How to Use Resistance

Cast before the danger

This is preparation magic. It works best when the threat is known before someone steps into it, touches it or comes under attack.

Protect the exposed creature

Give it to the scout opening the sealed door, the warrior holding a hazardous passage, the rescuer entering smoke or cold, or the specialist handling a dangerous object.

Read the exact protection

The name is broad but the rules are precise. Do not infer immunity or universal defence from the spell’s name; resolve only the protection stated in the rules entry.

Check overlaps

Protective effects can interact with concentration, bonus types and stacking rules. Apply those rules normally when another defence is already affecting the target.

Resistance in the Campaign

This abjuration is practical protection for people who knowingly work close to danger. It belongs in workshops, mines, gatehouses, sickrooms and expedition camps as naturally as it does in an adventurer’s spellbook.

Hazardous trades

Alchemists, dyers, glassworkers, smiths, miners and siege engineers face heat, fumes, corrosives, debris and violent accidents. Brief protective magic has obvious value.

Scouts and delvers

Experienced parties use this abjuration before opening suspicious doors, disturbing sealed containers or entering chambers where the danger is partly understood.

Bodyguards and attendants

A household caster may protect the person who must inspect a suspicious gift, approach an uncertain visitor or enter a room after a magical attack.

Abjurers and wardens

To an abjurer, this cantrip is a basic lesson in defining a threat precisely rather than promising universal safety.

Historical & Mythic Context

Amulets, Protective Signs and Sacred Defences

Protection could be worn

An Egyptian sa amulet in the Metropolitan Museum uses the hieroglyph meaning “protection,” turning the written sign itself into a protective object for its wearer.

Metropolitan Museum of Art — Sa Amulet

Knots could bind protection

The Egyptian tit amulet took the form of knotted cloth. The Met notes that knots were used as amulets because they were believed capable of binding and releasing magic.

Amulets in Anglo-Saxon England

The British Museum catalogues seventh-century Anglo-Saxon pendant and figure amulets. Their survival provides direct material evidence that amuletic objects formed part of early medieval life in England.
