Choose Your Class

5.5e / 2024 · Pathfinder 1e · D&D 3.5e

Your class is the rules package that describes what your character can reliably do under pressure. Choose the class that supports the actions you want to take in play, then use that class page’s section for your campaign edition only.

Fantasy player characters representing different adventuring classes in SpiralWorlds
A class is a game role, not a social identity. A Fighter can be a guard, mercenary, knight or caravan veteran; a Wizard can be a university scholar, court astrologer, guild-trained practitioner or private apprentice.
Player’s Manual rule: class mechanics are edition-specific. Lore, profession and social role may be shared across editions, but Hit Dice, proficiencies, class features, spell progression, skills, saves and level progression may not be mixed.

Choose by playstyle

What do you want to do when play becomes dangerous?

Stand in the fightIf you want weapons, armour and direct battlefield presence, start with Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger or Monk.
Win through skillIf you want stealth, expertise, mobility, investigation or opportunism, start with Rogue, Bard or Ranger.
Use learned or innate magicIf spells are the main attraction, look first at Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Cleric, Druid or Bard.
Build around a distinct traditionArtificer and Witch are additional SpiralWorlds class options. Use them only where the class page supplies mechanics for your campaign edition or the Games Master approves a conversion.

For a first character: choose a class because its normal turn sounds enjoyable, not because its title sounds impressive. If you want the most direct martial starting point, Fighter is usually the easiest place to begin.

Edition procedure

Record the correct class rules

D&D 5.5e / 2024

In the 2024 rules, class is the first major character-creation choice. The twelve core classes are Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock and Wizard.

When you choose the class: write the class and starting level on the sheet, note the class’s Hit Die, armour training, weapon proficiencies, saving-throw proficiencies, skill choices and the level-1 features or choices the class gives you. Then continue to Origin and Ability Scores; you will return to the class while filling in the final character details.

ClassPrimary abilityGood first choice if you want…
BarbarianStrengthDurability, Rage and forceful melee combat.
BardCharismaSkills, support, social play and flexible magic.
ClericWisdomDivine magic, support and resilient spellcasting.
DruidWisdomNature magic, transformation and battlefield control.
FighterStrength or DexterityWeapons, armour and straightforward martial mastery.
MonkDexterity and WisdomMobility, disciplined unarmed combat and precision.
PaladinStrength and CharismaArmoured combat, healing, divine magic and an oath.
RangerDexterity and WisdomWeapons, exploration, tracking and nature magic.
RogueDexterityExpertise, stealth, mobility and precise attacks.
SorcererCharismaInnate arcane power and focused spellcasting.
WarlockCharismaPact magic and strongly customisable supernatural abilities.
WizardIntelligenceLearned magic and the broadest emphasis on spell study.
Additional classes: Artificer and Witch are not part of the twelve-class 2024 Basic Rules list. SpiralWorlds may provide 5.5e material for them, but the Games Master decides whether those additional classes are available in the campaign.

Pathfinder 1e

Choose a Pathfinder class and use its PF1e rules only. Record Hit Die, base attack progression, saving throws, class skills, skill ranks, weapon and armour proficiencies and all 1st-level class features.

Pathfinder also asks you to choose a favored class, normally the class you take at 1st level. Each level taken in that favored class can grant the Pathfinder favored-class benefit used by your campaign.

Do not assume the 5.5e class page applies. If a SpiralWorlds class page has a clearly labelled Pathfinder 1e section, use it. If it does not, use an approved Pathfinder source or ask the Games Master whether that class is available.

D&D 3.5e

Choose a D&D 3.5e class and record its Hit Die, base attack bonus progression, Fortitude/Reflex/Will save progressions, class skills, skill points, proficiencies and 1st-level class features.

Use the 3.5e version of the class. Pathfinder classes often look similar but include changed skills, features, progressions and terminology, so PF1e mechanics are not a substitute for 3.5e mechanics.

Prestige classes come later. Do not choose a prestige class as an ordinary 1st-level starting class unless the campaign has an explicit exception. Prestige classes normally have prerequisites that must first be earned.

Class in the setting

Decide what the class looks like in this person’s life

TrainingWho taught the character: family, guild, military company, court, university, temple, master, coven, patron or self-directed practice?
ProfessionWhat job did the character actually perform before adventuring? Class and profession are not automatically the same thing.
HomelandHow does the character’s region treat this kind of training or supernatural practice?
AuthorityDoes a lord, guild, temple, university, military office, patron or household claim any right over the character’s service?
EquipmentWhich weapons, armour, books, tools or symbols does the class require, and could the character realistically have obtained them?
ReputationWhat would an ordinary person call the character? Most people in the world do not introduce themselves using a rules-system class label.
Example: “Fighter” is the game class. “Free-city crossbowman,” “household man-at-arms,” “mercenary captain” or “dispossessed knight” is the identity people in the world recognise.

Optional rule

Multiclass only when the concept needs it

A first-time player does not need to multiclass. A single class already provides a complete progression and is usually easier to learn.

2024 multiclassing lets you take a level in another class when you gain a level. You must normally have at least 13 in the primary ability of both the class you already have and the class you are entering. Proficiency Bonus uses total character level, while class features use levels in the relevant class.

Pathfinder 1e multiclassing combines levels from different classes, but class features remain tied to levels in each class. Favored-class benefits and prestige-class prerequisites also matter. Use PF1e rules only.

D&D 3.5e multiclassing uses the 3.5e rules for class levels, experience and prestige-class prerequisites. Do not import Pathfinder favored-class rules or later 5.5e proficiency rules.
