Sol Invictus is the Roman “Unconquered Sun,” a late imperial cult-title of Sol and the Roman cultural face of the same solar divinity identified with Helios. He is not Apollo under another name; Roman religion can distinguish solar divinity from Apollo even when both carry radiant imagery.

Same Solar Deity, Different Cultural Aspect

Sol and Helios are the same underlying solar god in this setting. Sol Invictus is the Roman imperial cult-title and presentation of that deity. The Hellenic Helios page remains separate because Greek solar myth and Roman imperial solar cult are different religious contexts.

Campaign Divine Tier 38 describes Sol’s setting-scale power. The 5.5e rules-facing form remains CR 30 / PB +9; the greater scale is campaign-only.

Sol Invictus in Roman Religion

“Invictus” means unconquered. Roman solar worship was older than the late empire, but Aurelian’s patronage gave the unconquered Sun unusual imperial prominence and a powerful public identity.

The cult’s political use should not erase the god beneath it. Emperors may claim the Sun; they do not own sunrise.

What Is Sol Invictus Doing Right Now?

Every successor state that claims Roman legitimacy has discovered solar imagery. Sol watches which rulers use the sun as a symbol of order and which merely borrow its crown.

His cult becomes active against magical darkness, eclipses, false suns and rulers who claim they cannot be defeated because the god is “theirs.”

Worship in the Campaign Present

Soldiers, rulers, couriers, astrologers and urban solar fraternities keep Sol’s cult. Dawn rites are common; public radiate crowns and solar standards are more political.

Some communities identify Sol directly with Helios, others emphasise the specifically Roman Invictus title. Both recognise the same solar deity in this setting.

Domains, Spells and Divine Gifts

Sol’s clergy favour Light, Order, War and Knowledge themes. Suitable spells include Daylight, See Invisibility, Beacon of Hope, Wall of Light, Sunbeam, True Seeing, Sunburst and Foresight.

Gift: Unhidden

Once per long rest, the devotee can see Invisible creatures within 30 feet for 1 minute while in bright light.

Gift: Dawn Courage

At sunrise, the devotee may end Frightened on themselves and one ally.

Relics

The Radiate Crown

Its rays grow warm when its wearer falsely claims divine approval for political power.

The Chariot Pin of Sol

Mounted on a vehicle, it points toward the nearest route that will reach open sunlight fastest.

Relationships

Helios is Sol’s Hellenic aspect. Apollo shares light and prophecy but remains a distinct divine being. Luna is the corresponding Roman lunar power.

Use Sol Invictus Tonight

The Sun Does Not Rise

Dawn arrives everywhere except one imperial city.

The Emperor’s Crown Burns

A radiate crown becomes too hot to wear during a coronation.

Two Suns at Noon

A second sun appears over a battlefield and only one casts shadows.

Divine Estate and Regional Effects

Where Sol Invictus’s presence is strong, a major sanctuary can project the following effects across roughly six miles. A small shrine normally manifests only one effect in a smaller area. Unless another divine power contests them, the effects fade over 1d10 days after the sanctuary is abandoned or desecrated.

Daylight Wins

Magical darkness of ordinary mortal strength cannot persist in direct sunlight inside a major consecrated region.

The Unconquered Rise

A creature reduced to 0 Hit Points by exhaustion, exposure or ordinary hardship stabilises automatically if direct sunrise reaches it before death.

Shadows Point True

At local noon, natural shadows align perfectly and expose illusions that attempt to falsify the position of the sun.

Deep Dive

Continue through the Roman Pantheon, Helios 2, Apollo, Jupiter, Luna. Follow the cult into Rome and wider Italy, or use the Cleric and Cleric Domains pages for player-facing worship.

Historical Sources and Rules Compatibility

Sol Invictus is treated as the Roman imperial cult-title of Sol, with strong ancient identification between Sol and Helios. Apollo is not collapsed into Sol. Mechanics and campaign material are original.
