Paris is the largest city in the realm, and indeed one of the largest cities in Europe. The political, economic, religious, and cultural capital of France it is the site of the royal palace and the Notre Dame Cathedral. As well as the University of Paris, training scholars first in theology, and law, medicine and the arts. It is also the centre of commerce and finance. The merchants who controlled the trade on the river have formed a league and become a powerful force.
