Barbara must balance family patrons, the prince-bishop and Regensburg’s civic council, none of whom speaks for all residents.
Obermünster’s household preserves archives, carved emblems and spaces dedicated to several recognised gods. Noblewomen study languages, law, accounts, ritual obligations and estate management alongside practical crafts. The household’s discipline is exacting because a careless seal or broken oath can cost a family its inheritance. Regensburg is an independent imperial city on the Danube, not the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria. The Ward Who Took the Seal
One of Abbess Barbara’s young wards has vanished after discovering a draft estate transfer. Her family demands her return; the abbey’s steward swears she left willingly. The city watch will enter the precinct if the missing young woman is not produced, but the abbess refuses to hand a frightened witness to men whose paymaster is unknown.
A Gift with Conditions
A Bavarian noble offers to endow a study room and repair its roofs, provided his family gains the right to appoint its custodian. Accepting would solve a pressing debt while placing the abbey’s most sensitive correspondence under foreign influence.

Petitioners wait beneath the supervision of a gatekeeper and two household attendants. Noble connections win faster entry, but they do not guarantee a favourable hearing. Characters may find lodging through a sponsor; armed followers remain outside the inner precinct.
The Teaching Hall
Young noblewomen study letters, account books, estate law and sacred obligations. A tutor keeps an exercise copy of every important contract. Those practice sheets may reveal who taught an unknown hand to imitate the abbess’s signature.
The Household Treasury and Sealed Archive
Stewards hold rents, keys and grant records under separate seals. The most valuable object is not a jewel but an inventory that identifies who controls three rural villages. The archive opens only on the abbess’s order or by agreement with the custodial council.
People and Factions
Abbess Barbara von Absberg governs this house, not Niedermünster. She is capable of granting protection but cannot casually ignore debts or the wishes of noble sponsors. A steward of estates knows which tenants are in arrears. A senior tutor is loyal to the pupils before their parents. Nearby Niedermünster, led by Ottilia von Absberg, shares important family connections without surrendering its independent authority.

Visitors may arrange copying, language instruction, discreet research, modest ritual healing or mediation through a trusted introduction. Sacred obligations belong to several gods; there is no universal ecclesiastical hierarchy. The abbess’s safe-conduct is recognised inside her house but may not protect a traveller beyond the next city gate.
