Orunmila — Yoruba Orisha of Wisdom, Fate and Ifa

Orunmila, Yoruba orisha of wisdom, destiny and Ifa divination with divination tray and palm nuts
Orunmila with the instruments of Ifa: wisdom made usable through divination, memory and right action.

Yoruba tradition · Ifa · Wisdom · Destiny · Divination · Ethical guidance

Orunmila is the Yoruba orisha of wisdom, destiny and Ifa divination. His power is not omniscience in the crude sense of “knowing everything.” It is the capacity to understand the patterns that connect action, character, consequence and destiny, then to communicate that knowledge through disciplined divination.

Divine Mechanics

Encounter role: Controller/oracle. Balance: the printed CR assumes the deity uses its full Legendary Actions each round. Sacred Site Actions are additional encounter pressure and are not included in the base CR.

Orunmila’s threat is epistemic and causal. He wins by knowing which decision matters, not by pretending wisdom is another damage type.

Traits

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Orunmila fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Witness of Possibility. At the start of combat Orunmila rolls six d20s and records the results. When any creature he can perceive within 300 feet makes a d20 Test, he may use a Reaction to replace the roll with one recorded result. Each result can be used once.

No Surprise in the Pattern. Orunmila cannot be surprised, has Advantage on initiative, and knows when a creature he can perceive is deliberately lying.

Divine Spellcasting. Wisdom is his spellcasting ability (save DC 36, +28 to hit). At will: Detect Thoughts, Divination, Greater Restoration, Scrying. 3/day each: Foresight, Legend Lore, Plane Shift. 1/day each: Gate, Wish, but Wish cannot directly erase another deity.

Actions

Multiattack. Orunmila uses Word of Consequence twice, or uses Word of Consequence once and casts one spell with a casting time of an action.

Word of Consequence. One creature within 120 feet makes a DC 36 Wisdom save. Failure: 55 (10d10) Psychic damage and Orunmila learns one significant intention the creature currently means to carry out.

Path Not Taken (Recharge 5–6). Orunmila chooses up to five creatures within 120 feet. Each makes a DC 36 Charisma save. On a failure the creature is displaced into the consequence of an alternate decision until the end of its next turn: it is Incapacitated and then returns to its space, taking 44 (8d10) Psychic damage.

Resolve the Cause (1/Day). Orunmila ends one curse, possession, domination effect or fate-altering effect he can perceive within 120 feet unless created directly by a deity of equal or greater rank.

Bonus Actions

Step Between Outcomes. Orunmila teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space he could have reached by ordinary movement since the start of his previous turn.

Legendary Actions

  • Read the Move. One creature within 120 feet reveals whether it intends to attack, move, cast a spell or take another action on its next turn.
  • Change the Result. Use one result from Witness of Possibility.
  • Foreseen Rebuke (Costs 2). One creature takes 36 (8d8) Psychic damage, Wisdom DC 36 half.
  • Return to the Better Path (Costs 3). One ally within 120 feet repeats one failed saving throw or regains 50 hit points.

Sacred Site Actions

  • Reveal the Hidden Cause. One invisible creature, illusion or concealed magical effect within 120 feet is revealed until the next round.
  • Fix the Moment. Initiative order is rearranged; Orunmila chooses the next creature to act after him.
  • Odu of Restraint. Creatures of Orunmila’s choice within 30 feet cannot take Reactions until the next round.

Use Orunmila Tonight

The Answer Nobody Wants

Three rulers consult the same diviner. The castings differ, but every interpretation requires the same politically impossible act.

The Missing Verse

An essential Ifa verse disappears from every living diviner’s memory overnight. One elderly storyteller who never trained as a diviner still remembers it.

The Destiny That Changed

A person whose future had been divined repeatedly begins producing impossible results. Something has not merely concealed the future—it has altered the conditions under which that future was chosen.

Eshu at the Edge of the Tray

The face of Eshu carved on a divination board changes expression between castings. The message is not in the odu alone.

Mythic Identity

Smithsonian National Museum of African Art collections describe Yoruba diviners consulting Orunmila, god of wisdom or fate, to understand the cause of misfortune and to secure blessings and advice on important undertakings. The ritual technologies of Ifa—palm nuts, divining chain, carved tray and remembered verses—matter because divine knowledge is accessed through trained interpretation rather than casual prophecy.

That makes Orunmila particularly useful in play. He is not an oracle vending spoilers. A correct divination may identify the real shape of a problem while still leaving mortals responsible for action. Knowing that pride will destroy an alliance does not tell a king how to become less proud.

The face of Eshu commonly appears on Ifa divination boards. Smithsonian interpretation explicitly identifies Eshu there as messenger of the gods and a force of chance and change. Destiny and chance are therefore not enemies on these pages; they are parts of the same living system.

What Is Orunmila Doing Right Now?

Orunmila is concerned with rulers and communities making irreversible choices under false certainty. Wars, dynastic disputes, migrations and magical crises create pressure to demand simple answers from divination. His response is usually the opposite: reveal the hidden condition, identify the moral cost and force the petitioner to decide knowingly.

His strongest favour falls on people who act differently after learning the truth. A divination ignored for convenience can become a warning. A difficult instruction obeyed at real cost can turn disaster into a narrower path through it.

Regional Effects

  • Patterns Repeat. Within 6 miles, meaningful numbers, phrases, dreams and coincidences recur around unresolved decisions.
  • False Prophecy Frays. Deliberately fabricated omens acquire visible inconsistencies; a skilled diviner gains Advantage or the edition-equivalent bonus to expose them.
  • The Hidden Cause Surfaces. Once per day, a sincere investigation into a major misfortune uncovers one verifiable clue pointing toward its real cause.
  • Divination Deepens. Divination magic and trained Ifa practice can reveal one additional relevant consequence, though never a guaranteed outcome.
  • Destiny Resists Theft. Effects that erase identity, memory or destiny are easier to detect within 1 mile and cannot conceal themselves from Orunmila.

These are campaign manifestations of divine presence, not claims that historical Ifa practice behaves as game magic.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

Knowledge, Fate, Divination, Community and Protection are the strongest themes for Orunmila’s clerics. Suitable spells include Augury, Detect Thoughts, Divination, Scrying, Commune, Legend Lore, Greater Restoration, Foresight and Gate.

Gift: One More Reading

Once per long rest after failing an Intelligence or Wisdom check, a devotee may reroll it after spending one minute reconsidering the evidence.

Gift: Name the Consequence

Once per long rest before a willing creature makes a major declared choice, the devotee may learn one likely immediate consequence if the choice succeeds.

Relics

The Tray of the Unforgotten Verse

An opon Ifa on which erased marks return whenever the questioner has omitted a fact necessary to understand the answer.

The Sixteen Palm Nuts of Returning Counsel

When cast for someone who has ignored earlier sound advice, the ikin reveal the ignored instruction before answering anything new.
