The Kingdom of Norway is a realm formed from the unification of smaller petty kingdoms. It stands as a sovereign kingdom within the Kalmar Union, ruled under a shared monarch.

Its territory covers the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula, together with Jan Mayen, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland, with knowledge of the distant Svalbard archipelago. Norway also claims a far southern land, later known as Queen Maud Land.

The kingdom shares a long eastern border with Sweden, meets Finland and Russia in the north-east, and faces the Skagerrak Strait to the south, with Denmark on the opposite shore. Its rugged and extensive coastline opens to the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea, giving Norway its strong maritime character.
