Ebenezer Scrooge
Ebenezer Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who despises his fellow man. Described thus: “The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red, his thin lips blue, and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice.
Scrooge is currently one of the richest and most miserly men in London, he’s acquired great wealth as a slum lord and loan shark who offers loans at extremely high interest rates then enforces their repayment though blackmail and violence.
Once Scrooge was a moderately successful honest hardworking businessman, regularly giving to charities alongside his business partner Jacob Marley. What Scrooge was unaware of was his wealth came from Marley’s shadier business practices, tax avoidance and exploiting of the poor and vulnerable. Which he fronted though their legitiment business. Seven years to the day of Marley’s death Scrooge was declared bankrupt. After giving what he could to his staff. He left his repossessed office for the last time and walked home to await the bailiffs to be taken him to debtors prison. That night the personality of Ebenezer Scrooge shifted from a man who cared about others to a man who only cares about himself and his wealth. This was due to the messages four devils sent from hell sent by Dispater. The first the ghost of Jacob Marley, gave Scrooge an initial warning of how without a life led by greed, it would result in the misery of him being eternally poor and powerless. Whilst the ruthless who though spite and selfishness impose meager wages, long work hours, and unreasonable punishments are living forever in wealth and opulence in the City of Dis.
Next the devil of business past reminds Scrooge of how he wasted his youth studying whilst others who cheated and stole or were just plain lucky easily attained wealth happiness and position over him. It reminded Scrooge of what he once felt that he could achieve if he had money such as helping his sister or enabling him to marry the girl of his dreams.
The devil of business Present an erinyes showed him the abundance of the elite in society and how it was not properly distributed amongst the social classes. She takes him to brothels and fine restaurants and shows him the lifestyle others are enjoying. She makes him realize how little he has achieved with his charitable work and how his money was just siphoned off by unjust people never reaching the poor.
Finally, Titivillus (patron of scribes) arrived under the guise of (what is yet to Come) and showed Scrooge’s fate due to his soft nature; to slowly freeze to death over a single coal homeless under a bridge. With all the ungrateful people he helped throughout his life laughing and ostracizing him due to hs poverty. He shows Scrooge how in the future businesses will be be called corporations and become so powerful they will command what kings. Scrooge questions if his fate is yet to come, or of what could be. This final encounter convinces Scrooge that in order for him to succeed, he must first care first and only for himself.
