Clotho spins, Lachesis measures and Atropos brings the allotted thread to its end.

Hellenic fate goddesses · Clotho · Lachesis · Atropos · Allotment · Lifespan · Destiny

The Moirai are the three great goddesses of fate: Clotho, who spins the thread of life; Lachesis, who allots and measures it; and Atropos, who brings it to its unavoidable end. They are Hellenic powers in their own right, not the Norse Norns.

Divine Mechanics

Encounter role: Mythic controller / fate manipulation. These are original campaign statistics for compatibility; each edition tab is standalone.

The Moirai, Intermediate Deities — Medium Celestial, Lawful Neutral; suggested CR 32.

Armor Class 27 Hit Points 660
Speed 40 ft., fly 80 ft. (hover) Proficiency Bonus +9
STR 18 (+4) DEX 20 (+5)
CON 28 (+9) INT 30 (+10)
WIS 30 (+10) CHA 28 (+9)

Saving Throws Int +19, Wis +19, Cha +18. Damage Resistances psychic, radiant. Damage Immunities necrotic. Condition Immunities charmed, frightened, stunned. Senses truesight 300 ft., passive Perception 29.

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If the Moirai fails a saving throw, they can choose to succeed instead.

Three Who Allot. The Moirai act on three initiative counts but share one pool of hit points. Effects that would banish, imprison or transform one sister fail unless they affect all three.

Measured Outcome. Three times per round, after a creature within 120 feet rolls a d20 but before the result is declared, the Moirai can replace the roll with 7, 13 or 19. Each number can be used only once per round.

Cut the Thread (Recharge 6). One creature within 120 feet must make a DC 27 Constitution saving throw, taking 88 (16d10) necrotic damage on a failure or half on a success. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage cannot be restored to life until the next dawn unless the Moirai permit it.

Mythic Trait — The Pattern Continues. The first time the Moirai reach 0 hit points, they instead regain 330 hit points and rewind the battlefield to the beginning of the previous round for positioning only; hit points, spell slots and expended features remain as they are.

Intermediate Deities; alignment LN. Suggested divine encounter CR 31. Domains: Knowledge, Law, Fate, Repose. Subdomains: Memory, Inevitable, Souls, Judgment. Favoured weapon: shears.

Allotted Result (Su). Three times per round the Moirai may force a creature within 120 feet to reroll a d20 and take the second result.

Sever Fate (Su). Once per day one creature that fails a Fortitude save is affected as by destruction. A creature slain this way cannot be returned to life for 24 hours without divine intervention.

Intermediate Deities; Divine Rank 12; alignment LN. Portfolio: fate, allotment, lifespan, destiny and inevitable endings. Domains: Fate, Knowledge, Law, Repose. Favoured weapon: shears.

Appropriate salient divine abilities include Alter Reality, Divine Oracle, Know Death, See Magic and Supreme Initiative.

Threefold Fate. The sisters share one divine rank for effects that compare divine power, but each may take one divine action per round.

Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos

Greek sources present the Moirai as powers who assign mortal portions and lifespans. Their parentage varies across traditions, which is appropriate for beings whose authority seems older than any single divine family tree.

The familiar division of labour — spinning, measuring and cutting the thread — makes the trio immediately useful at the table without collapsing them into the Norns, who belong to a different northern tradition.

Worship in the Living World

Midwives, judges, mourners, rulers and people facing irrevocable choices leave offerings of thread, wool or measured cord. Petitioners do not normally ask the Moirai to abolish fate; they ask to understand their portion or meet it with dignity.

Pantheon Plane: The Olympian Glades

The Moirai are received in the Olympian order but are never merely courtiers. Even Zeus treats fate with caution. Their halls touch the deeper structures of necessity represented by Ananke and the ordered fabric beneath the visible planes.

What Is The Moirai Doing Now?

Threads tied to newborn children are appearing already knotted with events that have not happened yet: marriages, betrayals, crowns and deaths described in impossible detail.

The Moirai insist the knots are not theirs. Someone has begun writing fate in advance, turning possibility into counterfeit inevitability.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

1st: bless, command · 2nd: augury, gentle repose · 3rd: bestow curse, clairvoyance · 4th: divination, death ward · 5th: commune, geas · 6th: true seeing, forbiddance · 7th: divine word, plane shift · 8th: maze, mind blank · 9th: foresight, time stop.

Divine Relic — The Threefold Thread

An original game relic: a length of white, red and black thread that cannot be cut by mundane means. Once per long rest the bearer may reroll one failed d20 test. Once per week the thread can cast divination without material components.

Use The Moirai Tonight

  • Counterfeit Fate: written prophecies begin becoming true simply because they were written.
  • The Uncut Thread: a dead ruler’s thread still stretches across the city.
  • The Fourth Spinner: a new cult claims there is a hidden fourth Fate.
  • The Measured Child: three strangers arrive at a birth and each names a different destiny.

Relationships

Ananke: necessity stands behind the Moirai as the deeper principle that even divine choices cannot simply ignore.

Themis: divine order and fate often overlap, especially in traditions that make the Moirai her daughters.

Zeus: king of the gods, but not a casual master of destiny.

Nyx: in Hesiodic genealogy, Night is the mother of the Fates.

Sources and Licensing

Hesiod’s Theogony and later Greek tradition preserve variant genealogies for the Moirai. The three names Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos and their association with allotted lifespan are treated here as Hellenic material distinct from the Norse Norns.

Mythological material is paraphrased from ancient literary traditions. Encounter statistics, relics, spell selections and adventure material are original fantasy-RPG adaptations. Edition names identify rules compatibility.
