Liberation Domain
The Liberation Domain is divine opposition to captivity, magical restraint, fear and imposed control. Its clerics break bonds, keep allies moving and treat freedom as a sacred condition that must sometimes be defended by force.

Liberation Domain Mechanics
Liberation is a published domain in Pathfinder 1e and in older d20/3.5e divine material. It is not an official 2014 or 2024 Player’s Handbook Cleric subclass. The two 5e panels are therefore deliberately labelled compatible adaptations rather than official rules.
Liberation Domain — D&D 5.5e / 2024-Compatible
Rules status: compatible adaptation. This version translates the published Liberation theme into the 2024 Cleric’s 3rd-, 6th- and 17th-level subclass structure.
| Cleric Level | Feature |
|---|---|
| 3rd | Liberation Domain Spells, Unbound Step, Channel Divinity: Freedom’s Call |
| 6th | Break the Chain |
| 17th | Aura of Liberty |
Unbound Step
You have Advantage on ability checks and saving throws you make to avoid or end the Grappled or Restrained condition. Nonmagical difficult terrain does not cost you extra movement.
Channel Divinity: Freedom’s Call
As a Magic action, choose a number of creatures you can see within 30 feet up to your Wisdom modifier, minimum one. Each chosen creature can immediately repeat one saving throw against an effect currently causing it to be Charmed, Frightened, Paralyzed or Restrained, with Advantage on that save. A creature Grappled by another creature may instead immediately attempt to escape that grapple with Advantage.
Break the Chain
At 6th level, when a creature you can see within 30 feet becomes Grappled or Restrained, you can use your Reaction to let it immediately repeat the relevant escape check or saving throw with Advantage. You can use this Reaction a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus and regain all uses after a Long Rest.
Aura of Liberty
At 17th level, you project a 30-foot aura while you are conscious. You and allies in the aura have Advantage on saving throws against the Charmed, Frightened, Paralyzed and Restrained conditions and ignore magical difficult terrain. This aura does not automatically end an effect that allows no saving throw.

|---|---|
| 3rd | Remove Fear, Sanctuary, Remove Paralysis, Misty Step |

Liberation Domain — D&D 5e / 2014-Compatible

| Cleric Level | Feature |
|---|---|
| 1st | Domain Spells, Unbound Step |
| 2nd | Channel Divinity: Freedom’s Call |

Unbound Step

Channel Divinity: Freedom’s Call
Starting at 2nd level, as an Action, choose creatures you can see within 30 feet up to your Wisdom modifier, minimum one. Each may immediately repeat one saving throw against an effect causing it to be Charmed, Frightened, Paralyzed or Restrained, with Advantage. A creature held in a grapple may instead attempt to escape the grapple with Advantage.
Break the Chain
At 6th level, when a creature within 30 feet becomes Grappled or Restrained, you can use your Reaction to let it immediately repeat the relevant escape check or saving throw with Advantage. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest.
Potent Spellcasting
At 8th level, add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with a Cleric cantrip.
Aura of Liberty
At 17th level, you and allies within 30 feet have Advantage on saving throws against being Charmed, Frightened, Paralyzed or Restrained and ignore magical difficult terrain while you are conscious.

Liberation Domain — Pathfinder 1e
Rules status: published Pathfinder 1e Core Rulebook domain.
Liberation
For a total number of rounds per day equal to your Cleric level, you can move normally despite magical effects that would impede your movement, functioning as though protected by Freedom of Movement. The power activates automatically when needed, and its rounds need not be consecutive.
Freedom’s Call
At 8th level, you can project a 30-foot aura for a total number of rounds per day equal to your Cleric level. Allies in the aura have the confused, grappled, frightened, panicked, paralyzed, pinned and shaken conditions suppressed while they remain inside it. The underlying effect can return after they leave the aura or after the aura ends.

How the Liberation Domain Plays
Liberation is a reactive support domain: its best turns often happen immediately after an enemy believes it has taken someone out of the fight. It is strongest against controllers, grapplers, fear effects, paralysis and terrain that would otherwise pin the party in place.
In Combat
- Save the feature for lost actions. Ending or suppressing paralysis, restraint or fear can restore an ally’s entire turn.
- Stay within support range. The domain’s identity depends on being close enough to free another character when control effects land.
- Do not overread “freedom.” These mechanics resist restraint and coercion; they do not make a character immune to every law, oath, consequence or social obligation.
Outside Combat
Liberation priests work around prisons, ransom negotiations, debt bondage, captured travellers, magical compulsions and communities living under coercive rule. Depending on the patron, they may be sober legal advocates, ecstatic festival priests, ritual breakers of taboos, rescuers or dangerous enemies of institutions built on captivity.
Who Grants the Liberation Domain?
Two strong current site connections are Bacchus, whose worship can express release from ordinary restraint through wine and ecstasy, and Saturn, whose festival traditions invert ordinary social order and temporarily loosen expected bonds. The domain should be granted only where that liberating aspect is established for the deity rather than added merely because a god is rebellious or chaotic.
Priests, Temples and Rites
Liberation rites commonly use opened doors, removed cords, broken chains, exchanged clothing, public manumission, cleansing from compulsion and processions that cross a forbidden threshold. The details should follow the patron culture: Saturnian reversal is not the same religious practice as Bacchic ecstasy.
What Are Liberation Priests Doing Now?
These priests are breaking magical compulsions, negotiating releases, escorting escaped captives, testing whether a supposed oath was freely sworn, and arguing over the boundary between sacred freedom and simple lawlessness. Their presence can turn a prison, occupied town, noble household or cult compound into an immediate adventure site without requiring a separate “adventure hooks” section.
Historical and Mythological Context
Freedom is not a single religious idea. Festival licence, release from fear, freedom of movement, escape from slavery, ritual reversal and resistance to magical domination can all produce Liberation clergy with very different ethics and methods. The domain works best when the patron’s actual tradition defines which kind of freedom is sacred.
