A traveller crosses from a late-medieval landscape into its pale overlapping reflection within the Ethereal Plane

SpiralWorlds Cosmology · Transitive Plane

Ethereal Plane — The Ghostly Border Between Worlds

The Ethereal Plane is reality standing beside itself: a silver-grey realm of overlap, hidden passage and ghostly nearness where travellers move beyond inert physical barriers while remaining close to the world they left.

Physical reality remains nearby, visible through the mist but separated by planar substance.

Ghostly nearness

The world remains close, but no longer solid

In the Border Ethereal, a traveller occupies a corresponding position beside a neighbouring reality. Buildings, roads, rivers, living creatures and moving armies remain visible through pale mist, while most inert physical substance no longer prevents passage.

Locked doors, stone walls and buried chambers can be crossed without opening them. Material observers usually remain unaware of the traveller. This freedom is accompanied by isolation: ordinary hands cannot lift a Material latch, seize a weapon or drag an endangered companion across the boundary.

Beyond the overlapping border lies the Deep Ethereal. Familiar geography fades into an open expanse of mist crossed by currents, colour curtains, wandering predators, lost refuges and the boundaries of demiplanes. Navigation there depends upon knowledge, anchors and recognised routes rather than terrestrial direction.

Plane Type Transitive Plane
Moral Gravity Neutral
Common Names The Ethereal Plane, Ghost Mist, Veiled Border and Between-Skin
Governing Principle Coexistence, proximity and insubstantial passage
Usual Arrival The Border Ethereal corresponding to the point of entry
Native Medium Cold silver-grey mist, planar currents and dim radiance
Common Uses Observation, infiltration, escape, spirit pursuit and demiplane travel
Primary Risks Isolation, unseen predators, route loss and unsafe return

Core principle

Ethereal travel follows proximity. A traveller first moves beside a place and only later abandons that correspondence for the deeper mist.

Cosmological role

The medium of adjacent realities

The Ethereal Plane allows two realities to occupy corresponding positions without becoming one substance. It preserves the boundary between them while allowing observation, passage and exceptional forms of interaction.

Its two great conditions perform different work. The Border Ethereal clings to a neighbouring reality and preserves local position. The Deep Ethereal releases that local correspondence and opens into currents leading towards other borders and enclosed demiplanes.

Realm or Route Governing Principle Common Use Primary Failure
Astral Plane Intention, identity and relationship Connection between separated realities Thoughtstorms, damaged laws and identity distortion
Ethereal Plane Coexistence and proximity Hidden observation and passage through physical barriers Isolation, predation and unsafe return
Shadow Plane Distorted reflection and compressed distance Rapid movement between Material locations Imprecise navigation and uncertain arrival
Oneirion Dream, memory, fear and symbolic truth Dream passage, prophecy and memory journeys False awakening and loss of the waking anchor

Spirits and the roads beyond death

Ghosts may remain in the Border Ethereal beside a person, object, body or place that anchors them. Other spirits cross its mist while seeking judgement, reincarnation, ancestral country or a divine realm. A haunting therefore marks delay, attachment, pursuit or unfinished obligation.

The near mist

The Border Ethereal

The Border Ethereal overlaps a neighbouring reality. Each position within the border corresponds to a nearby physical position, allowing travellers to navigate by observing the muted landscape around them.

01 · Correspondence

Place remains recognisable

Rooms, roads, hills and rivers retain their relative positions. Movement through the border normally covers the same distance as movement beside the adjoining world.

02 · Insubstantial passage

Inert matter loses authority

Ordinary walls, doors, floors and earth cannot stop a fully Ethereal traveller. Living beings, magical force, dimensional seals and specialised planar wards can remain obstacles.

03 · Muted perception

The nearby world appears veiled

Colour weakens, edges soften and distant detail disappears into mist. Exact sensory limits depend upon the magic, creature ability or game system governing the crossing.

04 · Concealment

Ordinary senses look past the traveller

Material creatures usually cannot perceive an Ethereal presence. Truesight, planar senses, divination and creatures able to shift between planes can expose it.

05 · Ethereal pressure

Powerful places mark the border

Tombs, plague pits, portals, sacred thresholds, mass graves and repeated hauntings impress patterns upon the surrounding mist.

06 · Return

Position matters at manifestation

A traveller returning within solid matter is forced towards open space. Violent crossings, active wards and collapsing portals can scatter or injure a group.

Border discipline

Before returning, identify open space, examine the local wards and confirm that the corresponding structure has not changed since entry.

Beyond correspondence

The Deep Ethereal

Late-medieval planar travellers follow a luminous current through the silver mist of the Deep Ethereal towards a distant colour curtain and demiplane shore
Travellers follow a luminous current through the Deep Ethereal towards a colour curtain, while an abandoned refuge stands upon a drifting fragment of planar stone.

The Deep Ethereal begins where the influence of a particular border fades. Physical landmarks become immense pale silhouettes and then disappear. The traveller enters open mist without a dependable horizon, compass or universal ground.

Routes persist as currents, repeated crossings and relationships between boundaries. Some remain stable for centuries. Others move after an ether cyclone, the collapse of a demiplane, a magical war or the death of the power that maintained them.

The Near Veil

The fading edge of a border

The adjoining world remains barely visible. Expeditions establish return marks here before committing themselves to deeper travel.

Mist Confluences

Junctions of several currents

Confluences become meeting places, hunting grounds, trading stations and strategic points controlled by guides or planar powers.

Colour Curtains

Boundaries visible as radiance

Curtains appear as rippling light, storms, rain, smoke or walls of impossible colour. Passing through one reaches another Ethereal border.

Demiplane Shores

The edges of enclosed realities

A demiplane may present a doorway, forest edge, island, tower, weather front or distant city reflected upon the mist.

Ghost Roads

Paths worn by repeated passage

Spirits moving towards a shared destination can create temporary roads marked by footsteps, voices, funeral objects and remembered light.

Ether Cyclones

Storms of violent displacement

Cyclones twist established currents, extend journeys, reveal hidden shores and cast travellers towards unintended borders.

Ethereal Refuges

Strongholds beside stable routes

Explorers build observatories, monasteries, prisons, markets and waystations around reliable boundaries or enduring fragments of solid substance.

Grave Mists

Weather formed by unresolved death

Large concentrations of displaced spirits can spread into the deep mist as cold regions filled with memories, repeated journeys and unfinished voices.

Life and unlife in the mist

Inhabitants and travellers

The plane appears empty to visitors who spend all their attention watching the adjoining world. Ethereal predators, spirits and experienced travellers can see the expedition directly.

Bound Spirits

Ghosts and unfinished dead

Ghosts commonly remain beside the people, bodies, possessions or places anchoring them. Their ability to manifest or communicate varies with the nature of the haunting.

Phase Predators

Spiders and border hunters

Phase-shifting creatures wait beside prey, attack through a sudden crossing and withdraw before Material defenders can retaliate.

Raiders

Xill and other abductors

Raiders observe settlements from the border, select isolated victims and withdraw through routes prepared before the attack.

Spirit Hunters

Night hags and soul traders

Some hunters follow nightmares, dying souls and roads used by the dead. They approach sleeping victims without entering the guarded Material room.

Planar Thieves

Ethereal Filchers

Ethereal filchers are Material Plane aberrations able to shift rapidly across the boundary. They use the Border Ethereal to approach valuable objects, escape pursuit and return to hidden underground lairs.

Planar Peoples

Guides, settlers and route-keepers

Stable routes support scouts, traders, scholars, exiles and communities maintaining refuges beyond the control of Material rulers.

Give every Ethereal encounter a motive

A creature may defend a route, recover a stolen anchor, follow the wake of a crossing, guard a ghost road or prevent travellers from opening a dangerous demiplane shore.

The playable present

The Ethereal Plane in 1454

During the Age of Severed Crowns , knowledge of the Ethereal Plane is fragmented among court magicians, temple guardians, grave custodians, occult fraternities, spies, monster hunters and hereditary families responsible for particular crossings.

The Black Death has left many places where the Border Ethereal is crowded with unresolved movement. Rare Red Death outbreaks create more violent disturbances: corpses rise on the Material side while frightened or divided spirits gather beside plague houses, burial grounds and abandoned roads.

War also alters the border. Sieges, massacres, destroyed dynasties and the seizure of sacred buildings leave overlapping claims that survive as Ethereal boundaries. A conquered fortress may contain the living garrison, the ghosts of its former defenders and a planar ward that still recognises a dead ruler.

Court espionage

Rulers employ rare Ethereal scouts to inspect sealed rooms, watch negotiations and identify concealed passages.

Grave custody

Communities protect burial grounds against necromancers, spirit hunters and crossings opened by mass death.

Planar smuggling

Contraband, relics and fugitives pass through borders that city walls, toll gates and blockades cannot control.

Monster hunting

Phase predators and abductors force investigators to pursue enemies through spaces invisible to ordinary witnesses.

Lost roads

Older portals still lead towards refuges, archives and demiplanes established by vanished kingdoms.

Contested thresholds

Temple gates, royal tombs and ancestral halls may recognise claims that present Material authorities have rejected.

Crossing the boundary

Entering, navigating and returning

01 · Entry

Open a controlled crossing

Spells, innate phase movement, portals, haunted thresholds, cursed objects and planar instruments can open the way.

02 · Record

Mark the point of arrival

Record local landmarks, the crossing’s appearance, active wards and the open spaces available for return.

03 · Anchor

Carry a connection to the route

A tuned rod, route seal, destination object, ghost token or planar chart can prevent drift in the Deep Ethereal.

04 · Watch

Guard the Ethereal side

An observer focused only upon the Material world may overlook the creature already following through the mist.

05 · Navigate

Follow verified currents

Deep travel depends upon recognised confluences, colour curtains, stable guides and destinations strong enough to leave a signature.

06 · Return

Manifest in open space

Confirm the corresponding location, examine the local wards and return the expedition together whenever possible.

Common hazards

Hazard Warning Consequence Response
Unsafe return The corresponding space is occupied or warded Displacement, injury or separation Prepare several open return points
Border predator Mist parts without wind or Material animals react to empty space Ambush from an unseen attacker Assign an Ethereal watch
Ether cyclone Currents rotate and distant lights stretch Delay, route loss or forced arrival Secure the group and protect the route anchor
False curtain The boundary changes when viewed indirectly Arrival within a trap or hostile shore Test the curtain before crossing
Ghost attachment A spirit repeats the group’s path or imitates one traveller Possession or a haunting carried home Identify the spirit and its anchor
Current drift Known landmarks appear in the wrong order Extended travel or unintended destination Return to the last verified confluence

The descriptive entry remains system-neutral. Use the tab matching the campaign, then apply any more specific spell, creature ability or planar effect governing the crossing.

D&D 2024 / 5.5E plane profile

  • Plane Type: Transitive Plane.
  • Border Visibility: Usually limited to 60 feet within the Border Ethereal.
  • Deep Visibility: Usually limited to 30 feet within the Deep Ethereal.
  • Overlapping View: A traveller in the Border Ethereal can normally see 30 feet into the adjoining plane.
  • Common Access: Etherealness, Plane Shift, Gate and magical portals.
  • Deep Travel: A journey between two Ethereal curtains takes 1d10 × 10 hours.

Planes bordering the Ethereal

The Border Ethereal overlaps the Material Plane, the Feywild, the Shadowfell and the Inner Planes. Each location upon those planes has a corresponding location within the Border Ethereal.

The Outer Planes do not possess corresponding Ethereal borders. Travel to an Outer Plane normally uses the Astral Plane, a portal, a gate or another direct planar effect.

Border Ethereal visibility

Visibility within the Border Ethereal is usually limited to 60 feet. The overlapping plane appears greyish and indistinct, with blurred colours and softened edges.

A traveller can normally see only 30 feet into the overlapping plane. The Ethereal Plane remains imperceptible to creatures upon that plane unless magic, truesight or another feature reveals it.

Interaction across the boundary

Creatures in the Border Ethereal cannot normally attack creatures upon the overlapping plane, and creatures upon that plane cannot normally attack Ethereal creatures.

An Ethereal traveller is ordinarily imperceptible and silent to someone upon the overlapping plane. Specific spells, magical effects and creature traits can create exceptions.

Movement through the border

Solid objects upon the overlapping plane do not normally hamper an Ethereal creature. A traveller can move through walls, doors, floors, ceilings, earth and unattended objects.

Living beings and certain magical effects remain obstacles. Anything formed from magical force can block Ethereal movement when the effect extends into the plane.

Entering the Border Ethereal

The Etherealness spell places its targets within the Border Ethereal corresponding to their current plane. The spell governs the targets’ movement, duration, perception and return.

Plane Shift can transport travellers to either the Border Ethereal or the Deep Ethereal. Unless the destination is a known location or established teleportation circle, arrival can occur anywhere within the chosen region.

The Deep Ethereal

The Deep Ethereal is a region of roiling mist beyond the borders overlapping other planes. Visibility there is usually limited to 30 feet.

Reaching it normally requires Plane Shift, Gate or a magical portal. The Etherealness spell alone places travellers within the Border Ethereal.

Ethereal curtains

Curtains of coloured vapour are scattered throughout the Deep Ethereal. Passing through one carries a traveller into the Border Ethereal connected to a particular plane.

d12 Destination Border Curtain Colour
1–2 Material Plane Turquoise
3 Shadowfell Dusky grey
4 Feywild Opalescent
5 Elemental Plane of Air Pale blue
6 Elemental Plane of Earth Chestnut
7 Elemental Plane of Fire Orange
8 Elemental Plane of Water Green
9 Para-elemental Plane of Ash Dark grey
10 Para-elemental Plane of Ice Aquamarine
11 Para-elemental Plane of Magma Maroon
12 Para-elemental Plane of Ooze Chocolate brown

A curtain’s texture and temperature also reflect the nature of the plane concealed beyond it.

Deep Ethereal travel

Physical distance has little practical meaning in the Deep Ethereal. Travellers feel themselves moving by will but cannot reliably measure their speed or determine the distance crossed.

A journey from one Ethereal curtain to another takes 1d10 × 10 hours, regardless of the planes connected by the curtains.

During combat and other round-by-round situations, creatures use their normal movement speeds.

Ether cyclone warning

An ether cyclone is a serpentine column that tears through the Deep Ethereal, distorting and uprooting Ethereal forms in its path.

A traveller with a Passive Perception of 15 or higher receives 1d4 rounds of warning as a deep vibration or hum spreads through the surrounding mist.

Travellers unable to reach a curtain, portal or other refuge before the cyclone arrives roll once on the Ether Cyclone table.

Ether cyclone

d20 Effect
1–12 Extended journey. Each traveller makes a DC 15 Charisma saving throw. If at least half the group succeeds, the journey is delayed by 1d10 hours. Otherwise, the remaining travel time is doubled.
13–19 Random border. The cyclone carries the group into the Border Ethereal associated with a randomly determined plane. Roll on the Ethereal Curtains table.
20 Astral displacement. The cyclone tears open a planar breach and hurls the travellers to a random destination upon the Astral Plane.

Using the plane in play

  • Use the Border Ethereal for scouting, infiltration, bypassing inert physical barriers and observing nearby locations.
  • Use the Deep Ethereal for travel between the Material Plane, its echoes and the Inner or Para-elemental Planes.
  • Treat living beings, magical force, Ethereal inhabitants and uncertain return routes as the principal obstacles.
  • Keep the 60-foot Border visibility, 30-foot Deep visibility and 30-foot overlapping view active so that Ethereal scouting never becomes perfect reconnaissance.

This tab summarises the Ethereal Plane mechanics presented in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. Individual spells, monsters and magical effects can impose additional or different restrictions.

Established planar traits

Trait Rule
Gravity No gravity
Morphic Quality Alterable morphic, although the plane contains little ordinary substance to alter
Alignment Mildly neutral-aligned
Magic Normal magic, subject to the restrictions governing effects crossing the Material–Ethereal boundary

Cross-boundary interaction

Creatures on the Ethereal and Material Planes cannot normally attack one another. An Ethereal traveller is invisible, insubstantial and silent to a Material observer.

Force and abjuration effects

Force effects and abjurations capable of affecting Ethereal creatures can cross from the Material Plane when the caster can detect and target the Ethereal creature.

Magical attacks do not normally cross from the Ethereal Plane into the Material Plane, including Force attacks.

Movement and manifestation

Ethereal creatures move through Material creatures and objects without physical obstruction. Ethereal barriers, Force effects and dimensional wards remain effective when their rules state that they do.

Use the relevant spell, supernatural ability or planar travel effect to resolve duration, rematerialisation and damage caused by returning within solid matter.

This tab preserves the Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5 planar-trait model used by the legacy entry.

SpiralWorlds optional procedures

The following rules supplement the published D&D and Pathfinder mechanics rather than replacing them.

Finding a Deep Ethereal route

A character already in the Border Ethereal can search for a thinning point leading into a known Deep Ethereal route. The attempt requires a planar guide, attuned instrument, established crossing or successful planar navigation check.

This procedure does not allow ordinary Border Ethereal travel to reach the Deep Ethereal automatically. The Games Master determines whether a usable thinning point exists.

Deep Ethereal navigation

When a route is uncertain, use Intelligence (Arcana), Wisdom (Survival), Knowledge (planes) or the nearest equivalent.

Difficulty Route
Routine A recently travelled current with a reliable guide or functioning anchor
Moderate A known shore, concealed curtain or partially disrupted route
Hard A moving destination, cyclone region or border protected against discovery
Extreme A lost prison, erased route or demiplane whose creator no longer exists

Consequences of failure

  1. The journey takes substantially longer than expected.
  2. The group leaves a wake that can be followed.
  3. A creature or important object becomes separated.
  4. The expedition reaches a related but unintended border.
  5. A local inhabitant intercepts the travellers.
  6. The route anchor is damaged and cannot guide the return journey.

Tracking a crossing

A recent passage disturbs the mist. A successful planar knowledge, perception or tracking check can reveal its direction, approximate numbers and whether the crossing was calm, hurried or violent.

Safe rest

A secure rest in open mist requires a concealed wake, defended refuge or control of the nearby current. The absence of Material observers does not protect the expedition from Ethereal inhabitants.

Campaign use

Running Ethereal adventures

The plane works best when passing through a wall solves the first obstacle and reveals a second. The travellers may enter the sealed chamber, but they still face the guardian living within the border, the conversation they cannot fully interpret and the ward surrounding their return point.

Infiltration

The sealed chamber

The party bypasses the doors and discovers an Ethereal guardian occupying the room.

Investigation

The silent witness

A ghost saw a murder but can communicate only through movements repeated in the physical room.

Rescue

The failed return

One member of an expedition remains in the mist after the spell bringing the others home ends.

Pursuit

The phase hunter

A predator attacks isolated victims and retreats to a nest hidden within apparently solid ground.

Exploration

The moving shore

A demiplane containing a lost archive appears at a different confluence after every cyclone.

Warfare

The unseen siege

Material defenders hold the walls while Ethereal raiders fight for the wards and manifestation points.

Quick answers

Ethereal Plane questions

What is the Border Ethereal?

It is the part of the Ethereal Plane overlapping a neighbouring reality. A traveller retains a corresponding position beside that world while moving beyond most inert physical barriers.

What is the Deep Ethereal?

It is the open mist beyond local correspondence, containing currents, colour curtains, refuges and the boundaries of demiplanes.

Can Ethereal creatures attack Material creatures?

Ordinary attacks do not cross the boundary. Specific spells, abilities, wards and creature traits may create exceptions.

What blocks an Ethereal traveller?

Most inert physical matter does not obstruct Ethereal movement. Living beings, magical force, dimensional wards and effects that extend into the Ethereal Plane can remain solid or dangerous.

Why do ghosts appear in the Ethereal Plane?

A ghost may remain beside the person, body, possession or place anchoring it. Other spirits use roads through the mist towards ancestral, divine or judicial destinations.

Historical and cultural context

Aether, spirit communication and unseen presence

The name draws upon older ideas of aether as celestial or subtle substance. Ancient, medieval and later esoteric traditions developed different accounts of spirit, breath, invisible matter and worlds beyond ordinary perception.

Nineteenth-century mesmerism and spiritualism popularised séances, table turning, trance mediumship, spirit writing and attempts to investigate communication with the dead. Stage phantasmagoria and magic-lantern projection also gave audiences vivid images of apparitions occupying ordinary rooms.

Fantasy role-playing transformed these separate influences into a navigable cosmological environment used for ghostly movement, hidden observation, passage through barriers and access to demiplanes. SpiralWorlds preserves that practical structure while giving the Astral, Ethereal, Shadow and Dream planes distinct governing principles.
