Tartarus — Primordial Abyss and Prison Below the Underworld

Hellenic primordial · Abyss · Cosmic prison · Titans · Depth · Boundary beneath Hades
Tartarus is both a primordial cosmic power and the terrible depth that bears its name. Hesiod places it among the earliest realities and describes the abyss as unimaginably far beneath the earth.

The Deepest Place
Hesiod presents Tartarus both as a primordial entity and as the immense abyss beneath the earth. The Titans are cast into this depth after their defeat, and later myths continue to use Tartarus as a place of extraordinary imprisonment.
Tartarus is deeper than Hades in cosmological terms and should not be treated as simply another name for the ordinary land of the dead. Its defining function is cosmic containment.
Worship in the Living World
Tartarus is feared and invoked more often than loved. Jailers, oath-keepers and secret societies may use its name in binding rites, while prisoners and rebels pray never to be sent where no road returns.
Tartarus and the Tarterian Depths
The primordial Tartarus is the mythic source behind the campaign’s Tarterian depths and prison-realms. Its relationship to Carceri is one of deep cosmological correspondence rather than a claim that every ancient Greek description maps neatly onto one later planar taxonomy.
What Is Tartarus Doing Now?
Prisons across several kingdoms have begun developing impossible lower levels. Staircases continue below their foundations into older stone, and wardens hear chains moving where no cells were built.
Tartarus is closing gaps in an ancient prison network. The danger is that mortals have unknowingly built dungeons on top of seals that were never meant to be reopened.
Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

An original game relic that can lock any mundane door without a visible mechanism. Once per long rest it can cast arcane lock without components. Once per week it can create a forcecage, but the cage cannot be dismissed early by the bearer.
