Worship in the Present World

Amaterasu’s worship is strongest wherever sunlight, purity, harvest, lawful succession and sacred authority meet. Ise remains her pre-eminent sanctuary, but shrines dedicated to her are found across Japan. Priests maintain rites of purification, offerings and seasonal renewal, while rulers and households alike understand that the favour of the sun goddess is not simply warmth: it is the continued legitimacy of an ordered world.

Her attention is recognised through impossible daylight, mirrors that reveal what darkness concealed, dreams of the heavenly plain, the sudden ending of supernatural night and commands carried from shrines whose custodians dare not ignore them. Direct bodily appearance is rare because lesser signs already carry enormous political and religious weight.

Divine Mechanics

Campaign Divine Tier 38 describes Amaterasu’s setting-scale power and is not an official SRD challenge rating. The statistics below are deliberate epic campaign extensions. Deity-scale ability scores and challenge values are not capped at ordinary monster limits.

Traits

Legendary Resistance (6/Day). If Amaterasu fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. Amaterasu has Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.

Sun Unveiled. Magical darkness of 8th level or lower is suppressed within 120 feet of Amaterasu. Hostile creatures that start their turn within 30 feet of her take 14 (4d6) radiant damage unless she chooses otherwise.

Dawn Cannot Be Imprisoned (1/Day). When reduced to 0 Hit Points outside Takamagahara, Amaterasu instead becomes untargetable light until the end of her next turn, then returns with 405 Hit Points. All magical darkness within 1 mile ends.

Divine Spellcasting

Amaterasu casts divine magic using Charisma (spell save DC 31, +23 to hit with spell attacks). She has the Light Domain as her primary 5.5e cleric expression and full campaign access to the Sun, Law and Protection portfolios where those domain rules are in use. Signature spells include daylight, dispel magic, greater restoration, flame strike, sunbeam, sunburst, control weather and gate.

Actions

Multiattack. Amaterasu makes three Ray of the High Sun attacks.

Ray of the High Sun. Ranged Spell Attack: +23 to hit, range 240 ft. Hit: 39 (6d8 + 12) radiant damage. A creature hit cannot benefit from invisibility until the start of Amaterasu’s next turn.

Yata Mirror — Revealing Light (Recharge 4–6). Amaterasu projects a 90-foot cone of reflected heavenly light. Each hostile creature in the area makes a DC 31 Constitution save, taking 72 (16d8) radiant damage and becoming blinded until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage without being blinded on a success. Shapechangers and creatures concealed by illusion immediately reveal their true form.

Heavenly Daybreak (Recharge 5–6). A 60-foot-radius sphere centred on a point Amaterasu can see within 300 feet erupts in sunlight. Hostile creatures make a DC 31 Dexterity save, taking 88 (16d10) radiant and fire damage on a failure or half on a success. Allies of Amaterasu in the area regain 40 Hit Points.

Legendary Actions

  • Solar Step. Amaterasu moves up to half her Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
  • Ray. Amaterasu makes one Ray of the High Sun attack.
  • Purifying Light (Costs 2). One creature Amaterasu can see within 120 feet ends one charmed, frightened, poisoned or magically blinded condition affecting it.

Yata Mirror (Su). As a standard action every 1d4 rounds, Amaterasu releases a 90-foot cone; creatures take 20d6 fire damage plus 20d6 untyped divine damage, Reflex DC 38 half. Illusions and shapechanging effects are exposed as true seeing.

Solar Rebirth (Ex). Once per day, destruction outside Takamagahara instead disperses Amaterasu into sunlight; she reforms 1 round later with half her hit points and all ability damage removed.

Spell-Like Abilities

Divine rules. Divine Rank applies to attacks, saves, checks and armour as normal for a greater deity. Portfolio spell-like abilities function at caster level 28th.

Salient Divine Abilities

Signature salient abilities include Divine Blast, Divine Radiance, Divine Shield, Divine Splendor, Extra Domain (Sun), Gift of Life, Rejuvenation, Supreme Initiative and True Knowledge, alongside additional rank-appropriate abilities chosen to express sunlight, purification and sacred sovereignty.

Portfolio Spell-Like Abilities

Amaterasu can use the spell-like abilities granted by the Sun, Law and Protection domains at divine caster level, together with campaign Light-domain equivalents where used. Her sunlight effects count as natural sunlight for creatures harmed by the sun.

Defeat and Return

Defeating Amaterasu in combat does not extinguish the sun. Outside Takamagahara, destruction disperses her divine body into radiance; true and lasting defeat requires action against her divine standing and realm rather than ordinary hit-point loss.

Divine Powers, Domains and Sacred Treasure

Light

Light is the clearest 5.5e expression of Amaterasu’s direct solar power: illumination, revelation and the destruction of supernatural darkness.

Sun

Sun governs the older domain expression of daylight, solar judgment and the destruction of creatures that cannot endure the sun.

Law

Law reflects heavenly order, rightful succession and the distinction between legitimate authority and usurpation.

Protection

Protection governs purification, sanctuary and the defence of communities threatened by supernatural darkness or pollution.

Yata no Kagami — the Sacred Mirror

The Yata no Kagami is not ordinary treasure. It is one of the three sacred treasures associated with the heavenly descent and the imperial line, and the mirror is the object most directly bound to Amaterasu. In the campaign it functions as a deity-scale artifact of revelation and legitimate authority: false forms cannot persist before it, supernatural darkness is broken by its reflected light, and claims of sacred sovereignty may be tested against it. It is never assumed to be available as routine adventuring loot.

Behaviour, Relationships and Divine Politics

Amaterasu values order, purity, continuity and reciprocal obligation. She is not passive: the heavenly rock-cave myth shows that when violence and pollution make divine society intolerable, she can withdraw her presence entirely and force the other kami to confront the consequences.

Susanoo is her most important disruptive relationship. His violence precipitates the rock-cave crisis, but later traditions also preserve reconciliation and the presentation of the sword found in Yamata-no-Orochi. Ame-no-Uzume restores movement and laughter when the heavenly court has become paralysed by darkness. Izanagi is the parent from whose purification Amaterasu emerges in the Kojiki tradition.

Where Worship Is Found

Ise Jingū is Amaterasu’s pre-eminent sanctuary. The Inner Shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Ōmikami and enshrines the sacred mirror as her symbol. Beyond Ise, her worship is carried through shrine networks, pilgrimage, household devotion and rites tied to harvest, purification and heavenly protection.

In the campaign present, devotion to Amaterasu is strongest in Japan but travels with Japanese courts, shrine families, warriors, merchants and migrants. A shrine founded far from the islands still looks toward the same sun.

Omens, Cults and Adventure Use

Signs of Favour

Clouds part at the moment an oath is sworn; a sacred mirror catches sunlight underground; dawn arrives early over one threatened settlement.

Signs of Warning

Mirrors cloud despite perfect polishing; noon light becomes strangely cold; a shrine casts a shadow in the wrong direction.

Temple Conflict

Rival rulers claim the same omen as proof of heavenly legitimacy, forcing shrine authorities to decide whether either claimant truly speaks with divine favour.

Direct Divine Pressure

When supernatural darkness spreads across a province, Amaterasu may demand purification, restitution or the removal of the cause before full daylight returns.

Adventure Hooks

  • A sacred mirror reflects a second sunrise over a province where night has begun lasting too long.
  • Two rival courts claim the same solar omen while the shrine that witnessed it insists both interpretations are wrong.
  • A procession bound for Ise disappears on a road that remains brilliantly illuminated after sunset.
  • A sword linked to Susanoo is carried into an Amaterasu shrine and every mirror in the precinct turns toward it.

Mythological and Historical Context

The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki preserve multiple versions of Amaterasu’s origin and relationships. The Kojiki places her birth in Izanagi’s purification after Yomi; other early traditions preserve variant accounts. The rock-cave episode, her sovereignty in Takamagahara and the heavenly descent of Ninigi became foundational parts of Japanese sacred and political mythology.

Ise Jingū remains the central living sanctuary of Amaterasu. Its own account identifies the Inner Shrine with Amaterasu Ōmikami and the sacred mirror, while the shrine’s annual ritual cycle is deeply tied to rice cultivation, offerings and renewal.
