Alan-a-Dale — Minstrel of the Greenwood

Alan-a-Dale — Minstrel of the Greenwood

Alan carries messages through places armed outlaws cannot enter, turning music, memory and performance into part of Sherwood’s intelligence system.

Alan-a-Dale is a travelling singer, messenger and keeper of stories whose freedom of movement makes him invaluable to Robin Hood. He can enter an inn, manor yard or market as entertainment and leave with information no visible spy could have gathered. He is also the band’s memory: the person most responsible for deciding which deeds become songs and which disappear into silence.

What Is Alan-a-Dale Doing Right Now?

Alan is tracing a rumour that new ballads blaming Robin for village killings were commissioned rather than composed organically. Someone is trying to poison the outlaw’s reputation.

He is moving between inns to identify the patron without letting the sponsor realise the songs have become an investigation.

Encounters

  • Alan changes a song mid-performance to warn the party about a listener.
  • A supposedly spontaneous anti-Robin ballad appears in three towns at once.
  • He needs protection while carrying a message that must look like sheet music.
  • A noble household hires him for entertainment and accidentally gives him access to the person Robin is hunting.

Personality, Appearance and Manner

Sociable, observant and less naive than his romantic songs suggest. Alan believes stories can save people or kill them depending on who controls the version.

He dresses as a prosperous travelling musician, carries an instrument and light blade, and rarely looks threatening enough to be searched carefully.

Relationships and Influence

  • Robin Hood: captain whose legend Alan partly creates.
  • Marian: source of courtly news that can safely be disguised as song.
  • Will Scarlet: friend whose pride sometimes creates material Alan would rather not immortalise.
  • Innkeepers and performers: a travelling information network.

Equipment and Possessions

  • Lute or similar stringed instrument
  • Dagger
  • Travelling cloak
  • Message tubes hidden among music
  • Small purse
  • Collection of local songs and names

Using This NPC at the Table

Alan should make information mobile. He can carry news through checkpoints, influence public opinion and create cover for social scenes without becoming an all-purpose magical bard.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Bought Ballad: someone funds songs designed to destroy Robin’s reputation.
  • The Hidden Message: a melody encodes a route.
  • The Manor Performance: entertainment becomes infiltration.
  • The Missing Minstrel: another performer vanishes after hearing the wrong conversation.
  • The Song That Should Not Exist: Alan hears a ballad describing an event that has not happened yet.
