A lion-like creature stands in front of the gate of a temple devoted to a deity. This creature appears to be a mixture of both a dog and a lion. It is golden and radiates with celestial power. A fierce expression appears on its wide face.

Shi-shi stand guard at the entrances of temples devoted to the Celestial Bureaucracy and Shinto deities. They are fierce celestial creatures, which serve to protect sacred temple from evil. Shi-shi protect these temples by using protective spells. They are generally presented in pairs, with the female on the left and the male on the right. The male lion has his right paw on a ball. The female is essentially identical, but has a single cub under her left paw. Symbolically, the female fu dog protects those dwelling inside, while the male guards the structure. Sometimes one has their mouth closed, while the other has theirs open. The one with their mouth open is inhaling, which represents life. The other with their mouth closed is exhaling, which represents death.

Shi-shi stand 5 ft. tall at the shoulder and are 5 ft. long. They weigh 600 pounds. and can speak Celestial, Common, and Dragon languages, though they usually communicate telepathically.

Combat

Shi-shi is as much a fighter as they are protectors. They always start off the battle by making sure their allies are protected. Then, they unleash their roar upon its foes before charging in to attack in melee. It uses its breath weapons when either their allies need help or when they are outnumbered.

Breath Weapons (Su): A shi-shi can bring forth life or death from its mouth once every minute.

  • Death –A shi-shi can unleash energy from its mouth which can harms its foes, specifically evil creatures. It is a 60 ft. cone and it deals 8d4 divine damage. Reflex save DC 21 halves damage. DC is Constitution-based.
  • Life –A shi-shi can unleash positive energy from its mouth which can only heal. It is a 60 ft. cone and it heals 8d4 points of damage to all non-evil creatures in range. Evil creatures within range suffer no ill effects for being within range.

Improved Grab (Ex): If a shi-shi strikes a foe with its bite, it can attempt a grapple check. If successful it can rake. If a shi-shi strikes a Medium or smaller foe with its bite, it can attempt a grapple check. If successful it can take them down.

Pounce (Ex): If a shi-shi charges, it can make a full attack, including 2 rake attacks, in the same round.

Rake (Ex): Attack bonus +17 melee, damage 1d8 + 8.

Roar (Ex): A shi-shi can let loose a terrifying roar every 1d4 rounds as a standard action. Every non-good creature within 150 ft. of the roaring shi-shi must succeed a Will save DC 19 or cower in fear for 1d4 rounds. Those within 50 ft. who fail their saves are instead frightened for 1d4 + 2 rounds.

Takedown (Ex): After a shi-shi takes down a foe, they are considered pinned and the shi-shi can rake them each round that it maintains a hold.

Smite Evil (Su): A shi-shi can smite evil 3 times a day. It adds a +4 bonus to attacks and a +10 bonus to damage.
