Demon, Jahi: The Soul-Stealing Seductress

Demon, Jahi: The Soul-Stealing Seductress
Create

Jahi demons exude an otherworldly beauty designed to captivate and confuse. Their human-like forms are flawless, with exotic, unplaceable features that suggest a heritage from multiple distant lands. Their eyes, shimmering with a hypnotic, unnatural light, draw attention and hold gazes. Their movements are fluid and graceful, like dancers perpetually in motion, accentuating their allure. A faint, almost imperceptible aura of danger clings to them, manifesting in the subtle glint of sharp claws or the occasional flash of fanged teeth when their masks of charm slip. Their skin often glows faintly under moonlight, further enhancing their mystical appearance.

Behavior

Jahis are consummate manipulators, skilled at weaving lies and half-truths to achieve their ends. They adopt roles effortlessly, posing as travelers, performers, or nobility to infiltrate mortal society. Their demeanor shifts based on their needs—seductive and beguiling to potential victims, or calm and calculating when planning their next move. They avoid unnecessary violence, preferring to let their charm and cunning accomplish what brute force cannot. Despite their beautiful exteriors, Jahis are inherently malevolent, taking pleasure in the confusion, despair, and ruin they sow.

Habitat

Unlike most demons, Jahis prefer the Material Plane to the harsh, chaotic realms of the Abyss. They are most often found in bustling cities or remote, exotic locales where they can blend into the crowd or appear as intriguing strangers. They favor places of decadence and indulgence—opulent palaces, lively theaters, or darkened taverns—where they can observe, manipulate, and hunt for susceptible prey. Their rare visits to the Abyss are typically brief, involving the delivery of captured souls or receiving new instructions from their masters.

Modus Operandi

Jahis are patient predators who strike when the moment is right. They typically begin by observing their targets, identifying vulnerabilities and desires to exploit. With their magical abilities, including charm person, alter self, and detect thoughts, they infiltrate and gain trust effortlessly.

Once their victims are fully ensnared, Jahis perform their infamous beguiling dance, mesmerizing anyone who watches. In moments of weakness or isolation, they use their terrifying swallow soul ability to extract the essence of their prey, imprisoning the soul within their body. The victim’s soul often appears as ghostly impressions on the Jahi’s abdomen, marking their latest conquest. They may deliver the soul to their demon prince masters in exchange for rewards or further influence.

Motivation

Jahis are driven by a thirst for power, both for themselves and their demon overlords. They relish the suffering of mortals, finding joy in the slow unraveling of their victims’ lives. Their servitude to demon princes often comes with personal ambitions—they crave favor and recognition within the infernal hierarchy. Some Jahis, however, seek only chaos, pursuing acts of cruelty and deceit for their own pleasure. Their greatest motivator is the collection of souls, a currency of immense value in the Abyss and a token of their success as agents of corruption.

In the mortal world, Jahis pursue their goals with elegance and subtlety, leaving devastation in their wake while remaining enigmatic figures whose true natures are often discovered far too late.

TRAITS

Innate Charmer. Jahi can cast charm person at will without expending a spell slot. The DC for this spell is 17.

Soul-Swallowing Gaze (Recharge 5-6). As a bonus action, Jahi can focus her gaze on a creature within 30 feet. The creature must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become charmed by her for 1 minute. While charmed, the creature is incapacitated and sees Jahi as a trusted ally. This effect ends early if Jahi harms the creature, or if another creature damages it.

Beguiling Dance (Recharge 5-6). Jahi can perform a mesmerizing dance. As an action, she can force all creatures within 30 feet of her that can see her to make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned for 1d6 rounds. A creature can only be affected once per day by Jahi’s Beguiling Dance.

Demonic Resistance. Jahi has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Darkvision. Jahi can see in darkness (magical or otherwise) within 120 feet as if it were bright light.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. Jahi makes two attacks: one with her claws and one with her Soul-Devouring Kiss.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage.

Soul-Devouring Kiss. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) necrotic damage, and Jahi gains temporary hit points equal to half the damage dealt. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or have its soul partially siphoned, reducing its hit point maximum by 7 (2d6). The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. If the target’s hit point maximum is reduced to 0, it is rendered unconscious until its soul is restored by a Greater Restoration or similar magic.

Swallow Soul (Recharge 6). Jahi can attempt to swallow the soul of a creature within 30 feet of her. The creature must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or have its soul ripped from its body, leaving it dead. The soul is stored within Jahi’s abdomen, causing visible bulges as it struggles. Jahi can hold only one soul at a time. A soul can be returned to its body if Jahi regurgitates it as a bonus action. If Jahi is slain, the soul is immediately freed and can be restored to life by magic such as True Resurrection or Wish.

SPELLS

Spellcasting. Jahi is a 9th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). She has the following spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): Thaumaturgy, Prestidigitation, Chill Touch, Dancing Lights
1st level (4 slots): Charm Person, Disguise Self, Mage Armor, Mirror Image
2nd level (3 slots): Misty Step, Invisibility, Hold Person
3rd level (3 slots): Counterspell, Fear, Hypnotic Pattern
4th level (3 slots): Greater Invisibility, Charm Monster
5th level (2 slots): Dominate Person, Cloudkill
6th level (1 slot): Mass Suggestion

TACTICS

Jahi is a master manipulator, and her tactics revolve around disorienting and isolating her enemies. At the start of combat, she uses Beguiling Dance to incapacitate the largest group of enemies, then focuses on weaker or isolated targets, casting Charm Person or Charm Monster to turn the tide of battle in her favor.

She will avoid direct confrontation, relying on Soul-Devouring Kiss and Swallow Soul to weaken her foes and steal their power. If she is overwhelmed, Jahi will use Misty Step to teleport to a safer location, regrouping and relying on her spellcasting to hinder enemies. She also uses Greater Invisibility to escape or prepare devastating Cloudkill attacks from a distance.

If she captures a soul with Swallow Soul, she uses it as leverage, often offering to “release” it in exchange for some bargain or favor. Her end goal is not just to defeat her foes, but to manipulate them into serving her, all while savoring their suffering and loss.

LEGENDARY ACTIONS

Jahi can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Jahi regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.

  • Charm Gaze. Jahi targets one creature she can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become charmed for 1 minute.
  • Demonic Movement. Jahi can move up to her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Enchanting Whispers (Costs 2 Actions). Jahi whispers in a creature’s mind, forcing it to make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become paralyzed until the end of its next turn.

REACTIONS

Hypnotic Reversal (Recharge 5-6). When a creature within 30 feet of Jahi successfully casts a spell that targets her, she can use her reaction to redirect the spell back at the caster. The creature must make a saving throw against the spell’s original DC. On a failed save, the spell is reflected back at the caster, using the caster’s original spell slot.

ENVIRONMENT

Jahi is often found in decadent, shadowy environments—luxurious palaces, darkened theatres, or abandoned temples—where the line between beauty and danger blurs. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and the air is filled with the sounds of hushed whispers, laughter, or soft music. Her presence lingers like a seductive poison, as the boundaries between ally and enemy become dangerously unclear.

This woman has a knowing and exotic look. There is something to her features that suggests a mixed parentage, although it is hard to place.

Originally from The Book of Fiends

Despite the best efforts of the courtesans and whores who follow him, the demon prince Socothbenoth knows that the resilient spirits and moral fortitude of some mortals help them resist the temptation that leads to an afterlife of servitude in the Abyss. In response to such frustrations, he created the jahi, beautiful demons who captivate mortals with erotic dances before swallowing their souls.

They resemble human women, allowing them to blend easily into mortal settlements. Jahi have exotic physical characteristics that make a specific human heritage difficult to determine. Most folk assume them to be from some unknown foreign land and leave it at that. A jahi’s seductive glances and persuasive bluffs generally get it out of trouble with more persistent inquisitors.

Despite their creation by the Patron of the Tents and Tabernacles of the Daughters, jahi have come to serve dozens of demon princes as spies and kidnappers. Unsuited to the hostile climes of most Abyssal layers, most jahi spend their whole lives on the Material Plane and visit the Abyss only to deliver a captured prize to their sovereign, usually in exchange for a sizable reward.

Jahi speak Abyssal and Common.

Jahi eschew combat unless confronted in their espionage activity or while attempting to kidnap a victim’s soul at the behest of a demon prince. If faced with a single opponent, a jahi attempts to befriend it with charm person and do away with it when convenient. Larger groups of enemies invariably are treated to its beguiling dance. A jahi’s natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as chaotic-aligned and evil-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Beguiling Dance (Su): Though masters of several forms of traditional (and not-so-traditional) dance, jahi specialize in beguiling rhythmic motions using their inherent magical essence to bewitch all who look upon them. The ability operates as a gaze attack with a range of 30 feet. Anyone viewing the dance must make a successful Will save (DC 14) or be dazed for 1d6 rounds. A dazed creature can take no actions (but defends itself normally). Creatures that successfully save are immune to that jahi’s beguiling dance for one day. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Spell-Like Abilities:

At will – alter self, blur, cat’s grace (self only), charm person (DC14), detect thoughts (DC 15), eagle’s splendor (self only), knock, mage armor, message, mirror image, misdirection (DC 15), obscure object (DC 15), shatter (DC 15), unseen servant.

Caster level 3rd. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Swallow Soul (Su): As a standard action, a jahi can open its mouth and inhale a great gust of air, subjecting a single mortal target within 30 feet to a horrifying magical attack. Those who make a successful Fortitude save (DC14) are immune to the jahi’s swallow soul ability for 24 hours. If the target fails, its soul is torn forcibly from its body and into the jahi’s mouth, where it is imprisoned in a special organ in her abdomen.

The soul appears as a wispy, translucent manifestation of the creature, and screams a terrible keen in the seconds of transition. The creature suffers mental anguish and must succeed at another DC 14 Fortitude save to avoid becoming stunned for 2d4 rounds. Soulless creatures cannot return from the dead via any means short of a miracle, true resurrection, or wish. A jahi can contain but a single soul at any one time.

Further, once it has done so it becomes significantly more difficult for it to operate in normal society. As the soul struggles fruitlessly to escape, it reaches for freedom so that impressions of its hands and face sometimes appear upon the jahi’s belly. A jahi can disgorge the soul from its body as a standard action. Doing so returns the soul to its rightful place in 2d4 rounds (no matter the distance between body and soul).

Those demon princes who employ jahi as kidnappers generally have some means of trapping captured souls in small cages or gems so that they might bargain with the mortals for services. Though they could doubtless destroy the captured souls, they gain no sustenance from doing so as they do from the annihilated souls of the chaotic evil dead. Creatures that lack souls, naturally, are immune to a jahi’s swallow soul attack. The save DC is Charisma-based.
