Roman Pantheon · Divine Cult · Campaign Worship · Epic Mechanics

The Penates are Roman household gods of stores, food and continuing sustenance. They protect the material reserve that lets a household endure from one meal to the next and, in their public form, extend that responsibility to the community itself.

Divine Mechanics

These statistics represent an unusually powerful individual Penate; ordinary household spirits can be far weaker.

Penates in Roman Religion

The Penates protect the provisions on which a household depends and, by extension, its continuity. Their place in domestic religion brings them close to Vesta and the Lares, but the roles are not interchangeable: Vesta centres the hearth and sacred fire, Lares are guardians, and Penates concern the stores and sustenance that keep the household alive.

The Penates Publici extend that logic to Rome itself. Roman tradition also connected the Penates with the Trojan story and the transmission of sacred continuity into Italy.

What Are the Penates Doing Right Now?

The Penates are alert wherever survival depends on a finite store: a winter granary, a ship’s water casks, a besieged town, a refugee kitchen or a noble household whose servants know the cellar is inexplicably empty.

Their signs are practical. Flour remains dry through a flood. A poisoned amphora cracks before it is opened. A final loaf feeds one more person than it should.

Worship in the Campaign Present

The Penates remain closest to kitchens, storerooms, granaries, ship provisions and any household reserve on which people depend. Their worship becomes especially urgent during siege, migration, winter shortage or famine.

A portion of a meal, fresh bread, oil or wine may be offered before the household eats. Public Penates receive larger civic rites where a community treats its stored food and inherited continuity as something worthy of divine protection.

Domains, Spells and Divine Gifts

Portfolio domains: Abundance · Community · Protection · Healing. The Penates have access to every domain spell in the matching edition; individual domestic powers may express only part of that portfolio.

Relics

Jar of the Public Penates

A sealed vessel whose contents replenish slowly while they are shared fairly, but vanish if hoarded during genuine need.

Trojan Household Flame

A small lamp said to preserve the memory of every household that has carried it safely from one home to another.

Adventure Hooks

  • A besieged city’s grain never diminishes, and rival factions accuse each other of concealing the miracle.
  • The public Penates stop protecting Rome’s stores after a sacred object is quietly removed.
  • A refugee family carries household gods claimed by two different ancient lineages.
  • Every poisoned jar in a merchant’s warehouse shatters except one.

Divine Estate and Regional Effects

Where Penates’s presence is strong, a major sanctuary can project these effects across roughly six miles. A household or neighbourhood cult manifests them on a much smaller scale. Unless another divine power contests them, they fade over 1d10 days after the sanctuary is abandoned or desecrated.

Food Keeps

Properly stored food and clean water resist ordinary spoilage while they remain part of a household or community reserve.

Poisoned Stores Protest

A deliberately contaminated jar, sack or cask cracks, leaks or changes smell before the contents are served.

Shared Portions Stretch

A meal divided fairly among those present feeds one additional creature for every four portions prepared; hoarded food gains no benefit.

Sources and Rules Note

The Penates are kept distinct from the Lares and are presented through their Roman association with household stores, sustenance and the public Penates. Campaign Divine Tier is separate from Challenge Rating; Pathfinder material is a campaign extension; the 3.5e block represents an unusually powerful Penate rather than every domestic divine presence.
