Atlas — Titan of Endurance, Bearer of the Heavens

The Titan condemned to uphold the celestial heavens at the western verge of the mortal world.

Atlas is the mighty son of Iapetus and Clymene, brother of Menoetius, Prometheus and Epimetheus. After the Titanomachy, Zeus condemned him to stand at the western limit of the Material Plane and bear the heavens. Atlas embodies endurance, impossible strength, celestial order, astronomy, burdens and the terrible permanence of an obligation that cannot simply be abandoned.

Game Statistics

Atlas as a Divine Encounter

These statistics represent a combat-capable manifestation of Atlas or a temporary release during which cosmic law continues to sustain his Heaven-Bearing Station. They do not reduce the entire cosmic Titan to a finite pool of hit points.

Defeating Atlas is not killing Atlas

Reducing a manifestation to 0 hit points defeats or disperses that manifestation. Permanently destroying the true Heaven-Bearer is a campaign-scale act that must also answer: what carries the heavens afterward?

Challenge 37 — SpiralWorlds epic divine manifestation

Epic scale: CR 37 extends beyond the normal published 5e/2024 monster range. The +11 proficiency bonus continues the normal progression for SpiralWorlds epic play.

Traits

Divine Manifestation. Reducing this form to 0 hit points does not destroy the true Atlas.
Heaven-Bearer’s Stance. Atlas cannot be knocked Prone or moved against his will. Forced teleportation, banishment or similar displacement fails unless Atlas permits it or the effect originates from a deity, artifact or comparable cosmic power.
Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Atlas fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Atlas has Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.
Divine Natural Weapons. Atlas’s natural attacks are magical and divine for the purpose of overcoming resistance or immunity.
Unbounded Strength. Atlas automatically succeeds on noncombat Strength checks made to lift, support, push, pull, bend or break ordinary physical matter unless the task is itself a cosmic contest against comparable power. His carrying capacity is determined by the scale of the scene rather than the normal carrying-capacity table. He can grapple creatures of any size.
Endurance Without End. At the start of each of Atlas’s turns, he regains 40 hit points if he has at least 1 hit point.

Divine Magic

Wisdom is Atlas’s spellcasting ability (spell save DC 29, +21 to hit). He requires no material components.

Actions

Multiattack. Atlas makes four Titanic Slam attacks. He may replace one attack with Seize the Unmovable.
Titanic Slam. Melee Attack Roll: +27, reach 25 ft., one target. Hit: 55 (6d12 + 16) Bludgeoning damage plus 19 (3d12) Force damage. A Huge or smaller target may also be pushed up to 30 feet.
Mountain Hurl. Ranged Attack Roll: +27, range 300/1,200 ft., one target. Hit: 68 (8d12 + 16) Bludgeoning damage plus 26 (4d12) Thunder damage. Each other creature within 15 feet of the impact point must succeed on a DC 29 Dexterity saving throw or take 26 (4d12) Bludgeoning damage.
Seize the Unmovable. One creature within 25 feet must succeed on a DC 29 Strength or Dexterity saving throw or become Grappled and Restrained. The target’s size grants no immunity. The target repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, ending both conditions on a success. While restrained, it takes 55 (6d12 + 16) Bludgeoning damage at the start of each of Atlas’s turns.
Weight of Heaven (Recharge 5–6). Every creature in a 60-foot-radius sphere centred on a point within 240 feet must make a DC 29 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 78 (12d12) Bludgeoning damage plus 78 (12d12) Force damage, falls Prone and becomes Restrained until the end of its next turn. On a success it takes half damage and suffers no additional effect. Structures and unattended objects take double damage.

Reaction

Hold Fast. When Atlas would be moved, knocked Prone, physically restrained or carried through a portal against his will, he negates that effect. If a creature within his reach caused it, Atlas may immediately make one Titanic Slam against that creature.

Legendary Actions

Atlas can take 4 Legendary Actions, one at a time at the end of another creature’s turn. He regains all spent Legendary Actions at the start of his turn.

Titanic Step. Atlas moves up to half his Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Slam. Atlas makes one Titanic Slam attack.
Crush the Captive — 2 Actions. A creature grappled by Atlas takes 55 (6d12 + 16) Bludgeoning damage.
Break the Ground — 2 Actions. Each creature of Atlas’s choice within 30 feet must make a DC 29 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure it takes 39 (6d12) Bludgeoning damage and falls Prone. On a success it takes half damage.

Heaven-Bearing Station Actions

When Atlas is encountered at the true Heaven-Bearing Station or at a manifestation explicitly anchored to it, the environment itself acts on initiative count 20, losing initiative ties. Atlas cannot use the same Station action two rounds in succession.

Celestial Pressure. Atlas chooses a point on the ground within 240 feet. Each creature in a 30-foot-radius cylinder 100 feet high must succeed on a DC 29 Strength saving throw or take 39 (6d12) Force damage, fall Prone and have its Speed reduced to 0 until initiative count 20 of the next round. On a success, the creature takes half damage and suffers no additional effect.
Earth Answers the Bearer. Stone erupts from the ground at up to three points Atlas can see within 180 feet. Each eruption fills a 15-foot cube. A creature in a cube must make a DC 29 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it takes 33 (6d10) Bludgeoning damage and becomes Restrained by stone. On a success, it takes half damage and is pushed to the nearest unoccupied space. A restrained creature can use an action to make a DC 29 Strength (Athletics) check, escaping on a success.
The Ground Will Not Yield. Until initiative count 20 of the next round, the ground within 120 feet of Atlas becomes supernaturally fixed. Creatures other than Atlas cannot be forcibly moved while touching the ground, and teleportation that begins and ends within the affected area fails unless the creature succeeds on a DC 29 Charisma saving throw.
Tremor of Othrys Remembered. A violent tremor passes through a 90-foot-radius area centred on a point Atlas can see within 240 feet. Each creature standing on the ground there must make a DC 29 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it takes 32 (5d12) Bludgeoning damage and falls Prone. Structures in the area take 65 (10d12) Bludgeoning damage.

Optional Mythic Phase

The Burden Endures — 1/Day

When the manifestation would be reduced to 0 hit points, it instead remains at 1 hit point, ends every condition affecting it and regains 637 hit points. A spectral celestial sphere becomes visible above Atlas. Every other creature within 120 feet must succeed on a DC 29 Strength saving throw or take 52 (8d12) Force damage and fall Prone. Using this trait turns the encounter into a two-phase mythic battle beyond the base CR 37 benchmark.

Regional Effects

The region surrounding a major manifestation of Atlas reflects the presence of the Heaven-Bearer. Unless otherwise stated, these effects extend for approximately 6 miles around the manifestation. At the true Western Verge they are not temporary magical phenomena but part of the local cosmic order.

The Weight of the World. Unattended objects weigh twice as much as normal. A creature’s normal carrying, lifting, pushing and dragging capacity is halved unless Atlas favours that creature. Carelessly constructed buildings develop cracks and settling faults, while sound arches, foundations and load-bearing structures become exceptionally difficult to collapse.
Unyielding Earth. Natural stone becomes supernaturally resistant to alteration. Ordinary excavation through rock takes twice as long. When a spell or magical effect attempts to reshape more than a 10-foot cube of natural stone, its caster must succeed on a DC 20 spellcasting ability check or the attempted alteration fails. Atlas can suppress this effect in any area he can perceive.
The Western Sky. At night, important stars remain visible through ordinary cloud, mist and haze. A creature proficient with navigator’s tools or possessing relevant astronomical knowledge has Advantage on checks made to determine direction or position from the heavens. Illusions that deliberately falsify the positions of major stars appear subtly wrong to any creature familiar with the night sky.
Burden Revealed. A creature that knowingly abandons a solemn oath, entrusted guardianship or freely accepted responsibility while within the region may become supernaturally heavy. At the DM’s discretion, such a creature has its Speed reduced by 10 feet and has Disadvantage on Strength checks and saving throws made to resist forced movement until it makes meaningful restitution, Atlas releases it from the sign, or it leaves the region. Trivial promises and coerced obligations do not trigger this effect.
Titanic Foundations. Mountains, cliffs and major stone formations subtly seem to lean or orient toward Atlas’s station. When natural tremors strike the region, unstable and badly built structures suffer first, while ancient Titan masonry, observatories and properly founded monuments often remain standing against impossible odds.
The Heavens Press Close. Within 1 mile of Atlas’s Heaven-Bearing Station, the night sky appears impossibly near. Stars seem larger, celestial motion is perceptible to the naked eye and creatures physically feel the pressure of the heavens. A flying creature must spend 2 feet of movement for every 1 foot it moves upward.
The Road to the Verge. Ordinary geography becomes unreliable near the true Heaven-Bearing Station. A traveller cannot reach Atlas merely by travelling farther west. Reaching the station requires celestial navigation, divine guidance, Titan knowledge, an established mythic road or another supernatural means appropriate to the campaign.
If Atlas leaves the Western Verge: the regional effects do not simply switch off. Gravity becomes unstable, constellations appear displaced, mountains groan under changing stresses and terrestrial space begins slipping against celestial space. The longer the Heaven-Bearing Station remains truly vacant, the more severe these disturbances become.

Divine Mechanics

Domains, Powers & Sacred Magic

Strength

Atlas embodies strength used to sustain, hold and endure rather than uncontrolled rage.

Earth

Stone, mountains, earthquakes, foundations and immovability express the earth beneath the Heaven-Bearer.

Air / Sky

The upper air, stars, winds and celestial vault represent the heavens Atlas eternally supports.

Protection

Atlas protects the world by continuing to carry something that cannot safely be dropped.

Suggested Divine Boons

Minor Boon — Bear the Weight

The recipient gains exceptional carrying capacity and an edition-appropriate bonus when resisting forced movement, exhaustion caused by physical labour or the collapse of something they actively support.

Major Boon — Unyielding

Once per rest or equivalent recovery period, the recipient can remain at 1 hit point when an attack would reduce them to 0, provided they are actively defending an entrusted creature, object, place or sworn obligation.

Divine Gift — Strength Beyond Measure

For one mythic task, the recipient can lift, hold or move something beyond the ordinary limits of their statistics.

Mythic History

The Titan Beneath the Heavens

Son of Iapetus and Clymene

In the Hesiodic genealogy, Iapetus and Clymene are parents of Atlas, Menoetius, Prometheus and Epimetheus.

The Titanomachy

Atlas fought for the Titan order against the rising Olympians. When Zeus prevailed, the defeated Titans did not all receive an identical fate.

The Sentence of Atlas

Atlas received a punishment uniquely suited to his power: he was stationed at the far western limit of the mortal world and compelled to bear the heavens. The burden itself is the prison.

SpiralWorlds canon: Atlas is not normally resident in Carceri. His sentence fixes him to the Western Verge of the Material Plane. Pelion in Arborea preserves surviving Titan-age civilisation.

Heracles and the Golden Apples

Atlas becomes central to one of the labours of Heracles. The hero must obtain the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, sacred to Hera. The apples are tended by the Hesperides and guarded by Ladon.

Heracles temporarily bears the heavens while Atlas retrieves the apples. Atlas ultimately reassumes his burden.

Perseus and Medusa

A later tradition tells of Perseus revealing the severed head of Medusa, Mortal of the Three Gorgons and transforming Atlas into a mountain.

SpiralWorlds reconciles this with the continuing Heaven-Bearer by treating the petrified Atlas as a terrestrial manifestation of the greater Titan.

Genealogy

The Family of Atlas

Figure or Group Relationship SpiralWorlds Treatment
Menoetius Brother of Atlas. Titan of the Iapetid generation.
Pleione Oceanid consort in the principal Pleiades genealogy. The Maia tradition preserves Atlas and Pleione as parents.
Pleiades Seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. Major celestial Atlas lineage.
Hyades Frequently assigned to Atlas. Associated with stars and rain.
Hesperides Sometimes daughters of Atlas and Hesperis. Central to the Golden Apples cycle.
Calypso Homeric daughter of Atlas. Calypso, the Sea Enchantress.
Hesperus Sometimes a son or close relative. Hesperus.
Planar Canon

Atlas in the SpiralWorlds Cosmology

Material Plane — Western Verge

The true Atlas remains stationed upon the Material Plane at the boundary where terrestrial geography approaches celestial structure.

Arborea — Pelion

Pelion preserves the surviving realm of the Titan Age.

Carceri — Othrys

Othrys contains exiled Titans and banished gods whose punishments placed them there. Atlas received a different sentence.

Campaign Present · 1454 CE

Atlas in the World of 1454

In 1454, Atlas still bears the heavens. Kingdoms and mortal frontiers have changed repeatedly since the Titanomachy, but the Heaven-Bearer’s sentence continues.

Astronomers and Natural Philosophers

Atlas matters to astronomy, astrology, celestial geometry and theories concerning the boundary between the mortal world and the heavens.

Mariners of the Western Sea

Sailors beyond the Pillars of Heracles encounter traditions of the Hesperides, impossible islands and displaced stars.

The Atlas Mountains

Ancient shrines and petrified manifestations preserve genuine contact with Atlas without requiring the true Titan to abandon his station.

The Name “Atlas”

In 1454, atlas is not yet the ordinary generic term for a bound collection of maps.

For the Game Master

Using Atlas in a Campaign

The Burden Shifts

Astronomers in distant kingdoms independently record the same impossible event: a constellation has moved.

A Second Heracles

Atlas can leave his station for exactly one hour if another being carries the heavens.

The False Mountain

A petrified manifestation created during the Perseus cycle begins to awaken.

The Hesperidean Road

A recovered celestial calculation reveals a route toward the Golden Apples of the Hesperides.

The Broken Oath

A ruler who swore before Atlas to defend a city abandons it. Every burden within the city begins growing impossibly heavy.

The Vacant Station

Atlas disappears from the Western Verge. Gravity falters, constellations drift and the heavens begin pressing closer to the mortal world. The heroes must find Atlas—or find something powerful enough to take his place.

Art & Interpretation

The Celestial Globe

The sphere Atlas bears belongs fundamentally to celestial imagery: stars and the structure of the heavens form the burden.

Guercino’s 1646 painting preserves this distinction. Later convention increasingly encouraged viewers to interpret the sphere as the terrestrial globe, but that later image does not replace the Hellenic Heaven-Bearer in SpiralWorlds canon.

Atlas FAQ

Does Atlas carry the Earth?

No. Atlas bears the heavens or celestial sphere.

Where is Atlas in SpiralWorlds?

His actual station is the Western Verge of the Material Plane. Pelion in Arborea is his Titan-age ancestral connection.

Did Heracles permanently free Atlas?

No. Heracles temporarily carried the heavens, after which Atlas resumed the burden.

Did Perseus turn Atlas to stone?

The tradition is retained, but the Atlas petrified by Perseus using Medusa’s head was a terrestrial manifestation rather than the destruction of the true Heaven-Bearer.

Does Atlas have regional effects?

Yes. A major manifestation of Atlas alters weight, stone, celestial navigation and the apparent distance of the heavens for miles around it. At the Western Verge these effects are part of the local cosmic order rather than ordinary temporary magic.

What happens if Atlas leaves the Western Verge?

Gravity becomes unstable, constellations drift, geological stresses increase and terrestrial space begins slipping against celestial space until Atlas returns or another sufficiently powerful being assumes the Heaven-Bearing burden.

What Challenge Rating is Atlas?

The combat manifestation is built at epic CR 37.

What domains does Atlas grant?

Strength, Earth, Air and Protection.
