France in the Campaign Present
In 1454 France is emerging from more than a century of intermittent war with England. The great phase of the Hundred Years’ War has ended only the previous year, after the French reconquest of Guyenne and the fall of Bordeaux. Charles VII rules a kingdom that is stronger than the one he inherited, supported by more regular taxation, permanent military formations and increasingly effective royal artillery. Yet France is not politically simple: Burgundy remains a major power, great nobles possess their own interests and networks, and regions recently recovered by the crown do not instantly become quiet or uniform.
For SpiralWorlds, this makes France an ideal adventuring realm. Royal officers, Burgundian agents, mercenaries, displaced soldiers, highwaymen, urban factions and ambitious nobles all have reasons to hire, deceive or pursue adventurers. The historical framework remains recognisable, but the supernatural world exists alongside it.

Myth, Legend & Folklore
There is no single, uniform “French mythology.” The supernatural traditions of France are layered from regional folklore, heroic legend, medieval romance, chansons de geste, fairy belief, werewolf traditions and later literary retellings. In SpiralWorlds these traditions are not dismissed as stories invented by later writers: they preserve distorted memories of real people, creatures, curses, enchanted places and supernatural events.
That approach allows figures such as Roland, Robert the Devil, Bluebeard, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood to stand beside historical people without pretending that their surviving texts were all written in 1454. A later printed or literary version may preserve a much older tale, while a famous name can be the form by which modern readers recognise an ancient in-world tradition.
