The raven, northern stronghold and broken wonder: a sign used by Louhi’s court.

The wedding feast cannot begin until the bride returns from Louhi’s private chamber. A celebrated smith waits in the courtyard with a wondrous gift, the groom’s brothers swear the bargain is complete, and a raven on the lintel repeats the bride’s refusal in her own voice. Louhi stands between the guests and the locked door. Anyone who mistakes the daughter’s silence for consent is invited to speak alone with the witch-queen.

Louhi holds Pohjola through more than terror. Her halls shelter the people of a harsh northern country, and she guards the treasures, winter stores and dangerous secrets on which they depend. In the old songs she bargains with the greatest smith in the world for the Sampo, protects it in the mountain, and fights those who raid her land. In other songs she sends sickness, hides the light of heaven and turns into a great bird to pursue the stolen wonder. She can be a defender to her household and a calamity to everyone beyond it.

In her court an agreement matters, but its terms often conceal a second price. She does not need a demon’s permission to act, nor does she bow to a king who arrives carrying an army. The adventurers may be sent to rob her treasury, ask sanctuary from her enemies, rescue a captive or negotiate passage through the Frost-Gate. Every choice has consequences for the people who live beneath her protection.

What Is Happening Right Now?

The Daughter at the Winter Wedding

A foreign prince insists that forging a wondrous object entitles him to the hand of Louhi’s youngest daughter. The girl refuses, and Louhi refuses to have her treated as an object. Meanwhile the prince’s retainers seize the granary to force the issue. The party can get the retainers out, protect the daughter’s chosen companion or convince the prince to accept another reward before Louhi turns his escort into snow-covered stones.

The Lid beneath the Mountains

A miner near Sariola finds a fragment of a many-coloured lid buried in stone. Crops grow in his cellar, but a neighbouring village loses its winter grain in a single night. Louhi calls the fragment part of the shattered Sampo, and agents of Väinämöinen say it must be carried south. The adventurers must investigate the exchange of fortune and choose who can safely keep the fragment.

The Rift in the Ice

Cold vapours rise from a fissure beneath Pohjola. Fiends emerge carrying words of a promise once made to Louhi. She denies them passage across her land and asks the party to find the original seal. A demon-worshipping courtier offers a quicker solution that would give him command of the fortress. The heroes can restore the seal, expose the courtier and leave Pohjola owing them a favour that is dangerous to collect.

Where the Moon Is Held

Fishermen stop sailing at night because the Moon no longer reflects in the northern water. Louhi’s steward claims his mistress has locked it behind a mountain of stone, and rival rulers prepare for war. The sorceress says a stolen key, not the light itself, is missing. The party must recover it before the unlit harbours starve.

The Woman Who Rules the North

Louhi is old, astute and far more difficult to surprise than her enemies admit. She wears winter-black robes and a crown of pale metal, and her hall smells of woodsmoke, salt and cold iron. The ravens that watch her roofs can carry messages through a blizzard. She is capable of feasting a guest lavishly, then measuring what the guest has promised with terrifying accuracy.

Her Lawful Evil character rests on hierarchy and obligation rather than an appetite for pointless cruelty. A household under her rule knows what a promise buys, whom to serve and how to seek an audience. Yet dissent can lead to confinement, and outsiders may pay for offences committed by their countrymen. She rewards loyalty, protects vital stores and punishes theft ruthlessly. A child who asks refuge is more likely to receive it than an armed ruler who arrives claiming entitlement.

The Sampo and the Bride

Louhi asks Ilmarinen to forge the Sampo, whose many-coloured lid promises abundance to Pohjola. She hides it deep within a rocky mountain, guarding the wealth it brings. The daughter at the centre of the bargain is a person with choices, not an object that can be transferred simply because a craft is complete. This tension between contract and consent can overturn even Louhi’s careful plans.

The Great Bird on the Sea

When Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen steal the Sampo, Louhi arms her people and pursues them. She changes into a huge bird of prey and gathers warriors onto her wings and tail. The Sampo breaks in the struggle. Its fragments carry good fortune to the shores where they land, while Pohjola’s prosperity withers. Louhi is not merely a thief chasing a prize: she fights to recover a source of life for her homeland.

Disease, Darkness and the Nine

Angered by the loss, Louhi sends the diseases that trouble Kalevala, then conceals the Sun and Moon. Loviatar is associated with the birth of the Nine Diseases; Louhi unleashes them in her campaign against Väinölä. These are separate powers. Väinämöinen struggles to save the afflicted and recover the light. Her actions expose the terrible reach of a ruler who decides that all neighbours must pay for the suffering of her own land.

The Frost-Gate Hall

Within Pohjola, black pines and steep river gorges surround the fortress of Sariola. Its great gate is covered with old rune-marks; ravens nest high in its timber towers. Below the hall runs a stair to stone cellars where grain never freezes and the cold of the mountain presses against every door. Far deeper, an ancient vault once held the Sampo. Louhi keeps only its lid and whatever fragments she can still wrest from the sea.

The hall can feed a village or imprison a king. One room holds gifts from suitors who failed the queen’s demands; another holds winter cloaks belonging to travellers who never made it south. The guards are disciplined and well supplied. Most are ordinary people who live in the North rather than servants summoned from another plane.

Fortress Effects

The Closed Road. Snow hides one of the valley passes whenever an armed company attempts to approach without heralds. A determined guide can still find it.

Old Agreements. Runes cut into the gate reveal whether a visitor has returned a pledged gift. The gate knows nothing of secret thoughts.

The Mountain’s Silence. Spells that reveal hidden rooms show only stone around the Sampo vault unless a guardian speaks its true name.

Ravens at the Window. Louhi may hear a warning carried by a bird from anywhere in the surrounding district, but the messenger can be followed or misled.

Baba Yaga and the Demons beneath Pohjola

Baba Yaga was Louhi’s foster-mother and teacher in the witch-queen’s older years. She taught the young witch how to hold a name in a circle of iron, question a dangerous visitor without freeing it, and end a bargain that had ceased to serve its maker. The two have not always trusted one another since.

Louhi later bound Fraz-Urb’luu to learn secrets of deception and imprisoned Graz’zt in an attempt to control the spreading rift into the Abyss beneath Pohjola. Graz’zt’s malice turned the binding against her. Fiends broke through the old seals and forced Louhi into a battle that ruined part of her beauty and gave her a dreadful crone-like aspect. His earthly form was defeated, but the rift remains an old wound beneath the northern land.

These wars are part of the kingdom’s present magical history, not tales taken from the ancient runos. Louhi commands no entire species of fiend. She treats demons as enemies or dangerous captives, and no promise from them is accepted without a seal, a witness and a way to end it. A powerful fiend might still exploit a careless bargain: nothing about the queen makes her infallible.

Relics of the Witch-Queen

Louhi wears a northern torc engraved with sealing runes, a crown of winter metal and a cloak woven with raven feathers. The Torc of the Witch-Queen shields the bearer from unwanted charms and stores spells of protection. Her cold-iron dagger is carried for emergencies, not because she prefers to duel a warrior in close combat. These objects are held in her court, not a collection of magical devices belonging to another witch from another mythology.

Adventure Hooks

The Bride and the Mountain

The Sampo’s smallest surviving fragment has been promised as a royal wedding gift. The bride suspects its blessing will destroy the harvests of the neighbouring villages. Louhi orders the characters to find out who has stolen the fragment and whether it can be returned without beginning another war. The court’s smith refuses to touch it unless the bride herself states what she wishes.

Nine Doors of Pestilence

In the fortress’s oldest cellar stand nine doors, each marked with a different form of sickness. One opens when a prisoner escapes. Loviatar‘s followers insist a forgotten debt must be paid; Louhi wants the doors sealed before the winter feast. The party must learn which door was opened and how to free the person responsible without spreading the affliction further.

The Demon that Offers an Easier Way

A masked adviser proposes sealing the Abyssal rift beneath Pohjola by sacrificing an innocent prisoner. Louhi rejects the price but believes the adviser knows an alternate incantation. The adventurers must identify the adviser, expose the false dilemma and restore the old iron circles before the seals fail.

The Last Piece of the Sampo

A young fisherman finds a glittering fragment after a storm and is pursued by agents from both Pohjola and the southern settlements. The fragment can bring a good harvest but cannot satisfy everyone who claims it. The characters must protect the fisherman, negotiate a share of its power or discover a way to return it safely to the sea.

Sources and Game Credits

The chief epic sources are Kalevala, Rune X (the Sampo bargain); Rune XLII and Rune XLIII (the theft, pursuit and great bird); Rune XLV (the Nine Diseases); and Rune XLVII (the theft of the Sun and Moon). The Kalevala Society provides a concise sequence of these stories.

Baba Yaga, the Abyssal rift, bound demon lords, the torc, castle details and the four original game-statistics blocks belong to the fantasy history of this setting; they are not claims made by the ancient Finnish songs or official printed Louhi statistics. Game rules derived from SRD 5.2.1 are adapted under CC BY 4.0; older open-game conventions follow their applicable licences.
