The Age of Giants

Dinosaurs inherit a world emptied of many rivals. Sauropods turn landscapes into feeding grounds measured in miles, great theropods hunt beneath conifer canopies, pterosaurs cross widening seas, and marine reptiles make the oceans as monstrous as the land. Beneath that visible age, older powers endure while extraterrestrial powers expand their designs upon Earth.
The world after the Triassic extinction
The Jurassic does not begin with the first giant animal, or even with the first giant dinosaur. Its importance lies in what happens after the end-Triassic extinction: dinosaurs survive a planetary crisis that removes many of their competitors, then spread through the ecological space left behind.
Long-necked herbivores become larger and more numerous. Predatory theropods diversify beside them. Armoured dinosaurs defend the forest floor. Pterosaurs remain the great visible vertebrates of the air, while ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pliosaurs and marine crocodyliforms fill Jurassic seas with predators every bit as formidable as those on land.
The planet itself is changing beneath them. Pangaea continues to break apart. Rift systems widen, the Atlantic begins to open, Laurasia and Gondwana grow more distinct, and multiplying coastlines, islands, wetlands and shallow seas divide populations that once shared broad continental ranges.
Rise of the Giants
Recovery, expansion and the beginning of enduring dinosaurian supremacy.
The opening Jurassic is a survivor’s world becoming an empire. Many large reptilian competitors have disappeared in the Triassic–Jurassic extinction, and dinosaurs expand into habitats that had been fiercely contested only a few million years earlier.
Predators beneath the new forests
Dilophosaurus is among the most imposing Early Jurassic hunters represented in the SpiralWorlds Bestiary. Crested and powerfully built, it stalks river margins and open woodland where smaller animals must cross exposed ground.
The herbivore world is changing just as strongly. Long-necked sauropodomorphs and early sauropods move through broad feeding territories. Scelidosaurus carries rows of protective bony armour, while smaller ornithischians occupy undergrowth, woodland margins and open ground. The dinosaur world is becoming a system of giants, armour, speed and predation rather than a single dominant body plan.
Monsters in the water
Offshore, the transformation is just as dramatic. Temnodontosaurus, a huge ichthyosaur with enormous eyes and a long tooth-lined snout, hunts fish, cephalopods and ammonites. Plesiosaurus and related long-necked marine reptiles patrol coastlines and shallow seas.
Above the cliffs and forest margins, Dimorphodon and other early pterosaurs already possess the skies. These are not the enormous aerial giants of much later periods, but smaller cliff nesters, fish takers and opportunistic hunters moving through a world that still lacks birds in anything like their later diversity.
The recovering world overheats
The Early Jurassic is not a simple march towards abundance. Around 183 million years ago, major disruption of the carbon cycle and intense greenhouse warming transform climate and ocean chemistry. Oxygen-poor waters spread through large marine regions, ecosystems suffer severe losses, and changing weathering and sea level reshape environments across the planet.
The giants survive, but deep time repeats one of its oldest lessons: dominance is never the same thing as safety.
The Earth begins to open
Pangaea still covers an immense part of the globe, but its fractures widen. Volcanic provinces, subsiding basins and new coastlines accompany the early opening of the Atlantic. Each new marine corridor or isolated basin creates another opportunity for populations to diverge.
Below this changing natural world, older histories continue. The collapse of elder surface kingdoms in earlier ages did not erase their inhabitants. Sealed chambers, subterranean sanctuaries and surviving populations persist while dinosaurs inherit the sunlight.
Creatures of the Early Jurassic
The Reptilian Renaissance
Sauropod kingdoms, armoured herbivores, formidable theropods and monster-rich seas.
By the Middle Jurassic, recovery is no longer the defining story. Great herbivores move through mature ecosystems, predators occupy increasingly specialised niches, and the continuing breakup of Pangaea produces spreading seas, island chains and separated terrestrial basins.
The giant roads
Sauropods spread across several continental regions and reach sizes that make their movement an ecological force in its own right. Herd routes cross valleys and open woodland. Vegetation is stripped at different heights by animals of different builds, while trampled corridors become paths for smaller animals and the predators following them.
Among the more distinctive herbivores, Shunosaurus carries a defensive tail club, while Huayangosaurus represents an early branch of the plated stegosaurs. Armour is becoming as characteristic of Jurassic herbivore life as extreme size.
Hunters of land and coast
Megalosaurus gives the Middle Jurassic one of its defining large predators: a powerful bipedal hunter capable of attacking substantial prey. Eustreptospondylus occupies coastal and island environments, while Gasosaurus represents another branch of the increasingly varied predatory world.
The sea has an apex monster
In some Middle Jurassic seas, Liopleurodon and related pliosaurs combine enormous skulls, short powerful necks and four strong paddles into predatory forms capable of explosive attacks. Long-necked plesiosaurs exploit different parts of the same food webs, ichthyosaurs remain fast open-water hunters, and ammonites flourish beneath them.
The coastline therefore offers no simple refuge from the giants. An animal escaping a theropod on land can enter water patrolled by predators every bit as dangerous.
Old wilderness, ancient crossings
Fey peoples and realms are already ancient. The Jurassic does not create them. Instead, the immense forests, springs, ravines and wild waters of this age strengthen old relationships between Earth and territories beyond it.
Crossings that had weakened or closed begin to open again. Ancient courts regain access to parts of the terrestrial wilderness, and places separated for ages become connected once more.
This is a resurgence, not the birth of one worldwide fey civilisation. Different forests, valleys, waters and crossings answer to different courts, peoples and traditions, while immense regions remain wholly outside fey rule. Their magic exists alongside the genuine plants, animals, climates and ecosystems of Jurassic Earth rather than replacing them.
Creatures of the Middle Jurassic
The Apex of the Giants
The classic Jurassic monster worlds reach their greatest splendour.
The Late Jurassic is the world many later imaginations picture when they think of the dinosaur age. North America, Africa, Europe and Asia contain different ecosystems and different inhabitants, but a recurring pattern has become unmistakable: enormous herbivores, heavily defended plant-eaters, formidable hunters and skies filled with pterosaurs.
Living horizons
Diplodocus crosses open feeding country with a body stretched to extraordinary length. Mamenchisaurus carries one of the most extreme long-necked body plans of the age. Other giant sauropods, including Brachiosaurus- and Camarasaurus-type animals, divide vegetation by height, season and habitat.
These animals do more than inhabit a landscape. Repeated feeding opens woodland. Herd movement crushes vegetation and compacts soil. Dung returns nutrients to the ground. Carcasses become temporary ecosystems. A migrating sauropod herd is geography in motion.
The sovereign hunters
Allosaurus is one of the defining predators of the age, hunting in ecosystems crowded with sauropods and stegosaurs. Ceratosaurus follows a different predatory build, while Torvosaurus adds another massive hunter to the same broad world.
There is no simple ladder ending in one unbeatable apex animal. Jurassic predator guilds overlap. Different hunters favour different prey and terrain, and several species may compete over the same kill. A wounded giant can attract carnivores from miles of river valley.
Armour answers teeth
Stegosaurus is one of the great defensive animals of the Late Jurassic, carrying tall plates and a heavily armed tail into feeding grounds shared with large theropods. Kentrosaurus answers the same evolutionary pressures with an even more visibly spiked profile.
The sky changes quietly
Rhamphorhynchus and Pterodactylus cross Jurassic shorelines and islands. Pterosaurs remain successful masters of the air, but another lineage is now impossible to ignore.
Archaeopteryx, living roughly 149–145 million years ago, is one of the most celebrated expressions of the dinosaur-to-bird transition. It is not a convenient halfway rung between two fixed categories, but part of a wider feathered theropod radiation in which avian and non-avian features appear in combinations that resist simple labels.
Small mammals continue their quieter expansion beneath the giants, occupying nocturnal, arboreal, burrowing and insect-eating niches. The Jurassic belongs visually to dinosaurs, but some of the lineages that will flourish after the end-Cretaceous catastrophe already live in their shadow.
Creatures of the Late Jurassic
The giants do not vanish at the boundary
The end of the Jurassic is not a mass-extinction curtain. Dinosaur dynasties continue into the Cretaceous, continental fragmentation continues, and regional ecosystems become increasingly distinct. Feathered theropods keep diversifying along evolutionary paths that will produce the extraordinary radiation of birds.

Sauropods, theropods, armoured dinosaurs and many smaller lineages cross the boundary and continue evolving within the changing Cretaceous world.
Bird-line dinosaurs
Feathered theropods carry dinosaurian inheritance into increasingly specialised aerial forms. The emergence of birds does not end dinosaur history; birds are one surviving branch of it.
Mammalian persistence
Mammals remain small beside the dominant reptiles, but continue expanding through niches that reward nocturnal life, climbing, burrowing and dietary flexibility.
Buried inheritances
Mi-Go workings, abandoned Elder Thing installations, surviving deep Elder Thing settlements, serpent sanctuaries, sealed Yuggothian sites and fey-anchored wild places can outlast geological change as functioning enclaves, buried complexes, relics or supernatural territories.
The next age will not replace the dinosaurs. It will transform the world around them. New plant communities, changing relationships with insects, rising seas and increasingly separated continents will create the conditions for the final great dinosaur worlds.
The Jurassic is still beneath the campaign world
More than a hundred million years later, the Age of Giants can return as creature, place, object or claim. A Jurassic adventure does not have to become a tour of prehistoric exhibits. The useful question is what survived—and who wants it now.
Primeval refuges
Hidden valleys, deep caverns, isolated islands and other protected environments can preserve lineages long after they disappear from the ordinary surface world.
Alien extraction sites
A Mi-Go mine buried beneath later mountain-building may contain impossible alloys, biological archives, preserved specimens or machinery never designed for human hands.
Ruins below ruins
A medieval fortress may stand above Roman stone, Bronze Age foundations and Neolithic ritual ground—and beneath all of them an Elder Thing complex, serpent sanctuary or Mi-Go installation millions or billions of years older.
Some of those places are genuinely ruins. Others were merely sealed, abandoned from the surface or left waiting.
Monsters without a human past
A surviving Jurassic animal requires no forgotten wizard, divine curse or ancient legend to explain it. Sometimes its greatest horror is precisely that it is natural: an animal from a vanished ecosystem that has no interest in human history at all.

The world keeps changing
The dinosaurs leave the Jurassic still dominant. Ahead lies a more fragmented planet, changing plant communities and the final great expansion of dinosaur diversity before the catastrophe at the end of the Cretaceous.
