Theresa Berkley — Keeper of the Discreet House

Theresa Berkley — Keeper of the Discreet House

Theresa Berkley runs a private London house where wealthy clients pay for discretion—and where private conversation is often more valuable than coin.

Theresa Berkley operates an adult entertainment house for affluent clients, but the campaign entry keeps the business non-explicit and concentrates on information, boundaries, security and reputation. Her establishment is valuable to adventurers because people speak carelessly where they believe privacy has been purchased. Theresa protects her workers fiercely, sells information selectively and understands that officials often prefer discreet solutions to public scandal.

What Is Theresa Berkley Doing Right Now?

A client has threatened one of Theresa’s workers after revealing information that overlaps with a political investigation. Theresa wants the threat stopped without exposing every other person who visited the house.

She has quietly moved the witness to another property and is feeding different false locations to see which official or criminal network leaks them.

Encounters

  • Theresa refuses to name a client but offers a detail that lets the party identify him themselves.
  • A frightened worker needs escort to a safe house.
  • An official proposes a raid for political theatre rather than law.
  • A wealthy client hires thugs to recover a letter before Theresa can decide what to do with it.

Personality, Appearance and Manner

Businesslike, discreet, hard to shock and very clear about the difference between consensual adult vice and coercion.

She dresses well enough to command respect without imitating nobility and keeps conversations brief until she knows what the other person actually wants.

Relationships and Influence

  • Workers: her first loyalty inside the business.
  • Damaris Page and Elizabeth Cresswell: rivals, peers and occasional emergency allies in London’s information economy.
  • Affluent clients: sources of money, gossip and danger.
  • Watch officers: some hostile, some pragmatic, some quietly dependent on her information.

Equipment and Possessions

  • House keys and staff signals
  • Private ledgers with coded names
  • Correspondence and safe-house directions
  • Cash reserve for emergencies
  • Trusted doorkeepers and messengers

Using This NPC at the Table

Theresa avoids violence by controlling doors, information and timing. If the house is attacked, she prioritises evacuating workers and protecting records over fighting personally.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Threatened Witness: a worker heard one sentence too much.
  • The False Raid: officials target the house to hide a different crime.
  • The Leaking Safe House: one of three officials is selling locations.
  • The Client Letter: possession is dangerous even if nobody reads it.
  • Three Houses: Theresa, Damaris and Cresswell must cooperate against a threat to all their networks.

Mythical and Historical Context

The historical Theresa Berkley died in 1836 and ran a private establishment in nineteenth-century London. The Theresa encountered here is a fictional fifteenth-century namesake with responsibilities for household staff, discretion and client information. Those campaign roles do not imply that the historical woman lived in 1454. The biographical record describes the later woman; her commercial speciality is not reproduced in this non-explicit adventure setting. Her character’s intelligence network and game statistics are invented.

Sources and Adaptation

Inspired by the historical Theresa Berkley but adapted into a fifteenth-century London information broker. Adult material is deliberately non-explicit; the page focuses on discretion, worker safety, clientele and secrets.
