Also known as chevaliers, romantics, gentlemen, and love’s champions, the gallants follow a code of love, romance, and heroics. They wander the lands in pursuit of love and destroying evil in love’s name. Most gallants are bards and paladins who have fallen in love with love.

Game Rule Information

Gallants have the following game statistics.
Hit Die: d8.
Class Skills: The gallant’s class skills are Appraise (Intelligence), Bluff (Charisma), Concentration (Constitution), Craft (Intelligence), Diplomacy (Charisma), Gather Information (Charisma), Handle Animal (Charisma), Heal (Wisdom), Knowledge (local) (Intelligence), Listen (Wisdom), Perform (Charisma), Profession (Wisdom), Ride (Dexterity), Sense Motive (Wisdom), Sleight of Hand (Dexterity), Spellcraft (Intelligence), and Spot (Wisdom).

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Intelligence modifier.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the gallant prestige class.

Weapons and Armor Proficiency: Gallants gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Charming: Romanticism is infectious. A number of times per day equal to his gallant level, he can effect charm person (DC 10 + gallant level + Charisma modifier) against a female target as the spell cast by a bard of his caster level. The gallant cannot be Charming if disguised or obscured, and can only affect females normally subject to the charm person spell. This is a Language-Dependant spell-like ability.

The gallant can enhance Charming with the Charm a Crowd, Cupid’s Brew, Descriptor Focus, Extra Gallant Ability, Greater Charming, and Subschool Focus feats.

Gallant’s Code: He must be of a good alignment. In addition, he follows a philosophy of romance, love, and chivalry known as the Gallant’s Code. He vows to never marry or devote his love to only one person, to never overstay his welcome, to never use shields or wear helmets, and to help lovers, the innocent, and the fairer sex (see below) who need his help, provided they do not use the help for evil ends. In addition, the gallant’s reverence for beauty and love imposes a number of penalties and bonuses when dealing with the fairer sex:

The Fairer Sex: These bonuses and penalties apply only against female Humanoids and monstrous humanoids and against female Fey, Giants, and outsiders that have a distinctly female humanoid anatomy, such as nymphs, sylphs, and succubi. All class features that affect -the fairer sex- affect only these creatures

He is loathe to harm the fairer sex. Except when dealing nonlethal damage, the gallant suffers a penalty to all melee attack rolls against the fairer sex equal to one-half the target creature’s Charisma modifier (if positive), rounded down. A gallant attacking a dryad or nymph, for example, suffers a -2 penalty to his attack rolls that deal lethal damage.

The gallant suffers a particular weakness for the most beautiful of the fairer sex. He incurs a penalty to Will saves against Enchantments originating from the fairer sex equal to half of the creature’s Charisma modifier (if positive), rounded down. If the gallant succeeds at a Will save against such an attack, he ignores this penalty against that specific creature for the remainder of the encounter.

He would rather subdue than slay the fairer sex. When dealing nonlethal damage to the fairer sex, he deals an extra 1d6 points of damage +1d6 points for every three levels of gallant (2d6 at 3rd level, 3d6 at 6th level, etc.). When making nonlethal attacks against these creatures with weapons that normally deal only lethal damage, he ignores the normal -4 penalty to his attack roll.

He knows the female heart intimately. Against the fairer sex, he receives a bonus to the DC of all of his Enchantment spells and effects and to all Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Perform, and Sense Motive checks equal to half his levels in gallant, rounded down. If the target successfully makes an opposing check or applicable save against such an attack or attempt, the gallant loses this bonus against that specific creature for the remainder of the encounter. Attempting to so woo a member of the fairer sex in front of her lover or husband often leads to jealous anger from that partner.

These bonuses do not stack with other bonuses or penalties based on gender.

The gallant casts divine spells without preparation as a bard casts arcane spells, based on his Charisma score and using the spell list and spell progression below. Like the paladin, the gallant does not need to worship a deity to cast his spells; he draws on the power of love for his magic:

Spell Notes: When casting any spell with a Divine Focus, Abstinence component, or Dragon Magic component, the gallant can use the symbol of the Gallant’s Code: a silver heart (25gp). Spells simply renamed, such as dashing and wall of roses, operate identically to the root spell noted (eagle’s splendor and wall of thorns, in these cases).

A Rose for the Lady [2nd level]: The gallant is rarely without a rose for a lovely lady. Once per day per point of his Charisma bonus, he can conjure a single red rose as a spell-like ability. When presented to a member of the fairer sex in a non-hostile situation, the rose doubles the gallant’s normal Gallant’s Code bonus to Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather Information, and Perform checks targeting the recipient for 1d4 rounds unless she succeeds at a Will save (DC 10 + gallant level + Charisma modifier). This is a spell-like ability.

The gallant can enhance A Rose for the Lady with the Extra Gallant Ability feat.

Style [2nd/4th/8th/10th level]: A romantic man of the world, a wanderer and artist, a leader and lover. At the indicated levels, he chooses a bonus feat from the following list: Alluring, Animal Affinity, Artist, Attractive, Born in the Saddle, Cosmopolitan, Empathic, Feinting Expertise, Good Manners, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Leadership, Luck of Heroes, Multicultural, Negotiator, Persuasive, Silver Palm, Sly, Smooth Talk, Sophisticated, Street Smart, Tamer of Beasts, Trustworthy, Weathered Traveler, Warmhearted, or Wily.

The gallant must otherwise qualify for any feat chosen.

Love of Life [3rd level]: The gallant’s love of life grants him the favor of fate and a supernatural ability to escape certain death. Once per day for every three levels of gallant, he may reroll any failed saving throw that would have resulted in his death or force any opponent to reroll any attack roll that would deal damage resulting in the gallant’s death. He can only force one reroll of a single save or attack.

This is a supernatural ability and a free action.

The gallant can enhance Love of Life with the Extra Greater Gallant Ability feat.

Beauty’s Champion [4th level]: When defending beauty and love, he is undeterred. When fighting in defense of the fairer sex, lovers, the weak, or creatures or locales of great natural beauty, he is immune to fear and remains conscious even when reduced below 0 hit points. The gallant can so maintain consciousness for no longer than 10 minutes and only until reaching –10 hit points.

Romeo [5th level]: His magnetism and personal charm can influence even female displacer beasts and dragons. Three times per day, his Charming ability can manifest as charm monster, allowing him to affect all creatures of the fairer sex.

The gallant can enhance Romeo with the Charm a Crowd, Descriptor Focus, Extra Greater Gallant Ability, and Subschool Focus feats.

White Stallion [6th level]: He gains the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal white stallion to serve him in his pursuit and protection of love. This mount is usually a heavy warhorse (for a Medium gallant) or a warpony (for a Small gallant). Once per day as a full-round action, the gallant may magically call his mount from the celestial realms in which it resides. The mount immediately appears adjacent to him and remains for 2 hours per gallant level; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action. The mount is the same creature each time it is summoned, though the gallant may release a particular mount from service. Each time the mount is called, it appears in full health, regardless of any damage it may have taken previously. The mount also appears wearing or carrying any gear it had when it was last dismissed. Calling a mount is a Conjuration (Calling) effect, and any paladin levels stack with gallant levels for determining the special abilities of the mount.

Should the his mount die, it immediately disappears, leaving behind any equipment it was carrying. The gallant may not summon another mount for 30 days or until he gains a gallant level, whichever comes first, even if the mount is somehow returned from the dead. During this 30-day period, the gallant takes a -1 penalty on attack and weapon damage rolls.

Love’s Avatar [7th level]: Fate or the Powers That Be smile upon him. The gallant adds his Charisma modifier (if positive) to all saving throws. If he already enjoys Divine Grace or some other save bonus from Charisma, he receives a +1 bonus to all saves.

Alas, I Die [9th level]: He can recite a tragic poem at the moment of his death. When reduced to between -10 and -30 hit points with a single blow or attack, the gallant regains consciousness for 1 round to recite a dying poem. The poem has two effects: All allies within 30 feet of the gallant are rallied by their grief at his untimely death and enjoy a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls and saving throws for a number of minutes equal to twice the gallant’s level. Secondly, the gallant can target one creature within 30 feet with his poem, often the creature responsible for his death, and inflict bestow curse on that creature unless it succeeds at a Will save (DC 10 + gallant’s character level + Charisma modifier). After reciting the poem, the gallant dies.

The Heart Knows [9th level]: He can be a gentlemen in even the most dire of circumstances. The gallant can Take 10 on Diplomacy and Sense Motive checks under any circumstances and can make rushed Diplomacy checks without incurring the normal -10 penalty.

Love’s Return [10th level]: The grief over love lost can compel death to release its hold upon a creature. A number of times in his lifetime equal to his Charisma modifier, the gallant can cast true resurrection upon a companion, loved one, or relation. He can so resurrect an individual creature only once, and doing so drains him of 1 Wisdom point for one year. This spell-like ability requires the gallant to grieve for 1 full day.

Epic Gallant: The epic-level gallant continues his Hit Die, skill point, Charming, and Love of Life progression. In addition, he receives bonus epic feats at 13th level and every three levels thereafter (13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd, etc).

Ex-Gallants: The gallant who turns away from his Good alignment or flagrantly violates the Gallant’s Code loses access to all class features, including spellcasting ability and the service of his White Stallion. He regains his abilities if he atones for his violations as appropriate.
