Faery Regal: The Immortal Monarchs of Beauty, Shadow, and Feywild Intrigue
Create

The Faery Regal are the ancient sovereigns of fae kind—immortal rulers who preside over the shimmering courts between worlds with a charm as lethal as any blade. Equal parts divine and dreadful, they embody nature’s perfection and peril, weaving illusions, dreams, and destinies into the mortal realm. Their presence bends reality: flowers bloom in their wake, shadows whisper secrets, and mortals forget their own names in awe of their splendor. Worshipped, feared, and obeyed by lesser fae, the Faery Regal are arbiters of eternal beauty, vengeance, and the ever-turning balance of the Feywild.

The Dual Courts

The Seelie and Unseelie Faery Regals are bound by the oldest law of Faerie—the Balance of Beauty and Decay. Neither can permanently destroy the other. When one rises in power, the other’s influence wanes, and the seasons of the Feywild shift accordingly.

Those who bargain with one court inevitably draw the attention of the other. Heroes who earn the favor of the Seelie may find themselves hunted by the Gloaming Court, while those who ally with shadow may be illuminated—and destroyed—by dawn. This endless cycle of rise and fall maintains Faerie’s eternal rhythm, where joy and sorrow, creation and ruin, reflect the same divine order.

Appearance

Radiant beyond mortal comprehension, a Faery Regal appears as an androgynous figure of flawless grace, subtly shifting with the seasons or the moods of their court. Crowns of living flora, jewels of starlight, and robes spun from moonbeams or autumn mist adorn them. Their eyes shimmer with impossible hues—gold laced with violet flame, or the mirrored light of dawn over frozen lakes—revealing both infinite wisdom and inhuman detachment.

Behaviour

Faery Regals move with deliberate elegance; every gesture conveys command. They speak in riddles, songs, or half-truths, expecting worshipful obedience. Though outwardly serene, their temperament can shift in an instant—from benevolent host to wrathful deity—reflecting the mercurial nature of the fey. They often act through emissaries or illusions, revealing their true selves only to those worthy… or doomed.

Habitat

These monarchs dwell in palatial demesnes woven from dream and nature: crystalline courts beneath eternal twilight, mirror-lakes reflecting other worlds, or living fortresses grown from ancient trees. Each Faery Regal’s domain embodies its essence—verdant realms of endless summer, frost-bitten kingdoms of sorrow, or labyrinthine shadow palaces hidden beneath mortal hills.

Modus Operandi

The Faery Regal rarely fights directly; they command, enchant, and reshape reality. In battle, they wield glamour and illusion—turning allies into foes, bending time, or summoning the very forest to their will. They prefer manipulation over bloodshed, drawing mortals into binding pacts or elaborate games where the stakes are soul, memory, or destiny.

Motivation

Driven by aesthetic perfection, dominion, and cosmic balance, the Faery Regal seeks to preserve the eternal rhythm of the Feywild and the sanctity of beauty itself. Some strive to elevate mortals through art and ecstasy; others delight in humbling them through cruelty and chaos. Whether Seelie or Unseelie, all pursue visions of order comprehensible only to themselves—an empire of wonder that must endure beyond the ruin of mortal time.

Radiant Sovereign of the Summer Court
Medium fey, lawful good

Lore

In the golden heart of the Feywild, beyond mortal memory, reigns the Seelie Regal — a being of blinding grace and immortal law. Known as the Radiant Sovereign, this archfey embodies the perfection of harmony, beauty, and order. To gaze upon one is to see sunlight given form: skin like dawnfire, eyes of mirrored sky, and hair flowing in endless bloom.

The Seelie Regal commands the Summer Court, a realm where every breeze hums with symphonic joy and every leaf gleams like a gem. They preside over eternal festivals of art, love, and nature’s prosperity. Yet beneath that glory lies a cruel mercy — the Regal’s sense of beauty admits no flaw. Mortals who offend their aesthetic or breach etiquette may be remade into living crystal or trapped within songs of eternal sorrow.

Despite their otherworldly detachment, Seelie Regals are guardians of balance, forever opposing the encroaching chaos of the Gloaming Courts. They bless the worthy, elevate heroes, and intervene when mortal cruelty threatens the world’s natural harmony.

Legends claim that when a Seelie Regal weeps, the first tear to touch the ground blossoms into a golden lotus that grants visions of paradise.

Each creature of the regal’s choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute. While charmed, the creature regards the regal as divine and cannot willingly attack it.

Luminous Majesty (Mythic Trait; Recharges after a Long Rest).

When the regal drops to 0 hit points, it dissolves into radiant petals and reforms with 200 hit points. For 1 minute, it regains 20 hit points at the start of its turn, and its healing and radiant damage rolls deal maximum results.

Actions

Multiattack. The regal makes three Radiant Scepter attacks.

Radiant Scepter. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) radiant damage. The target must succeed on a DC 25 Charisma saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

Command of Harmony (Recharge 5–6). The regal issues a divine decree. Up to three creatures of its choice within 60 feet must make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or be affected by mass suggestion (no concentration required).

Legendary Actions

The Seelie Regal can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Graceful Step. The regal teleports up to 30 feet in a swirl of petals.
  • Solar Flare (Costs 2 Actions). The regal emits blinding light in a 30-foot radius. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 25 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
  • Word of Life (Costs 3 Actions). The regal restores 50 hit points to a creature it can see within 60 feet, or revives a creature that has died within the last minute with 1 hit point.

Regional Effects

The domain of a Seelie Regal is suffused with radiant harmony:

  • Within 6 miles, the land remains in eternal spring and sunlight never fades.
  • Flowers bloom in symmetrical patterns, and peaceful thoughts drift through the air.
  • Any creature completing a long rest here gains the benefits of greater restoration.

If the regal dies, the domain dims into mourning twilight until another takes its place.

Shadow Monarch of the Gloaming Court
Medium fey, chaotic neutral (often evil)

Lore

Where moonlight drowns in mist and laughter curdles into lament, there reigns the Unseelie Regal — the Shadow Monarch of the Gloaming Court. These archfey embody the beauty of endings, the poetry of decay, and the cruel necessity of change. They are not merely rulers of darkness but its philosophers, seeing death and sorrow as instruments of renewal.

An Unseelie Regal appears as a vision of tragic splendor: skin pale as moonstone, eyes deep as the void between stars, and garments woven from living shadow. Their voice carries the timbre of forgotten songs and broken vows. Mortals who hear it often weep without knowing why.

To the Unseelie, mercy is deception and chaos is truth. They guide their court of mournful jesters, shadowdancers, and cursed lovers in endless masquerades that celebrate despair as a form of art. Mortals who stumble into their realms may be exalted as muses or hollowed into obsidian statues that whisper their regrets for eternity.

The Seelie call them tyrants; mortals call them nightmares. Yet the oldest fey know that without the Unseelie Regal’s shadow, the light of the Summer Court would burn the Feywild to ash.

At will: darkness, dispel magic, invisibility, phantasmal killer
3/day each: blight, dominate person, greater invisibility, teleport, power word stun
1/day each: feeblemind, weird, wish (malicious or ironic intent only)

Aura of Dread.

Each creature of the regal’s choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. While frightened in this way, a creature takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage at the start of each of its turns.

Shadow Sovereignty (Mythic Trait; Recharges after a Long Rest).

When the regal drops to 0 hit points, its body collapses into smoke and reforms with 200 hit points. For 1 minute, all bright light within 300 feet is extinguished, and its attacks and spells deal maximum damage.

Actions

Multiattack. The regal makes three Shadowblade attacks.

Shadowblade. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (4d8 + 9) necrotic damage. The target must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or have its Strength score reduced by 2d4 until the end of its next long rest.

Command of Despair (Recharge 5–6). The regal’s words echo with ruin. Up to three creatures of its choice within 60 feet must make a DC 25 Charisma saving throw or fall under the effect of dominate person for 1 minute (no concentration required).

Legendary Actions

The Unseelie Regal can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Fade Into Shadow. The regal teleports up to 30 feet into dim light or darkness.
  • Nightmare Glare (Costs 2 Actions). The regal targets one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed with fear until the end of its next turn.
  • Soulrend (Costs 3 Actions). The regal targets one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must make a DC 25 Charisma saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Regional Effects

The domain of an Unseelie Regal is warped by its shadowed majesty:

  • Within 6 miles, the sky remains in perpetual twilight, and all bright light is reduced to dim.
  • Shadows whisper secrets and mock those who linger too long.
  • Dreams within this region twist into nightmares reflecting the dreamer’s guilt and hidden desires.

A creature that finishes a long rest in the regal’s domain must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or gain one level of exhaustion.
If the regal dies, its domain collapses into formless shadow for a century before the darkness heals itself.

This creature is obviously a noble of the woodland realm. An aura of power and nobility surrounds him; a crown of golden leaves encircles his horned head. His smile is confident and mocking; a sword made of bloodied ice sits comfortably in his hand.

Faery regals are the nobility of the fey, the children and cousins of the kings and queens of the eternal woodland. They spend most of their time engaged in courtly intrigues and diversions in the depths of Faery, only occasionally deigning to take notice of mortals or lesser fey.

Rarely, a bored noble will toy with a wandering shepherdess or woodsman (or an adventuring party or a whole mortal kingdom – such things are all equally petty to the regals). They are consummate diplomats and deceivers; they breathe honeyed words and many-layered speeches full of tricks and traps. Their magical abilities are equally great, as the regals are infused with the full power of the Faery realm. They can shift form with ease and twist the senses of those around them.

Regals are almost always accompanied by a host of lesser fey, from satyrs and sprites to nymph courtesans and Fey Knight defenders.

A Faery Regal avoids combat except on its own terms. One might agree to a duel or draw its sword to thrash some impudent mortal wretch who did not appreciate the gift of asses’ ears or who ate the wrong fruit at the banquet, but by and large they dislike open combat. When pressed, they retreat behind a wall of fey to gird themselves in magic before returning to annihilate their foes. They are immortal and have memories to match, often weaving webs of vengeance that take centuries to come to completion.

Call fey (Su): A regal is usually accompanied by 1d4+1 Fey Knights, 1d6 nymphs and 2d6 Seelie Faeries of random kinds. If these are not present, he may call them at the rate of one per round as a free action. They appear within 30 feet of the regal.

Curse (Sp): As a free action, a Faery Regal may cast bestow curse on an opponent who is in melee combat with him. The save DC is 24 (this save is Charisma-based). A regal may only curse an opponent once and only after the opponent injured the regal.

Keenness (Su): Any weapon in the Faery Regal’s hands is automatically a keen weapon and deals a minimum of 1d6 points of damage. A regal can slice an opponent up with a blade of grass if he wishes to.

Magic Arms and Armour (Su): A Faery Regal can conjure a +3 keen rapier and an ornate +3 keen longbow at will. He may also dismiss these items freely.
