Tsukuyomi — Moon Kami, Night and the Lunar Calendar

Japanese Pantheon · Moon Kami, Night and the Lunar Calendar

Tsukuyomi measures time by the changing moon. Izanagi appoints this kami to govern the night; in one account, an estrangement from Amaterasu helps explain why sun and moon travel apart.

Sacred Attributes

Mythic Role

The moon is not merely a source of cold light. It is a calendar, a witness to promises and the way farmers, sailors and shrine attendants know which night has arrived.

Worship in the Present World

At a moon shrine, the keeper of the calendar is an important public officer. Planting, the opening of fishing seasons, and ceremonies that must occur on a named lunar date depend on a reliable count. A false observation can become a political weapon without any overt magic.

Moon rites use cleansing, offerings and careful timing. The worshipper wants to know when a duty falls due, not command a permanent full moon. A coastal observer and a court astrologer may dispute the same omen without either being a villain.

What Tsukuyomi Is Doing Now

Temple record-keepers are comparing moon observations across Japan after several nights were entered twice in an official calendar. Tsukuyomi does not announce the answer from the sky; mortal witnesses must find the missing records. A river pilot, a court astronomer and a village priest have each been ordered to conceal a different part of the count.

Cleric Domains and Spell Access

Each edition panel now includes the deity’s complete personal Divine Spellcasting repertoire for this encounter. The separately linked cleric-domain guides contain the spells and subclass features granted to worshippers; those are not the deity’s own spell list. Original campaign conversions require GM approval.

  • Moon Domain — Original D&D 5e campaign and Pathfinder Moon subdomain; not official 2024.
  • Night Domain — Original D&D 5e campaign and Pathfinder Night subdomain; not official 2024.
  • Knowledge Domain — 2014, Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e rules; any 2024 treatment must be labelled as a campaign adaptation.
  • Law Domain — Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e.

Edition access: a 2014 or 2024 Cleric obtains the always-prepared spells of their actual, supported subclass at the printed Cleric levels. Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e Clerics generally select two appropriate domains and use one additional domain spell slot per spell level they can cast. None of these traditions grants every spell from every associated domain automatically.

Relationships and Divine Politics

Tsukuyomi is usually numbered among the three noble children of Izanagi. The Kojiki largely leaves the moon kami outside later stories; one Nihon Shoki variant tells of the killing of the food kami Ukemochi and ensuing estrangement from Amaterasu. The episode is a variant, not a universal account. In play that separation makes Tsukuyomi a god of difficult measures and consequences, not simply an evil opposite to the sun.

Related gods: Amaterasu · Izanagi and Izanami · Susanoo

Where Worship Is Found

The moon kami is honoured at a subsidiary shrine of Ise and in other traditional sacred precincts. In the campaign, night-watchmen at coastal shrines compare their own records with those of farming villages and traveling merchants.

Omens and Adventures

  • The missing month. A calendar used by three villages omits an entire lunar cycle. Boats leave on the wrong tide and the priest who protested has disappeared. The party must find the earlier records and the people paid to alter them.
  • The oath under the new moon. A lord insists the marriage treaty signed just after midnight was signed on another lunar day. Witnesses disagree, and a night shrine is asked to supply the only neutral record.
  • Ukemochi’s banquet. A militant cult reenacts one variant of the myth as if it were binding on every shrine. The conflict threatens next season’s planting rites; the party must identify the deliberate forgery.

Mythological and Historical Context

The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki preserve different births and portfolios for Tsukuyomi. The right-eye ablution is prominent in the Kojiki; another account makes the moon kami complement to the sun in heaven. The food-kami incident and estrangement of the two luminaries appears in one Nihon Shoki variant. Tsukuyomi is separately worshipped at Ise, while later moon-waiting fraternities should not be projected unchanged back into antiquity.
