Yemoja (Yemayá) — Yoruba Mother of Waters

Yemoja (Yemayá) — Yoruba Mother of Waters

Yemoja, Yoruba mother orisha of waters, maternity and protection standing amid living waters
Yemoja as mother of waters: river-born in Yorubaland, vast enough to carry into the Atlantic world.

Yoruba tradition · Rivers · Motherhood · Protection · Fertility · Living water

Yemoja is a major Yoruba water orisha and maternal power. In Yorubaland she is closely associated with rivers, streams, springs and especially the Ògùn River; in later Atlantic traditions, Yemayá/Iemanjá expands into a great sea-mother. The page keeps those layers connected without pretending they are identical.

Divine Mechanics

Encounter role: Defender/support. Balance: the printed CR assumes the deity uses its full Legendary Actions each round. Sacred Site Actions are additional encounter pressure and are not included in the base CR.

Yemoja is a protector-controller. Her epic power lies in sustaining life, redirecting water and making attacks on dependants catastrophically expensive.

Traits

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Yemoja fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Mother of Waters. Yemoja can breathe air and water, move through water without slowing, and sense every creature touching the same connected body of water within 1 mile.

Protected Children. When Yemoja or an ally within 60 feet with half its hit points or fewer is damaged, Yemoja gains one Tide token (maximum 5). She can spend Tide tokens to empower abilities.

Divine Spellcasting. Wisdom is her spellcasting ability (save DC 33, +25 to hit). At will: Create or Destroy Water, Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration. 3/day each: Control Water, Greater Restoration, Heal. 1/day each: Mass Heal, Regenerate, Tsunami.

Actions

Mother-River Strike. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: +25 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 120 ft. Hit: 36 (4d10 + 14) Force plus 22 (4d10) Cold damage.

Gather the Family (Recharge 5–6). Up to six willing creatures within 120 feet teleport to spaces within 20 feet of Yemoja and each regains 35 hit points. Enemies adjacent to the arrival spaces are pushed 20 feet, Strength DC 33 negates.

River Becomes the World (1/Day). A 60-foot-radius area becomes supernatural deep water for 1 minute. Allies gain swim speeds and can breathe water; enemies treat the area as difficult terrain and make DC 33 Strength saves at the start of their turns or are moved 30 feet by the current.

Reactions

Not My Child. When a creature within 60 feet would drop to 0 hit points, Yemoja spends 1 Tide token to reduce it to 1 hit point instead and surround it with water granting Resistance to all damage until the start of its next turn.

Legendary Actions

  • Flow. Move up to half speed.
  • Mother-River Strike. Make one attack.
  • Wash Away Harm (Costs 2). End one poison, disease, curse or Frightened condition on an ally within 60 feet.
  • Protective Flood (Costs 3). Spend any number of Tide tokens; each token restores 20 hit points split among allies within 60 feet.

Sacred Site Actions

  • Rising Water. Water fills a 30-foot-radius area to 10 feet deep until next round.
  • Safe Bank. Allies within 30 feet gain half cover and cannot be forcibly moved until next round.
  • Answer the Cry. Yemoja immediately learns the location of every child or dependent creature in danger within the sacred site.

Use Yemoja Tonight

The River Gives Back the Children

Three children lost in a flood return unharmed days later, each carrying the same shell and refusing to say where they were.

The Well That Will Not Empty

A besieged town’s sacred well cannot be exhausted, but every bucket drawn from it causes a distant tributary to fall.

The Mother of Two Shores

A priest dreams of Yemoja standing simultaneously in a river and an unknown ocean, pointing toward people across the world who have not yet met.

The Boat of Names

A small unmanned vessel drifts upriver against the current carrying carved names of women and children who are still alive.

Mythic Identity

Recent scholarship and museum interpretation make an important distinction: in Yorubaland, Yemoja is primarily associated with rivers, streams, springs and fresh water, while in the diaspora she is often represented as an oceanic mother. Treating her as “always the sea goddess” erases that development.

African Arts describes Yemoja as “Mother of Fish,” a maternal figure associated with women, especially pregnancy, and with sources of fresh water. Smithsonian archives also document Yemoja imagery and ritual life among Yoruba communities.

Her sacred force is not softness. Water nourishes, carries, floods, erodes, protects and remembers. Maternal power on this page includes fierce defence of children and community continuity.

What Is Yemoja Doing Right Now?

Yemoja is attentive to settlements where water and family survival have become inseparable political problems: wells controlled by rulers, riverbanks seized by soldiers, pregnancies endangered by famine, and children displaced by war.

She also senses the long movement of Yoruba sacred traditions beyond their original river landscapes. The campaign present stands before the later Atlantic transformation, but divine powers can perceive roads history has not yet finished walking. Dreams of wider waters therefore appear as prophecy rather than anachronistic geography.

Regional Effects

  • Water Finds the Vulnerable. Within 6 miles, lost children and injured travellers near fresh water are easier to track; natural currents tend to carry them toward inhabited banks rather than hazards when possible.
  • Wells Resist Waste. Clean communal wells and springs refill slightly faster, but water deliberately hoarded for extortion turns brackish within a day.
  • Birth Rooms Quiet. Within 1 mile of a consecrated shrine, magical fear and nightmare effects affecting pregnant people or children are weakened.
  • Pollution Reveals Itself. Poisoned or cursed water cannot perfectly imitate clean water; trained observers can identify visible, olfactory or magical signs.
  • Fish Return. Healthy rivers recover ordinary fish and aquatic life unusually quickly after nonmagical disruption.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

Water, Healing, Protection, Community and Life fit Yemoja’s clerics best. Suitable spells include Create Water, Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, Water Breathing, Control Water, Greater Restoration, Heal, Mass Heal and Tsunami.

Relics

The Vessel That Returns Water

Water poured from this vessel always finds the nearest community that genuinely lacks safe water.

The Shell of the Many Children

When held to the ear, this great shell carries the distant voices of dependants calling for help rather than the sound of surf.
