Winter Wolf — Herald of the Frozen North
A great white predator of the frozen wilderness, intelligent enough to plan an ambush and armed with a breath that can kill before the pack closes its jaws.
The Winter Wolf is an intelligent supernatural predator closely related to the worg. Far larger than an ordinary wolf, it combines the speed and coordination of a pack hunter with supernatural resistance to cold and a deadly freezing breath. Its pale coat makes it particularly dangerous amid snow, ice and winter forest, where a pack may watch its prey for some time before choosing the best moment to attack.

Special Abilities
Breath Weapon (Su). Once every 1d4 rounds the Winter Wolf can release a 15-foot cone of supernatural cold. The attack deals 4d6 cold damage. A DC 16 Reflex save halves the damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.
Freezing Bite (Su). A successful bite deals an additional 1d6 cold damage.
Trip (Ex). After hitting with its bite, the Winter Wolf can immediately attempt to trip the opponent using a +8 check modifier. This requires no separate touch attack and does not provoke an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot trip the wolf in return.
Skills
Winter Wolves receive a +1 racial bonus on Listen, Move Silently and Spot checks, and a +2 racial bonus on ordinary Hide checks.
In snow and ice, their natural coloration instead provides a +7 racial bonus on Hide checks. A Winter Wolf also receives a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent.
Appearance
A Winter Wolf resembles an immense white wolf, but its scale and bearing quickly betray its supernatural nature. A typical adult is about eight feet long, stands roughly four and a half feet at the shoulder and weighs approximately 450 pounds.
Its coat ranges from snow-white to pale blue-grey and is dense enough for the most severe winter conditions. Frost often gathers around the muzzle when the creature prepares its freezing breath, while its pale eyes reveal an awareness far beyond that of a mundane animal.
Winter Wolves are not simply oversized wolves. They are speaking, reasoning predators capable of deliberate cooperation, negotiation, long-term hostility and tactical withdrawal.
Behaviour and Intelligence
Winter Wolves are cunning and malevolent hunters. Hunger matters to them, but their behaviour cannot be reduced to animal instinct. They understand territory, fear, loyalty, advantage and revenge, and they can pursue goals extending well beyond their next meal.
Some hunt alone or as mated pairs, but packs are central to their ecology. Their cooperation is deliberate. One wolf may drive prey from cover while another waits along an escape route, or several animals may hold their attack until their quarry has clustered tightly enough for freezing breath to strike several targets together.
Winter Wolves are close supernatural relatives of worgs, but are larger, more strongly adapted to severe cold and substantially more dangerous.
Habitat and Ecology
Winter Wolves favour cold forests, tundra, frozen plains, high mountain wilderness and other regions where snow, ice and severe weather disadvantage less specialised prey.
A pack may centre its territory upon a cave, glacial hollow, ravine, abandoned fortress or sheltered woodland den while ranging many miles beyond it to hunt. Intelligent packs learn paths, settlements, migration routes and defensible positions throughout their territory.
Winter Wolves are particularly associated with frost giants. They may serve giant settlements as scouts, guards, hunting companions and trackers. Some also associate with hill giants or other sufficiently powerful peoples when the arrangement is profitable.
Winter Wolves in SpiralWorlds
In the campaign present of 1454, Winter Wolves belong to the supernatural wilderness rather than to the ordinary wolf populations of Europe and the wider world.
The representative Winter Wolf on this page is drawn from a northern Scandinavian population. Such wolves commonly speak Giant, Norwegian and Northern Sámi, reflecting the giant communities and human peoples with whom they interact. Winter Wolf populations living elsewhere learn the languages of their own regions instead.
They are most likely to survive in truly cold northern country, remote high mountains, giant-held wilderness and other places where supernatural forces reinforce severe winter conditions. Magical cold can also sustain isolated packs well outside their ordinary climatic range.
Hunting and Combat
Observe First
The pack identifies stragglers, injured travellers, frightened mounts and poorly positioned enemies before committing to an attack.
Open with Cold
When several opponents stand close together, a Winter Wolf prefers to begin with its breath weapon before moving into biting range.
Put Prey Down
Across all three supported rules systems, bringing prey to the ground is a central element of the creature’s fighting style.
Pack Fighting
A competent Winter Wolf pack does not simply charge every enemy at once. Several wolves may pressure the visible front of a group while others circle through snow, woodland or broken terrain toward weaker positions.
Against obviously superior opponents, they are intelligent enough to break contact. A pack may continue shadowing its enemies, attack later in worse weather or deliberately draw pursuers into ground where snow and ice favour the wolves.
Advancement, Size and Challenge Rating
D&D 5.5e / 2024
The standard 2024 Winter Wolf is CR 3. Its published statistics do not provide a fixed Hit Dice advancement ladder.
A stronger alpha, unusually ancient individual or giant-bred war wolf should therefore be built as a deliberate variant and assigned a Challenge Rating from its completed statistics. Age or status alone does not automatically increase CR.
Pathfinder 1e
The standard Pathfinder Winter Wolf is CR 5. The Pathfinder entry does not inherit the old D&D 3.5e 7–18 HD advancement line. Advanced Pathfinder individuals should use Pathfinder’s own creature-advancement rules.
D&D 3.5e
The D&D 3.5e progression is explicit. The ordinary creature begins at 6 HD. Individuals of 7–9 HD remain Large. At 10 HD the Winter Wolf becomes Huge and can continue advancing to 18 HD.
Encounter Ideas
The Silent Escort
Enormous tracks begin appearing beside a winter road. The wolves do not attack. Instead, they are deliberately driving travellers away from land claimed by giants. Whether the behaviour is a warning, a hunt or an order from the giants is not immediately clear.
The Empty Settlement
A snowbound settlement appears abandoned, yet there are few signs of a direct assault. Something intelligent has been separating its inhabitants and taking them beyond the settlement a few at a time.
The Giant’s Hounds
A frost giant community rarely patrols one of its borders directly. Winter Wolves do the work, locating trespassers and deciding whether to attack, observe them or return to the giants with information.
