Transitive Planes
SpiralWorlds Cosmology
Transitive Planes and Great Routes
The roads between realities are realms in their own right: silver thought, ghostly nearness, compressed shadow, living dream, world-root and impossible stair. Each route changes how travellers move, arrive and return.
A traveller stands before six established roads between realities: Astral distance, Ethereal overlap, compressed Shadow, Oneirion, Yggdrasill and the Infinite Staircase.
Passage with consequence
What makes a route transitive?
A transitive plane or great route connects realities, overlaps them, reflects them or creates passage between places that ordinary distance cannot join. SpiralWorlds groups these roads by function while preserving their distinct substance, history and law.
The Astral Plane, Ethereal Plane, Shadow Plane and Oneirion are established transitive planes. Yggdrasill is a living transitive plane and cosmic axis. The Infinite Staircase is a great planar route made of landings, stairs and doors.
The route shapes direction, navigation, arrival pressure, the dangers encountered between worlds and the conditions under which the travellers can return.

Six verified planes and routes
Every card below leads to an established live SpiralWorlds destination page.
Astral Plane
The Silver Expanse of thought, reflection and cosmic relationship. Intention guides movement, passage leaves a wake and sustained ideas can acquire form.
Explore the Astral Plane
Ethereal Plane
A ghostly realm coexistent with the Material world. Physical reality appears muted and insubstantial while Ethereal travellers move unseen beyond ordinary barriers.
Explore the Ethereal Plane
Shadow Plane
A dim, warped reflection of Material geography. Distances contract unevenly, allowing swift passage while making precise navigation and return uncertain.
Explore the Shadow Plane
Oneirion — Plane of Dreams
The hidden sea behind sleep, where memory, prophecy, desire and nightmare become landscape. Distance follows symbolism and travellers need waking anchors.
Explore Oneirion
Yggdrasill — the World Tree
A living plane of roots, trunk, branches, wells and wounds. Passage responds to oath, ancestry, burden, sacrifice and recognised standing.
Explore Yggdrasill
The Infinite Staircase
An endless network of stairs, landings and doors drawn toward places marked by intelligent creativity. Gravity, keys and direction can change from landing to landing.

Planes, axis and staircase
The parent collection is organised by the work each route performs while keeping every cosmological category intact.
Transitive planes
The Astral, Ethereal, Shadow and Dream planes are complete realities with native conditions and inhabitants. Travellers enter the plane itself before using its laws to reach or approach another place.
Great routes
Yggdrasill is a living transitive plane and cosmic axis; the Infinite Staircase is a network of constructed passages. Both connect realities through their own laws and require a discovered, recognised or unlocked passage.
Route comparison
Choose the road whose law fits the expedition
Speed, safety and precision vary from route to route. Each form of passage asks different questions of the travellers and creates a different kind of failure.
| Route | Governing principle | Common use | Primary risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astral Plane | Intention, identity, relationship and passage wakes | Connection and travel between separate realities | Thoughtstorms, identity distortion and damaged cosmic laws |
| Ethereal Plane | Coexistence, proximity and insubstantial passage | Hidden movement, observation and crossing physical barriers | Isolation from physical interaction and unseen inhabitants |
| Shadow Plane | Distorted reflection and compressed distance | Rapid movement between Material locations | Imprecise navigation, hostile gloom and uncertain return |
| Oneirion | Dream, memory, fear, desire and symbolic truth | Dream rescue, prophecy, revelation and memory journeys | False awakening, lost anchors and rewritten identity |
| Yggdrasill | Oath, ancestry, burden, sacrifice and recognition | Sacred world-crossing through roots, trunk and branches | Closed passage, divine attention and consequences for trespass |
| Infinite Staircase | Doors, landings, creative spirit and hidden keys | Unconventional planar access and mystery journeys | Changing gravity, misleading doors and becoming lost |
Expedition discipline
Prepare the crossing before opening it
Planar travel becomes playable when the party understands the road, the arrival conditions and the cost of retreat.
Choose the correct passage
Match the journey to Astral connection, Ethereal proximity, Shadow compression, dream logic, World-Tree recognition or a Staircase door.
Carry proof of purpose
Names, memories, vows, recognised guides, keys and objects tied to home can steady travellers when the route tests identity or direction.
Establish local conditions
Determine gravity, substance, visibility, time, authority and whether the travellers arrive bodily, spiritually, symbolically or through reflection.
Protect the road home
Guard the portal, waking body, tether, guide, door, route mark or return condition. Preserve the passage deliberately after arrival.

World trees, dream gates and unseen roads
The six SpiralWorlds routes do not descend from one historical cosmology. They bring together several distinct traditions and later fantasy structures while preserving the identity of each road.
Yggdrasill draws directly upon Old Norse cosmology, in which the immense sacred tree stands at the centre of the ordered universe and joins divine, mortal and chthonic regions through its roots, trunk and branches. SpiralWorlds develops that image into a living transitive plane whose paths respond to oath, ancestry and recognised standing.
Oneirion uses Hellenic language and imagery surrounding the Oneiroi and the ancient idea that true and deceptive dreams pass through different gates. The campaign expands those poetic and mythological traditions into a traversable realm of memory, prophecy, desire and nightmare.
Astral and Ethereal travel belong chiefly to later Western esoteric and spiritualist vocabularies before modern fantasy role-playing transformed them into distinct mapped environments. The Shadow Plane and Infinite Staircase are principally modern game-cosmology structures: one a colourless, gothic double of the familiar world, the other an impossible network of creative doors and changing gravity.
Cosmological discipline
Connection preserves identity
World trees, dream roads, ghostly borders, shadow reflections and cosmic passages belong to different structures and traditions. SpiralWorlds allows them to meet while preserving each as a distinct road.
The Astral Plane remains a silver realm of thought and relationship. The Ethereal Plane remains a border of ghostly nearness. The Shadow Plane remains a distorted reflection. Oneirion answers to sleep and symbolic truth. Yggdrasill is living, sacred and oath-sensitive. The Infinite Staircase joins landings through doors whose logic belongs to the Staircase itself.
