Befuddlement / Feeblemind

Mage losing access to magical thought under Befuddlement or Feeblemind
A mind can survive the spell while losing access to the knowledge that once made it dangerous.

Modern D&D renamed Feeblemind as Befuddlement and changed the effect substantially. The 2024 spell is a devastating psychic strike that shuts down spellcasting and Magic actions; 2014, PF1e and D&D 3.5e use the older Feeblemind model.

One creature you can see within range makes an Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 10d12 psychic damage and cannot cast spells or take the Magic action.

On a successful save, it takes half damage and suffers no continuing restriction.

At the end of every 30 days, an affected creature repeats the save, ending the continuing effect on a success. Greater Restoration, Heal, or Wish can also end it.

The target takes 4d6 psychic damage and makes an Intelligence saving throw.

On a failed save, its Intelligence and Charisma scores become 1. It cannot cast spells, activate magic items, understand language or communicate intelligibly, though it still recognises allies and can follow or protect them.

Every 30 days it repeats the save, ending the spell on a success. Greater Restoration, Heal or Wish can also end it.

The 3.5e spell follows the same core legacy model as PF1e: Intelligence and Charisma become 1 on a failed save, arcane spellcasters take a −4 save penalty, and the effect persists until exceptional restorative magic ends it.

What Changed?

  • Name: 2024 uses Befuddlement; earlier editions use Feeblemind.
  • 2024: 10d12 psychic damage, half on a successful save, and a continuing block on spellcasting and Magic actions.
  • 2014: 4d6 psychic damage, then Intelligence and Charisma become 1 on a failed save.
  • PF1e / 3.5e: 5th-level Sorcerer/Wizard spell with a Will save and a −4 penalty for arcane spellcasters.

Using the Spell

This is a specialist-disabling spell. The ideal target is often a creature whose danger comes from magical knowledge rather than raw weapon damage.

In 2024, the target may still reason and communicate normally unless another effect says otherwise; the spell shuts down spellcasting and Magic actions rather than reducing ability scores. In 2014 and the legacy d20 versions, the target’s mental capabilities are affected far more broadly.

Recovery magic matters. A victim with allies can become the centre of a rescue, cure or retaliation story rather than simply disappearing from play.
