John Lambton — The Heir and the Worm

John Lambton is the heir who caught a small, hateful serpent in the River Wear and threw it down a well. Years later he returns to a ravaged home. He cannot undo the first mistake, but he can face what it became — and decide what price he is prepared to pay.

Traits

Veteran’s Strike. John’s Longsword deals one additional die of damage from his years of training (included in the attack below). He is a skilled mortal knight, not a spellcaster.

Hold the Line. John has Advantage on saving throws against the Frightened condition while he can see an ally within 10 ft.

Armoured for a Grapple. John may wear outward-pointing spikes when facing creatures that crush or coil around their prey. These are weapons and protection, not a special vulnerability of the Lambton Worm. Resolve attacks with spikes using ordinary equipment or improvised-weapon rules; wearing them never deals automatic bonus damage.

Actions

Multiattack. John makes three Longsword attacks.

Longsword. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage.

Heavy Crossbow. Ranged Attack Roll: +4, range 100/400 ft. Hit: 6 (1d10 + 1) piercing damage. Loading applies; the crossbow is a single ranged attack, not part of Multiattack.

Bonus Actions

Lead the Guard (Recharge 5–6). John chooses one ally within 30 ft. who can hear him. That ally can use its Reaction to move up to half its Speed, without provoking Opportunity Attacks from one creature John can see.

Reactions

Shield Guard. When a creature John can see attacks an ally within 5 ft. of him, John grants that ally +2 AC against the triggering attack. He must be holding his shield and can use this Reaction before the hit is resolved.

Equipment and Tactics

Equipment. Mail, shield, longsword, heavy crossbow with 20 bolts, hunting horn; outward-pointing armour spikes can be fitted for fights against constricting foes.

Tactics. John defends the milk-carriers, holds an exit for retreating villagers and fights alongside allies. He has no Legendary Actions, lair actions, spells or automatic death curse. The witch’s nine-generation condition is a separate story threat, not an attack he can make.

SpiralWorlds original monster-style NPC conversion for D&D 2024; combat CR is an estimate for this house creature, not an official published John Lambton.

Armour Spikes. John uses the listed armour-spike attack when the normal Pathfinder grapple rules allow it. The spikes are standard equipment; neither the Worm nor another grappler suffers automatic 3d8 damage or special damage-reduction bypass.

Tactics. John guards the smith and milk deliveries before pursuing the Worm. On the river rock he holds it near strong running water rather than trying to kill it in dry fields. He has no spells, spell slots, mythic power or death-curse ability.

Pathfinder 1e heroically equipped fighter build. All values use the listed gear and feats; armour spikes follow the edition’s usual combat rules.

Armour Spikes. As an alternative to his longsword, John can attack with the listed armour spikes when the normal D&D 3.5e grapple rules permit. The harness gives no unique bonus against the Lambton Worm, no free 3d8 damage and no automatic damage-reduction bypass.

Tactics. He protects the retreat path and fights on the river rock if he can; he has no spellcasting, supernatural curse, or monster-style Legendary Actions.

D&D 3.5e fighter build. This edition treats full plate and Toughness differently from Pathfinder 1e; the numbers are intentionally not copied between panels.

What John Is Doing Now

He is arranging horses, speaking to smiths and looking for a trustworthy guide to the River Wear. The local witch has shown him how to fight the Worm in bladed armour, but she has also placed a condition on his victory: he must kill the first living thing he sees after defeating it or his family will suffer for nine generations. He has not revealed those terms to the whole household. He has made no decision to kill an innocent to satisfy her.

If outsiders seem capable, he will ask them to help clear the riverbank and protect the milk carriers. He may insist on facing the Worm himself; he will listen if a better plan can save more people. He does not need to steal the final blow from the player characters.

Appearance and Manner

John wears travel-stained mail before he puts on his special armour. He listens closely when villagers describe lost cattle, but bristles at a remark that his foolishness brought the Worm upon them. He can give an honest apology more easily to one person than to a whole hall. When nervous, he checks the fastening on his shield or the cord of his hunting horn.

Relationships and Choices

The elder Lambton: John’s father is relieved that his son has returned, yet anxious to keep him out of the Worm’s coils. In the familiar ending, his father reaches John before the intended hound. John cannot kill his father, so he breaks the witch’s condition and her curse takes hold. That outcome is a warning, not a script the characters must follow.

Iseult of the Ford, the witch: She advises using blades against the coils and running water against the Worm’s rejoining flesh. Her threatened family doom is one possible form of Bestow Greater Curse, a spell she can use in other ways against other people. The serpent itself casts no curse. John needs her knowledge but fears her demand. The players can challenge her terms, seek another solution or refuse the bargain.

The Worm: John’s negligence gave the monster a chance to grow. It is not his pet or a willing servant. He wants it gone, but can be persuaded that the people on the milk route matter more than glory.

Using John in Play

Before a fight: He supplies a workshop, labourers and some iron if the party can protect them. The household can supply armour spikes or a protective harness if the smith has time and materials. Use ordinary equipment and grappling rules; there is no special extra damage against the Worm.

At the river: He knows the legend but not every current or landing. Let the ferryman advise the party. John’s hunting horn can provide a clear signal if the characters make an arrangement; the signal does not itself make his father, a hound or another innocent appear.

After the Worm: John must decide how to face the witch’s condition, not endure an automatic curse cast by the dying monster. Players can negotiate with the witch, investigate a way to undo her binding or refuse the demanded sacrifice. They may also demand that the household repair the harm done to local farms. If John dies, the villagers still need their river made safe.

Adventure Hooks

A messenger offers good pay to escort the milk carts. A smith refuses to make the barbed harness without guards. A frightened family servant brings the party the other half of the wise woman’s warning. In every case the people of Worm Hill and the lower Wear retain their own reasons to act.

Continue the Adventure

Lower Wear explains where the milk carts travel, who runs the ferries and where the smith can work. Worm Hill covers the hilltop lookout and approaches. The Lambton Worm entry has separate stat blocks and the rules for the river, barbed armour and rejoining flesh. Folklore and Adaptation

This is the legendary John Lambton of north-east England, not a fixed biographical profile of the later historical Earl of Durham. The well, the Worm, the spiked suit and the witch’s conditional nine-generation curse come from the traditional tale. The present objectives and edition mechanics are campaign adaptations. Accounts of his foreign service and the required sacrifice differ by retelling; those differences are play choices rather than settled facts about the campaign’s future.
