Mountain Giant (Jotun)

Mountain Giant
My Images (midjourney.com)

Appearance: Mountain Giants, known as Jotuns in Nordic folklore, tower above the landscape, their massive frames shrouded in rugged hides and thick fur, blending seamlessly with the craggy terrain. Their weather-beaten faces are etched with ancient wisdom, and their piercing eyes gleam with a primal intelligence.

Behavior: Despite their imposing stature, Mountain Giants are often reclusive, preferring the solitude of their lofty abodes. They are guardians of the mountains, fiercely protective of their domains and the creatures that inhabit them. While generally peaceful, they can unleash devastating fury upon any who threaten their mountain homes or the balance of nature.

Habitat: Mountain Giants dwell in the highest reaches of jagged peaks, where the air is thin and the landscape is unforgiving. They carve out cavernous dwellings amidst the rocky crags, blending seamlessly with the natural formations of their mountainous habitats.

Modus Operandi: Mountain Giants are adept hunters and trackers, stalking their prey with silent precision through the rugged terrain of their mountain domains. They rely on their immense strength and keen senses to navigate the treacherous landscape and secure sustenance for themselves and their kin.

Motivation: Mountain Giants are deeply connected to the natural world, viewing themselves as stewards of the mountains and the creatures that inhabit them. Their motivations are often tied to maintaining the delicate balance of their ecosystems, ensuring that harmony prevails amidst the towering peaks they call home.

Keen Sight and Smell. The giant has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight or smell.

Innate Spellcasting. The giant’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 14). The giant can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: detect magic
  • 3/day each: fog cloud, pass without trace

Mountain Born. The giant is acclimated to high-altitude environments, including elevations above 20,000 feet.

Rock Catching. If a rock or similar object is hurled at the giant, the giant can, with a successful DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, catch the missile and take no bludgeoning damage from it.

Actions

Multiattack. The giant makes two greatclub attacks.

Greatclub. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d8 + 9) bludgeoning damage.

Rock. Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 60/240 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10 + 7) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Rock Deflect. When the giant is targeted by a ranged weapon attack, it can use its reaction to deflect the missile, provided the attack is with a rock or similar object. The giant must make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw. If successful, the giant deflects the missile, causing it to miss.

Legendary Actions

The giant can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The giant regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Rock Attack. The giant makes one rock attack.
  • Stomp. The giant stomps the ground, causing tremors in a 10-foot radius. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Mountain’s Resilience (Costs 2 Actions). The giant channels the strength of the mountains, gaining resistance to all damage types until the start of its next turn.

The giants are known for their great strength and stupidity. They were antagonistic and destructive.

Remarkably, several of the giantesses (who were perhaps not as bestial as the males of their species) had trysts with some of the Norse gods. Thor, Odin, Tyr and Heimdall had a giant for a parent. Both of Loki’s parents were giants, yet he was still considered an Aesir god. Some of the more colorful giants included Hrungnir, whose head and heart were made of stone (and pinned Thor when the Thunderer killed him), Gerd, a giantess who married Freyr, Hrimthurs, who built the walls around Asgard in six months on a bet (and was also killed by Thor), and Gunnlod, a giantess who Odin had to sleep with for three nights before he could drink her father’s mead.
