast Healing, Extra Sense Enhancement and Travel.

First Gap. Within its divine aura, Chaos may alter distance between two points by a factor of ten for movement, perception and ranged effects.

The First Gap

Hesiod opens the Theogony with Chaos coming first. The Greek term is better understood as a gap, chasm or yawning opening than as the modern idea of noisy disorder.

Gaia, Tartarus and Eros soon establish earth, depth and generative relation. The campaign therefore treats Chaos as pre-order and separation rather than as an evil god trying to destroy creation.

Worship in the Living World

Chaos has few conventional temples. Philosophers, primordial cults, explorers of planar rifts and people who live beside bottomless chasms leave offerings at places where ordinary distance or orientation fails.

Beyond the Ordered Planes

Chaos predates the familiar political geography of the planes. It can touch Arborea, Tartarus, the elemental realms and mortal space through rifts where the normal relationships between place, direction and boundary have begun to fail.

What Is Chaos Doing Now?

Small gaps are appearing in old roads: a single missing paving stone opens onto a night sky, a well has no bottom but echoes with birdsong, and two doors in different cities have begun opening into the same room.

Chaos is not invading. The boundaries holding several ancient realms apart are thinning, and the primordial gap is simply becoming visible where ordered creation no longer fits tightly together.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

1st: silent image, unseen servant · 2nd: misty step, rope trick · 3rd: blink, nondetection · 4th: dimension door, confusion · 5th: passwall, teleportation circle · 6th: disintegrate, scatter · 7th: etherealness, plane shift · 8th: demiplane, maze · 9th: gate, time stop.

Divine Relic — The Unmeasured Stone

An original game relic that appears to have no consistent size. Once per long rest the bearer can treat two points within 120 feet as adjacent for one move. Once per week the stone opens a temporary passage to a location the bearer can see but not normally reach.

  • The Shared Room: doors in three kingdoms begin opening into the same chamber.
  • The Horizon Falls: travellers can touch a mountain that remains fifty miles away.
  • The First Sound: an echo begins speaking before anyone makes the noise it answers.

Relationships

Hesiod’s Theogony provides the central ancient description of Chaos as the first cosmic gap. The page deliberately avoids equating that Greek primordial with the modern everyday meaning of chaos.

Mythological material is paraphrased from ancient literary traditions. Encounter statistics, relics, spell selections and adventure material are original fantasy-RPG adaptations. Edition names identify rules compatibility.
