Flame Linnorm, “The Flame Wyrm”

Flame Linnorm
Create (midjourney.com)

The Flame Linnorm is a magnificent yet terrifying serpentine creature that can reach lengths of up to 40 feet. Its elongated body is covered in shimmering scales that glow like molten metal, shifting in hues from deep crimson to vibrant orange and fiery gold.

The scales are not just for show; they possess a natural resistance to fire, providing protection against the very flames it commands. The Linnorm has a distinct head with sharp, angular features, including elongated, curling horns that resemble charred branches. Its eyes burn with a fierce intensity, resembling molten lava, and its maw is filled with rows of razor-sharp teeth, capable of rending flesh with ease. Trailing behind it is a long, whip-like tail adorned with flickering flame-like appendages that flicker and dance as it moves.

Behavior

Flame Linnorms are known for their cunning and ferocity. They are solitary hunters, often preferring to stake a claim to vast territories, which they defend fiercely. Unlike typical dragons, which may be more territorial, Flame Linnorms are opportunistic predators, waiting patiently for the right moment to strike at their prey. They exhibit a high level of intelligence, using strategic tactics to lure unsuspecting adventurers into traps, such as creating illusions of treasure or false weakness. When threatened, they are not afraid to unleash their breath weapon—a devastating cone of fire that can incinerate anything caught within its path.

Habitat

These fearsome creatures are typically found in volcanic regions, rocky mountains, or desolate plains that have been scorched by fire. They prefer areas with abundant heat sources, such as lava flows or geothermal vents, where they can bask and replenish their strength. Their lairs are often hidden within caverns or caves, filled with treasures gathered from fallen adventurers. The air around their territory is often thick with smoke and the scent of sulfur, a testament to their fiery nature.

Modus Operandi

Flame Linnorms are masters of ambush. They often lie in wait, camouflaged among the rocky terrain or hidden in smoke, before launching surprise attacks on adventurers or unwary travelers. They may also use their breath weapon to create a wall of fire, isolating their prey and forcing them into a disadvantageous position. When engaged in combat, they use their speed and agility to dart in and out of range, striking with their claws and bites while avoiding retaliation. After a successful hunt, they drag their prey back to their lair to consume them at their leisure.

Motivation

The primary motivation of a Flame Linnorm is survival and dominance. They are driven by an insatiable hunger for power and wealth, often hoarding treasures from their victims. They may also be motivated by a desire for revenge against those who dare to encroach upon their territory. Some Flame Linnorms possess a chaotic nature, reveling in destruction and fire for its own sake, while others might be more calculated, using their power to influence local tribes or manipulate events to their advantage. In some legends, they are even seen as guardians of sacred fires or ancient secrets, adding layers to their complex motivations and interactions with adventurers.

Traits

  • Legendary Resistance (3/Day): If the Flame Linnorm fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
  • Fire Affinity: The Flame Linnorm is immune to fire damage and is resistant to cold damage.
  • Terrifying Presence: Each creature of the Linnorm’s choice within 60 feet of it and aware of it must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Actions

  • Multiattack: The Flame Linnorm makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
  • Bite:
    • Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
    • Hit: 30 (4d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 18 (4d8) fire damage.
  • Claw:
    • Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    • Hit: 21 (3d10 + 8) slashing damage.
  • Fiery Breath (Recharge 5-6):
    • The Flame Linnorm exhales fire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Dexterity saving throw, taking 77 (22d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire ignites flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried.

Legendary Actions

The Flame Linnorm can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Flame Linnorm regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Detect: The Flame Linnorm makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
  • Tail Attack: The Flame Linnorm makes a tail attack.
    • Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target.
    • Hit: 25 (3d12 + 8) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 21 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Fiery Roar (Costs 2 Actions): The Flame Linnorm lets out a roar that echoes across the battlefield. Each creature of the Linnorm’s choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be deafened and frightened until the end of their next turn.

Tactics

  • Ambush Predator: The Flame Linnorm prefers to ambush foes from a hidden location, using the environment to its advantage. It may use terrain to obscure its approach, launching a surprise attack with its Fiery Breath to deal massive initial damage to grouped enemies.
  • Zone Control: After using Fiery Breath, the Flame Linnorm may retreat slightly to force enemies to pursue it, creating dangerous terrain filled with flames and debris.
  • Focus Fire: The Linnorm will target spellcasters and ranged attackers first, recognizing their potential to disrupt its plans. It may use its Terrifying Presence to incapacitate weaker foes before engaging with its melee attacks.
  • Legendary Resistance: Use this ability to avoid debilitating effects that could significantly hinder its combat effectiveness, allowing it to maintain pressure on enemies.
  • Retreat: If the battle turns against the Linnorm, it will use its swim speed to escape into nearby lava flows or other environments that offer concealment and safety, potentially returning to launch a surprise attack later.

These terrifying Norse dragons are quite beautiful and quite rare. They live to bend others to their will and to accumulate wealth. As they age they become wreathed in flame

Flame linnorms are often considered the most beautiful and rare of linnorms. These malicious creatures take great joy in bending others to their will, and amassing treasure. Flame linnorms are loners, and lair in caverns deep within the earth, patrolling their territory zealously. They do not hate other linnorms, but isolate themselves to minimize the risk of theft. Flames keep a constant inventory of their wealth, and especially prize their beloved magic items. They have been known to charm or enslave other creatures just to help them acquire more treasure.

A flame linnorm can eat just about anything, from animals, to trees, or even the very earth they walk on. The most palatable food to a flame linnorm is anything on fire, and this creature has been known to set forest fires just to have a quick snack. A flame linnorm only attacks non-intelligent creatures for food.

A flame linnorm can speak Draconic and Abyssal.

COMBAT

A flame linnorm will prefer to attack from above, providing it with a good vantage point and an excellent chance to escape. A flame linnorm will usually attack with spells first, with a focus on defeating its foes without damaging their valuables. It only uses its breath weapons if this tactic fails. The vain flame linnorm prefers not to fight in close combat, as it has no wish to damage its beautiful scales. A flame linnorm’s favorite targets are ships, castles, and bands of adventures as these normally provide it with the best treasure.

Breath Weapon (Su): A flame linnorm has two breath weapons, a 120-foot line of flame and a 60-foot cone of hot ashes. It may use either breath weapon once every 1d4 rounds. Both attacks deal 8d8 points of fire damage, half on a successful Reflex save (DC 39). The save DC is Constitution-based.

Crush (Ex): A flying flame linnorm can land on opponents three or more sizes smaller than itself as a standard action, using its whole body to crush them. A crush attack affects as many creatures as can fit under the flame linnorm’s body. Each creature in the affected area must succeed at a Reflex save (DC 37) or be pinned, automatically taking 4d6+18 points of bludgeoning damage. The save DC is Constitution-based. Thereafter, if the flame linnorm chooses to maintain the pin, treat it as a normal grapple attack. While pinned, the opponent takes crush damage each round.

Spell-Like Abilities: At will – fly;

Caster level 18th. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Spells: A flame linnorm can cast arcane spells as an 18th-level sorcerer (6/8/7/7/7/7/6/6/5/3; save DC 15 + spell level). A flame linnorm typically has access to the following spells:

The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Tail Sweep (Ex): A flame linnorm can sweep with its tail as a standard action. The sweep affects creatures four or more size categories smaller than the linnorm within a 20-foot-radius half-circle centered on the linnorm’s rear. Each affected creature that fails a Reflex save (DC 37 half) takes 2d6+18 points of damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Keen Senses (Ex): A flame linnorm sees four times as well as a human in low-light conditions and twice as well in normal light. It also has Darkvision with a range of 120 feet.
