Venom (Mac Gargan)

Venom is a moniker of several characters in the Marvel Comics’ fictional Marvel Universe. It was first used by the character Eddie Brock in The Amazing Spider-Man #299 (April 1988). It is now used by Mac Gargan. Although “Venom” is usually the result of symbiosis between an extraterrestrial symbiote and a human host, the names “Venom” and “Venom symbiote” have also been used to in reference to the alien symbiote alone.

Alternate Form

The Venom symbiote can change the appearance of the face and clothing
of it’s host as per the change self spell. It cannot change their general build. This provides the wearer with a +10 bonus on Disguise checks. It is also able to blend into it’s surroundings like a chameleon, providing a +10 bonus on Hide checks and in any sort of environment, Venom can use the Hide skill even while being observed.

Spider-Sense Immunity

Venom cannot be detected by Spider-Man’s early warning danger sense.
In any combat with Venom, Spider-Man loses all bonuses it provides (thoughhe does not suffer penalties as if it had been removed).

Superhuman Reflexes

Gargan’s already superhuman agility was amplified even further by
bonding with the symbiote. He is far faster then a normal human and even many metahumans:

  • Gargan is considered to have accelerated actions 1.
  • If Gargan is the subject of any attack that allows a Reflex save for half damage, and is successful, he suffers no damage. If he fails his save, he takes half damage.
  • +8 bonus on all Dexterity-based skills (and Jump)
  • +5 bonus on all Reflex saves.
  • +5 initiative bonus.

Superhuman Strength

Before bonding with the Venom symbiote, Gargan possessed a Strength score of 38 and could lift 7 times his Strength score. After his merging with the  symbiote, his Strength has increased, as indicated above, and he is able to lift 8 times his Strength score. Gargan is considered one size category larger for the purpose of his unarmed attacks and all other size considerations.

He deals lethal damage in combat.

Symbiotic Senses

The Venom symbiote provides Gargan with a host of perceptions beyond any he formerly possessed:

  • Gargan is considered to have 360 degree vision and cannot be caught by surprised, nor caught flat-footed.
  • He is never considered flanked.
  • Full defense bonus due to early warning from the symbiote.
  • The symbiote can protect Gargan’s eyes instantly, making him immune to attempts to blind him.
  • The symbiote allows Gargan to make up to 14 attacks of opportunity per round.
  • +10 insight bonus on all Listen, Search, Sense Motive, and Spot checks.

Symbiote Bond

Gargan is bonded with the Venom symbiote. This makes them particularly difficult to affect mentally and physically. They receive a +4 bonus on all Fortitude and Will saves. Their natural attacks are considered chaotic and evil. Though Gargan is not chaotic, he is affected by any attack that targets a chaotic enemy, due to the symbiote’s alignment.

Wall Crawling

Venom is able to cling to walls with ease, as with Spider Climb, though he is not required to use all four limbs. He receives a +12 bonus on all Climb checks.

Gargan can Climb walls using his talon-like fingers even without the symbiote. He naturally receives a +6 bonus on all Climb checks and has a Climb speed of 20 ft.

Webbing

Venom is able to replicate the webbing of Spider-Man. Venom can shoot a webline a distance of up to 250 feet. This line requires a Strength check of DC 30 to break up to one round after being fired. After that time, it requires a Strength check of DC 45 to break.

Drawbacks

Venom is highly vulnerable to fire and sonic attacks. Any assault by these methods inflicts 50% additional damage to Venom.

Venom is also disoriented by extreme noise. In area of high volume Venom takes a -2 penalty to attacks, saving throws, and armor class.
