Obá — Yoruba River Orisha of Endurance and Sacred Bonds

Yoruba tradition · River · Endurance · Loyalty · Marriage · Sacred bonds
Obá is the Yoruba orisha of the Obá River and a divine power of endurance, loyalty and binding relationship. Her stories are often remembered through marriage to Shango, but she is not merely “one of Shango’s wives.” The river, the bond and the cost of loyalty belong to Obá herself.

Traits
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Obá fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Keep the Bond. When Obá willingly accepts damage that would be dealt to an ally within 60 feet, she has Resistance to that damage.
Weight of the Oath. Obá instantly knows when a creature she can hear knowingly breaks a promise made during the current encounter.
Divine Spellcasting. Charisma is Obá’s spellcasting ability (save DC 30, +22 to hit). At will: Sanctuary, Shield of Faith, Zone of Truth. 3/day each: Control Water, Protection from Energy, Warding Bond. 1/day each: Geas, Heroes’ Feast, Mass Heal.
Actions
Multiattack. Obá makes two River Blade attacks, or makes one River Blade attack and casts one spell with a casting time of an action.
River Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +22 to hit, reach 10 ft. Hit: 34 (4d10 + 12) Slashing plus 18 (4d8) Force damage.
Bind the Promise (Recharge 5–6). Up to four creatures within 90 feet make a DC 30 Charisma save. On failure, each is bound to one declared action it voluntarily promised since its last long rest. If it knowingly acts against that promise before the end of its next turn, it takes 45 (10d8) Psychic damage and becomes Restrained by spectral river-cords.
River That Endures (1/Day). Obá creates a 60-foot-long river barrier for 1 minute. Allies crossing it gain 30 temporary hit points; hostile creatures entering it take 27 (6d8) Force damage and have their speed halved.
Reactions
I Will Carry It. When an ally within 60 feet takes damage, Obá can take that damage instead and immediately move up to 20 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Legendary Actions
- Stand Fast. Obá gains Resistance to all damage until the start of her next turn.
- River Blade. Make one River Blade attack.
- Call the Broken Promise (Costs 2). One oathbreaker within 60 feet takes 27 (6d8) Psychic damage and must save DC 30 Wisdom or fall Prone.
- Hold the Line (Costs 3). Allies within 30 feet cannot be forcibly moved until Obá’s next turn.
Sacred Site Actions
- River Wall. A 30-foot-long wall of rushing water appears until next round.
- Witness the Vow. All creatures in the site hear the exact wording of one oath broken there within the previous year.
- Endure. Obá and allies regain 25 hit points and end one level of Exhaustion.

Use Obá Tonight
The River Keeps the Promise
A treaty sworn beside the Obá River remains magically binding decades after both signatories die. Their heirs want release without admitting why.
The Marriage Knife
A ceremonial blade vanishes from a household shrine before a politically crucial marriage. Every attempt to replace it causes the new blade to rust overnight.
The Bank That Will Not Break
Floodwater destroys every defence except one old embankment maintained by a family nobody in power remembers rewarding.
The Cost of Staying
A guardian spirit refuses to abandon a doomed settlement because of an oath made generations ago. Obá’s priests insist endurance and self-destruction are not the same virtue.
Mythic Identity
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture identifies Obá as goddess of the Obá River and depicts her alongside Oya and Osun as distinct Yoruba deities connected through Shango traditions. That distinction matters: relationship is part of Obá’s story, not the whole of her divine identity.
Her most famous marriage traditions are often retold as stories of painful loyalty and sacrifice. In campaign play, the important theme is not passive suffering. Obá understands what promises cost. She knows the difference between honouring a bond and letting another person consume the self in the name of loyalty.
The river gives that theme physical shape. It persists, bends, floods, cuts new banks and outlasts the people who name it. Endurance is not immobility.
What Is Obá Doing Right Now?
Obá is drawn to marriages used as political contracts, hostage agreements, inherited obligations and families whose survival depends on promises made before the current generation was born.
She rarely breaks an oath for a petitioner simply because it became inconvenient. Instead she exposes what was actually promised, who fulfilled their share, who exploited the bond and whether the vow still has a legitimate object. Her judgement can preserve an alliance—or end it cleanly when loyalty has become abuse.
Regional Effects
- Promises Leave Weight. Within 6 miles, creatures who knowingly break solemn vows feel unusual heaviness while crossing running water.
- The River Holds. Banks, levees and bridges maintained through honest communal labour resist ordinary flood damage unusually well.
- Betrayal Marks the Water. Water used in a deliberately false oath becomes cloudy or metallic-tasting for the oathbreaker only.
- Old Bonds Surface. Forgotten marriage contracts, treaties and kinship obligations are easier to locate in archives and oral memory.
- Endurance Without Collapse. Creatures protecting another through an agreed duty gain the edition-appropriate bonus against Exhaustion and forced movement within 1 mile.
Domain Spells and Divine Gifts
Water, Protection, Law, Community and Strength fit Obá’s clerics. Suitable spells include Sanctuary, Shield of Faith, Warding Bond, Zone of Truth, Protection from Energy, Control Water, Geas, Heroes’ Feast and Mass Heal.
Relics
The River Blade of Obá
A ceremonial blade that cannot be drawn against someone the bearer has sworn to protect.
The Knot of the Last Promise
A cord that tightens whenever one party to a sworn pact deliberately changes the meaning of the agreement after the fact.
