The Lizard (Dr. Curtis “Curt” Connors) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #6 (November 1963) as an enemy of the superhero Spider-Man. While the character has retained this role throughout most of his subsequent appearances, he has also been portrayed as a tragic antihero and occasional ally of Spider-Man. Connors is sometimes an ally of Spider-Man just as himself, and not necessarily as his alter ego.

In the original version of the story, Curt Connors was a geneticist researching the ability of certain reptiles to regrow missing limbs. He developed a lizard DNA-based serum that would allow humans to do the same, and tested it on himself, hoping to regain his missing right arm; instead, he transformed into a feral anthropomorphic lizard. Although Spider-Man was able to undo the transformation, the Lizard remained a part of Connors’ subconscious, and would resurface time and time again; often retaining Connors’ intelligence and attempting to replace mankind with a race of reptilian creatures like himself. Many stories featuring the Lizard deal with the effects he has on Connors’ life and psyche, as the latter lives in constant fear that the Lizard will one day completely and irreversibly take over his body. Because of this, he works tirelessly to find a permanent cure for his alternate personality, much to the worry of his wife, Martha Connors, and son, Billy.

The character has appeared in numerous Spider-Man adaptations, including films, animated series, and video games. In live-action, he was portrayed by Dylan Baker in Spider-Man 2 (2002) and Spider-Man 3 (2007), and by Rhys Ifans in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). In 2009, the Lizard was ranked IGN‘s 62nd Greatest Comic Villain of All Time.

Alternate Form

The Lizard possesses no powers in his normal form as Curt Conners. As Conners he has the following statistics. WP: 13 VP: 41 Strength: 14, Dexterity: 13, Constitution: 13, Intelligence: 22, Wisdom: 14, Charisma: 13. He has the notable skills of Craft (chemistry) +23, Knowledge (earth and life sciences) +23, and Treat Injury +16

Bestial Intelligence

The Lizard normally possesses an extremely advanced intelligence. Under extremely high or outside interference the Lizard will revert into a primal bestial state. When this occurs his Intelligence score drops to 3, and his Wisdom increases to 26. When in a bestial state the Lizard cannot make any Intelligence based skill checks.

Bestial Rage

Even at his most intelligent the Lizard is subject to bestial rages. Whenever he suffers 50% of his vitality points or 25% of his wound points in damage the Lizard falls into a bestial fury. In this state he receives a +6 on all attack and damage rolls. He is also immune to fatigue and exhaustion except from cold attacks. When he is in the throes of Bestial Intelligence he is always considered to be in Bestial Rage.

Cold Blooded

The Lizard is cold blooded. When subject to any cold based assault he becomes sluggish and slow to react. The Lizard must make a Fort save (DC 15+damage inflicted) or be considered fatigued. If already fatigued and struck by another cold assault he must make another save or be exhausted.

Pheromones

Lizard can emit pheromones that cause humans to behave violently. As a full round action he can emit a cloud that effects all those in a 20 ft radius. Consider them to be in a barbarian frenzy for 2d10 minutes. A Will save (DC 24) can avoid the frenzy totally.

Reptile Telepathy

The Lizard can communicate with and control all reptiles within a mile of himself. Treat as a dominate monster effect. Reptiles with animal intelligence receive no saving throw to resist the control. Those with Intelligence of 3 or more may make a Will save (DC 24) to resist.

Skirmish

When Lizard moves more than 5 feet in a round, he gains a +2 Dodge bonus to AC and deals +2d6 points of damage.

Super Reflexes

The Lizard has reflexes far beyond those of mortal men, allowing him to react instantly to threats:

The Lizard.

If Lizard is the subject of any attack that allows a reflex save for half damage and is successful he suffers no damage. If he fails his save he takes half damage.

  • +8 bonus on all Dexterity based skills (and he uses his Dexterity modifier for Climb and Jump checks)
  • +6 bonus on all Reflex saves
  • +6 initiative bonus

Super Speed Level 3

The following benefits are provided from Superspeed Level 3

  • +3 speed bonus to AC, attack, initiative, and Reflex saves
  • +1 speed bonus to damage rolls
  • Lizard may make 3 swift actions in a round.
  • Lizard reduces the amount of time to complete an action by 1 step, allowing him to take full round actions a standard actions.
  • Characters with less than Superspeed level 1 are considered flat-footed for the purposes of Lizard’s attacks. Characters with Uncanny Dodge have an effective Superspeed Level equal to their Dexterity modifier for this purpose.
  • When using the run action, Lizard moves x10 his movement rate.

Superhuman Strength Level 3

  • Lizard possesses superhuman Strength and is able to lift 8x times what his Strength scores indicates.
  • Lizard receives a +3 bonus on melee damage
  • Lizard receives a +6 bonus on grapple and bulrush checks

The Lizard has a +12 racial bonus to ClimbHide, and Swim checks.
