Glaistig — Green Lady of the Highlands
A Glaistig is a powerful Scottish fey guardian associated with green clothing, lonely places, households, cattle and the dangerous generosity of the land. Some quietly protect a farm for generations; others haunt ravines, woods and waters, punish neglect, deceive travellers or answer an insult with frightening force.
Game Statistics
The statistics below model the exceptionally powerful earth-bound Glaistig represented in Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary 5. A traditional household or cattle-fold encounter does not have to become a CR 21 battle: a Glaistig can first appear through omens, bargains, missing cattle, impossible household work, misleading paths or demands for restitution.

Traits
Airbane. The Glaistig’s Regeneration and Sylvan Grace function only while she is touching solid ground. If she takes Thunder damage while grounded, both traits are suppressed until the start of her next turn.
Earth Glide. The Glaistig can burrow through nonmagical, unworked earth and stone without disturbing the material she moves through.
Freedom of Movement. Difficult Terrain doesn’t cost the Glaistig extra movement. Magic can’t reduce her Speed or cause her to have the Paralyzed or Restrained condition unless she chooses to be affected.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Glaistig fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. The Glaistig has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Regeneration. The Glaistig regains 20 Hit Points at the start of her turn if Airbane isn’t suppressing this trait. She dies only if she starts her turn with 0 Hit Points and doesn’t regenerate.
Reveler’s Rapture. A creature of the Glaistig’s choice that starts its turn within 30 feet of her must succeed on a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or be Charmed until the start of its next turn. While Charmed this way, the creature dances in place: its Speed is 0, it has Disadvantage on attack rolls and Dexterity saving throws, and attack rolls against it have Advantage. A creature that succeeds on the save is immune to this Glaistig’s Reveler’s Rapture for 24 hours.
Sylvan Grace. While grounded, the Glaistig’s Armor Class is 20 and her earth and leaf attacks use Charisma for their attack and damage modifiers. Airbane suppresses this trait.
Spellcasting. The Glaistig casts the following spells without Material components, using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 22, +14 to hit with spell attacks):
At Will: create or destroy water, pass without trace, transport via plants
3/Day Each: confusion, flesh to stone, move earth, wall of thorns
1/Day: earthquake
Actions
Multiattack. The Glaistig makes three attacks, using Earth Whip or Leaf Blast in any combination.
Earth Whip. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 15 ft. Hit: 29 (4d10 + 7) Bludgeoning, Piercing, or Slashing damage, chosen when the attack is made. If the target is Huge or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 22 Strength saving throw or fall Prone and be pulled up to 10 feet toward the Glaistig.
Leaf Blast. Ranged Attack Roll: +14, range 150 ft. Hit: 33 (4d12 + 7) Slashing damage.
Witch of the Fey (1/Turn). Immediately after the Glaistig hits a creature with Earth Whip or Leaf Blast, she can force that creature to make a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, she chooses one effect: Agony deals 18 (4d8) Psychic damage and prevents the target from taking Reactions until the start of its next turn; Misfortune forces the target to subtract 1d8 from the next d20 Test it makes before the end of its next turn.
Deadly Earth (Recharge 5–6). The Glaistig ruptures a 30-foot-radius patch of ground she can see within 120 feet. Each creature of her choice in the area makes a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) Bludgeoning and Slashing damage on a failure or half as much on a success. The area becomes Difficult Terrain until the end of the Glaistig’s next turn.
Legendary Actions
The Glaistig can take 3 Legendary Actions, one at a time, at the end of another creature’s turn. She regains all spent uses at the start of her turn.
Rootstep. The Glaistig moves up to half her Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks. She must end this movement touching the ground.
Earth Whip or Leaf Blast (Costs 2 Actions). The Glaistig makes one Earth Whip or Leaf Blast attack.
Rapture Pulse (Costs 3 Actions). Each creature of the Glaistig’s choice within 30 feet that isn’t immune to her Reveler’s Rapture immediately makes the saving throw against that trait.

1/Day Each: flesh to stone, transport via plants
Actions
Multiattack. The Glaistig makes three attacks, using Earth Whip or Leaf Blast in any combination.

Leaf Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 90 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (4d8 + 5) slashing damage.
Hexing Strike (1/Turn). When the Glaistig hits with Earth Whip or Leaf Blast, the target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take 13 (3d8) psychic damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll or saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn.
Legendary Actions
The Glaistig can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. She regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.
Grounded Step. The Glaistig moves up to 20 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Earth Whip or Leaf Blast (Costs 2 Actions). The Glaistig makes one Earth Whip or Leaf Blast attack.
Terrakinesis (Costs 3 Actions). The Glaistig casts entangle, move earth, or another available earth- or plant-shaping spell.

Special Abilities
Airbane (Ex). A Glaistig’s Sylvan Grace and regeneration are suppressed whenever she is in the air. While she is grounded, attacks made of pure elemental air can also suppress her regeneration for the normal regeneration interval.
Infusions. A Glaistig can apply the listed kineticist form and substance infusions to blasts granted by Terrakinesis without accepting burn for the base infusion cost. She cannot voluntarily accept additional burn to increase an infusion’s effect.
Reveler’s Rapture (Su). A Glaistig radiates a 30-foot aura of bacchanalian euphoria. A creature entering the aura is affected as though by irresistible dance unless it succeeds on a DC 32 Will save. Even on a successful initial save, the creature dances for 1 round. Affected creatures can attempt a new save at the end of each later turn to end the effect and become immune to that Glaistig’s aura for 24 hours. The Glaistig can exclude creatures from the aura.
Sylvan Grace (Su). A Glaistig adds her Charisma bonus as a deflection bonus to AC and to attack and damage rolls made with non-melee earth and leaf blasts.
Terrakinesis (Sp, Su). A Glaistig wields earth wild talents as a 20th-level kineticist, manifesting them as blended earth and plant matter. She can use earth blast and a special physical composite leaf blast without burn. Leaf blast deals slashing damage and can carry deadly earth, entangling, impale, pushing and universal infusions available to the Glaistig.
Witch of the Fey (Su). A Glaistig can use the blight, disguise, fortune and misfortune minor hexes; agony and retribution major hexes; and the natural disaster grand hex as a 20th-level witch. The save DCs are Charisma-based. On a successful melee attack she can apply agony, misfortune or retribution as an additional effect. An earth or leaf blast can carry one of these hexes to every creature damaged by that blast.

Special Abilities
Airbane (Ex). The Glaistig’s Regeneration and Sylvan Grace are suppressed whenever she is not touching the ground. While grounded, a supernatural or spell-like effect composed purely of elemental air suppresses regeneration for 1 round after it damages her.
Earth Glide (Ex). A Glaistig can glide through natural earth or stone as easily as a fish swims through water, leaving no tunnel or sign of passage.
Reveler’s Rapture (Su). Creatures entering or beginning their turn within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 32 Will save or dance as though affected by irresistible dance. On a successful initial save a creature still dances for 1 round. At the end of each later turn an affected creature can attempt another save; success ends the effect and grants immunity to that Glaistig’s aura for 24 hours. The Glaistig can exclude any creature she wishes. The save DC is Charisma-based.
Sylvan Grace (Su). While grounded, the Glaistig gains a deflection bonus to Armor Class equal to her Charisma bonus. Her ranged earth and leaf attacks use Dexterity to hit and add her Charisma bonus to damage.
Terrakinesis (Su). Earth Blast and Leaf Blast are supernatural physical attacks and are not subject to spell resistance. As a standard action instead of making a blast, the Glaistig can create one of the following effects, save DC 32 where applicable: Deadly Earth fills a 30-foot-radius patch of ground within 120 feet for 1 round; creatures entering or beginning their turn there take 15d6 bludgeoning and slashing damage, Reflex half. Grasping Earth affects a 20-foot-radius area within 120 feet; creatures that fail a Reflex save become entangled and unable to leave their squares until they escape with a DC 32 Strength or Escape Artist check. Earthen Wall functions as wall of stone, but the wall can appear as intertwined root, packed earth and stone.
Witch of the Fey (Su). Once per round after the Glaistig damages a creature with Earth Whip, Earth Blast or Leaf Blast, she can force that creature to make a DC 32 Will save. On a failure she chooses one effect: Agony leaves the target nauseated for 1 round; Misfortune forces the target to roll twice and take the worse result on attack rolls, saving throws and skill checks for 1 round; Retribution causes the target to take 4d6 damage the first time it damages another creature before the end of its next turn. The save DC is Charisma-based.
What Is a Glaistig?
The Glaistig belongs to the supernatural traditions of the Scottish Highlands and islands. The older surviving descriptions do not reduce her to one appearance or one moral role. She can be a tutelary being attached to a household, a cattle fold or a particular stretch of land; a solitary Green Lady; an omen-bringer; a punisher of neglect; a shape-changer; or a dangerous presence in lonely places.
This makes the Glaistig unusually useful in play. The same being who keeps calves from wandering in the night can become the reason a shepherd will not cross one ravine after sunset. A household may regard her as an old protector while travellers know only stories of a green-clad woman who leads people away from the road.
The powerful earth-fey described in the game statistics represents one extreme of that tradition: an ancient Glaistig whose bond to land and vegetation has become strong enough to move earth, unleash leaf and stone as weapons, regenerate while grounded and overwhelm intruders with supernatural revelry.
The Older Scottish Tradition
John Gregorson Campbell’s Superstitions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, published in 1900 from material collected from oral sources, describes the Glaistig as a thin grey woman with long yellow hair and green clothing. Some were attached to houses; others watched cattle, sheep and horses. They might work at night, punish negligent servants, protect vulnerable people or announce approaching joy and disaster through cries and wailing.
The cattle-fold Glaistig is especially important. In several traditions she acts like a supernatural herdswoman. Milk is left for her at a stone near the fold. When the offering or an expected duty is neglected, the result is not abstract bad luck: calves get among the cows, milk fails, tools are disturbed or somebody receives a memorable supernatural punishment.
Shape-changing also appears in the tradition. Some stories give the Glaistig the form of a horse or dog, while broader Green Lady traditions allow deceptive human appearances. The goat-legged form familiar from modern fantasy is therefore a useful manifestation, not the only authentic way a Glaistig can look.
Dogs recur as a point of friction. Campbell records Glaistigs disliking dogs, while steel could also keep them away. Gifts of clothes or shoes could offend a Glaistig badly enough to make her leave. These details are more useful at the table than a generic vulnerability because they create customs the characters can discover before violence begins.
Appearance
A Glaistig most often presents herself as a woman in green, sometimes young and beautiful, sometimes grey-faced and weathered, with long pale or golden hair. Her movement can be unnaturally smooth and quiet. The most powerful earth-bound Glaistigs may show greenish skin, pupil-less eyes and bestial lower legs hidden beneath a long gown, echoing the Pathfinder interpretation.
No single outward form is mandatory. A household Glaistig may look almost human. A ravine-haunter may be glimpsed only as green cloth and pale hair. A furious elder may reveal goat-like legs, inhuman eyes and a body visibly threaded with root, leaf and stone.
Origin and Fey Bond
Different Glaistigs give different answers about what they are. Some claim to have been spirits of earth, pasture or water long before a particular household existed. Others are remembered as former mistresses of a house or women placed under enchantment. Still others behave like members of the wider fey population whose identities have become inseparable from one farm, glen, herd or watershed.
The common element is the fey bond: the Glaistig is not merely living near a place. Her power, habits and sense of obligation have become connected to it. That is why the same creature can seem generous one season and terrifying the next. She is judging whether people are keeping the relationship she believes exists.
Some Glaistigs move between Earth and the Fey World, especially through Faerie Hills, ravines, old woods and water-bound crossings. Others remain attached to one mortal holding for generations and show little interest in wider fey politics.
Behaviour
Protector
A Glaistig can guard cattle, redirect danger, move earth, bring water, finish neglected work and quietly keep a household functioning. Her help is usually conditional rather than charitable.
Punisher
Neglect, cruelty, contempt for her favourites, failure to maintain an offering or deliberate damage to her land can provoke escalating retaliation.
Deceiver
Glaistigs can mislead travellers, conceal their real appearance and bend the truth. The powerful game form is particularly skilled at deception and magical misfortune.
Judge of Truth
The Pathfinder tradition gives Glaistigs a striking hypocrisy: they can dissemble themselves but take grave offence when somebody lies to them. Once a lie is exposed, negotiation may collapse immediately.
A Glaistig is therefore best run as a being with rules rather than random mood swings. Her conduct may be capricious from a human perspective, but there should be a discoverable relationship between the offence and the response.
Glaistigs in Scotland
Within the Kingdom of Scotland, Glaistig traditions are strongest in Highland and island landscapes where cattle, seasonal pasture, ravines, lochs, old houses and isolated holdings give their bonds something concrete to attach to.
A Glaistig may be known to only one household. The neighbouring glen might deny she exists. Elsewhere a whole district knows the exact stone where milk must be poured in summer, which dog must never be allowed near the fold, or why nobody offers the Green Lady a new cloak even in the worst weather.
Her relationship with Christianity, local saints, older sacred places and the Fey World depends on the individual. A Glaistig is not automatically a goddess, demon or ghost simply because people interpret her through one of those categories.
Signs a Glaistig Is Nearby
| Sign | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Milk disappears from a stone beside a fold | A local offering is still being observed, even if nobody admits why. |
| Cattle are found safely gathered after the herdsman failed | Something is doing the work that should have been done by people. |
| Locked rooms sound busy at night | A household-attached Glaistig may be tidying, preparing for guests or expressing disapproval. |
| Dogs refuse a ravine or erupt into frantic pursuit | The Glaistig may be close, and the dog may make the encounter worse. |
| A green-clad woman is seen at dusk and then cannot be followed | The observer may have seen the Glaistig herself, or only the form she wanted seen. |
| Unexplained wailing precedes a wedding, death or disaster | The Glaistig may be announcing an event before the household knows it is coming. |
| A path repeatedly returns travellers to the same place | The local fey power wants them delayed, redirected or kept away. |
Running a Glaistig Encounter
Begin with the obligation, not the stat block. Decide what the Glaistig believes she protects: a herd, a family, a watercourse, a woodland edge, a cattle route, an old house, a ravine or a compact between several of these.
Then decide what changed. Someone stopped leaving milk. A new tenant mocked the custom. Soldiers seized cattle. A road crew cut into the ravine. A priest ordered an old offering stone broken. A child vanished and the village blamed the Green Lady. The players should be able to discover the broken relationship through evidence and conversation.
| Stage | Escalation |
|---|---|
| 1. Warning | Tools move, cattle refuse gates, milk spoils, dogs react, footsteps cross locked rooms or a green figure watches from a distance. |
| 2. Correction | The Glaistig undoes work, redirects animals, blocks a route, embarrasses the negligent or forces somebody into a humiliating fool’s chase. |
| 3. Punishment | Hexes, blight, supernatural dancing, dangerous misdirection and direct threats begin. Negotiation is still possible. |
| 4. Open Wrath | The earth itself joins the confrontation. The high-level Glaistig uses terrakinesis, movement through stone, ranged blasts and manipulated terrain to dominate the battlefield. |
Combat Tactics
A Glaistig wants to fight on natural ground. That is not scenery; it is part of her defense. She uses Reveler’s Rapture to disrupt the party’s action economy, then punishes exposed targets with hexes and ranged earth or leaf attacks. Earth Glide and terrain control allow her to change angles without giving melee specialists a stable target.
She avoids sustained aerial combat. In every edition, the most reliable mechanical counterplay is to separate her from the ground. Flight, forced movement, levitation, collapsing bridges, airborne grapples and elemental-air effects become more valuable than simply increasing damage.
Against a strong party she does not stand in one place exchanging attacks. She breaks lines of sight, moves through earth, turns the ground into difficult terrain, isolates a charmed or dancing enemy and withdraws if the land she protects would suffer more from the battle than from letting the intruders escape.
How to Avoid the Fight
Tell the truth. A direct admission of fault is safer than flattering deception. The game tradition makes exposed lies especially dangerous.
Repair the broken obligation. Return cattle, restore a watercourse, replace what was taken, repair the fold or resume a local custom if the custom is not itself harmful.
Use an appropriate offering. Milk, food, drink, jewellery, fine craftwork and valuable wooden or stone objects all fit the traditions. Do not assume expensive clothing is a safe gift: some Highland accounts specifically describe clothes or shoes as offensive.
Keep dogs under control. A barking or pursuing dog can turn a tense encounter into a chase.
Do not mistake courtesy for submission. A Glaistig can accept a bargain without becoming a servant, ally or worshipper.
Bound Glen and Household Effects
A Glaistig who has remained attached to the same place for years can produce persistent local effects. These are expressions of her bond rather than universal powers possessed by every member of the kind.
- Herd Sense. She becomes aware when cattle, sheep or horses under her protection are scattered, trapped or driven away within the holding.
- Night Work. Simple neglected household or farm work can be completed, undone or deliberately rearranged while people sleep.
- Warning Cry. Her wailing or rejoicing can precede a major event affecting the household without explaining exactly what will occur.
- Fey Misdirection. People who have offended her find paths, gates and familiar rooms strangely difficult to navigate, especially after dark.
- Pasture’s Favour. When relations are good, animals remain calmer, water lasts longer and small hazards are noticed or corrected before becoming disasters.
Destroying the house or driving away the family does not automatically end the bond. Some Glaistigs follow a place rather than a bloodline; others do the opposite. Discovering which kind the characters face can decide the entire adventure.
Behavioural Variants
House Glaistig
Attached to a building or family. She announces visitors, moves furniture, finishes work, punishes neglect and may become a household omen.
Fold Glaistig
A supernatural herdswoman whose relationship with cattle and milk offerings dominates local custom. She can be fiercely protective of animals under her care.
Ravine or Water Glaistig
More remote and more dangerous. She misdirects travellers, uses water and difficult terrain, and may be remembered chiefly through disappearances and warnings.
Elder Earth Glaistig
The form represented by the CR 21 Pathfinder and 5.5e statistics: an ancient land-bound fey whose personal displeasure can become a regional magical event.
Relations with Other Fey
Glaistigs share themes with several neighbouring fey traditions without being interchangeable with them. The Huldra is another dangerous northern woodland woman associated with attraction and deception. Satyrs make the goat-legged appearance less extraordinary within fey society, but they do not share the Glaistig’s household and cattle-guardian traditions.
Stories of fey attraction and dangerous hospitality also connect naturally to Faerie Seduction. A Glaistig can use beauty, music, dancing and companionship to delay travellers without becoming reducible to a seduction monster.
Adventure Hooks
| The Empty Milk Stone | A new landholder ends an old nightly offering as superstition. Within a week the cattle are breaking fences, milk will not keep and every dog on the estate howls toward the same ravine. |
|---|---|
| The Green Herdswoman | Raiders steal a valuable herd but are found miles away, terrified and surrounded by cattle that refuse to move. The Glaistig wants the animals returned; the laird wants the raiders executed first. |
| The House That Prepares Itself | Locked rooms are cleaned and laid for guests nobody expects. Three nights later armed strangers arrive claiming an inherited right to the property. |
| The Gift of Shoes | A grateful family gives its unseen protector a pair of fine shoes. The Glaistig vanishes immediately, and every danger she had quietly prevented begins happening at once. |
| The Lie in the Glen | A local official blames missing children on the Green Lady. She knows he is lying, refuses every messenger he sends and begins dismantling the road that carries his soldiers into the valley. |
| The Air Above the Stones | A high-level party can survive the Glaistig’s wrath, but defeating her requires discovering why old stories insist that she loses strength when torn away from the earth. |
Treasure, Gifts and Remains
The Pathfinder Glaistig carries double treasure, but a Glaistig’s meaningful wealth should tell the history of her relationships. Jewellery may have been given at a marriage. A carved cup may mark a century-old truce. A wooden staff or stone talisman may be valuable because of who made it rather than because of raw gold value.
Milk, food and craftwork are often more appropriate offerings than coins. Powerful Glaistigs may prefer a magical object of wood or stone, especially when a bargain is meant to acknowledge her bond with land rather than simply purchase mercy.
Harvesting a slain Glaistig should have consequences. Hair, blood, horn, leaf-grown clothing and earth touched by her regeneration can be valuable magical materials, but killing a local tutelary being may also remove protections the community never understood it possessed.
