Belfast is an ancient city, evidence of this is the Giant’s Ring, an ancient henge with a tomb at the centre, is located near the city, as well as a hill fort located in the north of the city.
A castle was built to protect and dominate the area. The castle has since been attacked, recovered, destroyed and rebuilt many times.
Despite Belfast’s seemingly growing significance it was still very much a small settlement. However recently trade monopolies have been purchased and bestowed pon Belfast making new trade flood into the town.
