Class Feature – Paladin (Oath of Chivalry)

Roland is a 15th-level paladin, and his abilities include Divine Sense, Lay on Hands, Divine Smite, Divine Health, Sacred Oath (Oath of Chivalry), Aura of Protection, and Aura of Courage.

Mounted Combatant. He is a skilled mounted warrior. He gains the following additional abilities:

  • Steed of Durandal. He is always accompanied by his loyal steed, a warhorse named Veillantif. While mounted on Veillantif, he has advantage on saving throws to avoid falling off the horse and gains a +2 bonus to his attack rolls when making melee attacks from horseback.
  • Lance. He wields a lance while mounted. He can make a special charge attack while mounted on Veillantif. If he moves at least 20 feet in a straight line toward a target and then makes a melee attack with his lance on the same turn, the target takes an extra 2d10 piercing damage.

Actions

Multiattack. Roland makes three attacks with Durandal.

  • Durandal. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d8 + 5) slashing damage.
  • Charge (Recharge 5-6). If he is mounted on Veillantif, he can make a charge attack. He moves at least 20 feet in a straight line toward a target and then makes a lance attack on the same turn. The target takes an extra 2d10 piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions

Holy Fervor. He can use a bonus action to gain advantage on his next attack roll. If the attack hits, it deals an additional 3d8 radiant damage.

Divine Mount (Recharge 6). He can summon Veillantif to his side as a bonus action. If Veillantif is already present, he can dismiss him as a bonus action.

Reactions

Shield of Faith. When a creature makes an attack roll against Roland, he can use his reaction to grant himself a +2 bonus to AC against that attack.

Legendary Actions (3/Day)

Roland can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Roland regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

  • Dismount. He dismounts from Veillantif, gaining an additional 10 feet of movement for this turn.
  • Defensive Strike. He makes one attack with Durandal.
  • Knight’s Command. He issues a command to his allies, allowing one ally to make a melee attack as a reaction.

Equipment

  • Plate armor
  • Durandal (Longsword). A legendary blade that glows with radiant energy. This sword can channel Roland’s divine smite with incredible power. (Longsword stats, plus bonus radiant damage on a hit)
  • Lance. A finely crafted lance designed for mounted combat. (Lance stats)
  • Veillantif (Warhorse). A loyal and well-trained warhorse that serves as Roland’s trusted steed.
  • Olifant (Legendary Horn). A magical horn with the power to call allies from great distances or inspire them with courage. (See Olifant section below)
  • Holy symbol
  • Paladin’s kit (backpack, bedroll, mess kit, tinderbox, torches (10), rations (10), waterskin, rope, holy symbol)

Olifant (Legendary Horn)

  • The Olifant is a powerful legendary horn associated with Roland.
  • Once per long rest, Roland can use the Olifant to blow a mighty call for aid. This call can summon allies from great distances, bringing reinforcements to his location.
  • Additionally, the Olifant can inspire courage in those who hear it. Any ally who hears the sound of the Olifant gains advantage on saving throws against fear effects and gains temporary hit points equal to Roland’s Charisma modifier.
  • The Olifant’s magic extends to the battlefield, bolstering the resolve of Roland and his allies.

With these additions, Roland, with Durandal, Veillantif, and the legendary Olifant, becomes a formidable knight and a symbol of chivalry in your D&D campaign, ready to defend the realm against all threats and inspire others with his heroic presence.

Notes: Roland uses a shield when fighting with his lance from his horse. When he fights off the horse, he will usually use Durendal two-handed, even if he can use it one-handed, and drop the shield. His Ca would accordingly drop to 19, touch 11, flat-footed 18

Burst of speed: Roland may urge his mount to greater than normal speed when charging, doubling the maximum distance the mount can travel when making a charge, up to four times its speed.

Full mounted attack: Roland can make a full attack when his mount moves more than 5 feet, but no farther than a single move action would carry it. He cannot combine this full attack with a charge

Mounted weapon bonus: Roland has a +3 bonus on attack rolls with sword and lance while mounted.

Unstoppable: Roland may once per day gain a +20 bonus on his Strength check to break or burst a door or item once per day. As a special use of this ability, he can attempt to break a Wall of Force (Strength DC 32, and the character applies his unstoppable bonus to this check as well). Alternatively, Roland can apply the +20 bonus to a single attack roll.

Unstoppable charge: 5/day, while mounted and using the charge action, Roland may attempt an unstoppable charge. If he hits, he deals quadruple damage with a melee weapon, or quintuple with a lance. If he misses the attack roll, the attempt is failed and can’t be tried again. This ability does not stack with the Spirited Charge feat.

Unmovable: Roland can make himself unmovable once per day. This power grants Roland a +20 bonus on any one of the following:

  • A grapple check made to avoid being grabbed with the improved grab ability.
  • A Strength check to avoid the effects of a bull rush, trip attempt, or similar effect.
  • A Strength check against any effect that would move the character either physically or magically.
  • Any one saving throw. If an effect that would move Roland either physically or magically does not normally allow a saving throw, he can use this ability to gain a Will saving throw. He still gains the +20 bonus on the saving throw in such a case.

Possessions

The Olifant

Rolland’s legendary horn, the Olifant may be heard from miles and miles, but the magical sound may be dangerous for the user. Using as a normal horn causes no damage. By sacrifying 10 hp, the user may cause 3d6hp of sonic damage to all in a 30 feet radius, 2d6 in a 31-60 feet radius and 1d6 in a 61-90 feet radius, and the sound may be heard up to 50 miles. Every additional 50 miles, the damage to the user increase by 5 hp, and the damage to others increase by 1d6, as well as the radius of the damaging blast (by a factor of 30 feet), with a minimum of 1d6 in the outermost radius.

So for example if the user wants the sound to reach someone which is 250 miles off, the blow will cause him (10 + 20) 30 hp. All creatures in a 30 feet radius will suffer 7d6 hp of damage, the ones between 31 and 60 feet 6d6, and so on up to the creatures between 181 and 210 feet which will suffer only 1d6 hp of damage. The maximum damage the user may suffer is 50 hp (450 miles).
