Xiwangmu — Queen Mother of the West

Chinese Pantheon · Greater Deity · Immortality, longevity, sacred mountains and divine sovereignty
Xiwangmu rules the western sacred realm where immortality is granted, tested and withheld. Her peaches promise deathless life, but access to them is a matter of divine favour, rank and worthiness rather than theft or purchase.

Worship in the Present World
Xiwangmu attracts seekers of longevity, healing, transformation and hidden wisdom, but her favour is never treated as a commodity. Pilgrims, physicians, hermits, alchemists and rulers approach her for different reasons, and motive matters. A petitioner who seeks endless life through fear or domination may receive a very different answer from one who seeks time to complete a necessary duty.
Her worship is strongest around sacred mountains, longevity rites, immortal traditions and stories of journeys into the far west. Jade tokens, peaches, cranes, phoenix imagery and invitations to celestial banquets can all mark her presence.
Divine Mechanics
Campaign Divine Tier 35 represents Xiwangmu as an ancient sovereign of immortality rather than a conventional celestial official. These are campaign deity statistics rather than official published rules for the goddess.

Banquet of the Immortals (Recharge 5–6). Xiwangmu chooses up to six creatures within 120 feet. Allies regain 50 Hit Points and end one level of Exhaustion. Hostile creatures sustained by undeath, stolen longevity or corrupt immortality make a DC 31 Charisma save, taking 55 (10d10) radiant damage on a failure or half on a success.
Western Summons (Recharge 6). One creature Xiwangmu can see within 180 feet makes a DC 31 Charisma save. On a failure it is banished to a sealed garden in her western realm until the end of its next turn and returns prone; if it is an immortal or celestial, the banishment lasts 1 minute and it can repeat the save at the end of each turn.

Divine rules. Divine Rank applies normally to attacks, saves, checks and armour. Portfolio spell-like abilities function at caster level 26th.
Salient Divine Abilities
Signature salient abilities include Alter Reality, Divine Blessing, Divine Healing, Divine Splendor, Gift of Life, Know Secrets, Rejuvenation and additional rank-appropriate powers governing immortality, judgment and the western paradise.
Portfolio Spell-Like Abilities
Xiwangmu uses Healing, Knowledge, Luck and Protection portfolio spell-like abilities at divine caster level. Effects that extend life remain subject to her direct authority and are never automatic substitutes for divine favour.
Divine Powers, Domains and Sacred Treasure
Healing
Healing reflects restoration, longevity and recovery from the conditions that shorten mortal life.
Knowledge
Knowledge governs hidden paths, immortal lore and the wisdom required to survive contact with the deathless realm.
Luck
Luck reflects the extraordinary favour required to receive an immortal gift rather than merely desire one.
Protection
Protection governs the guarded borders of the western paradise and the defence of legitimate immortals.
Peaches of Immortality
The peaches of Xiwangmu’s orchard are divine gifts, not a repeatable crafting ingredient. A true peach can confer extraordinary longevity or immortality only under the conditions set by the Queen Mother. Stolen fruit carries divine consequences, and counterfeit peaches are a natural tool for cults, alchemists and rulers desperate to evade death.
Behaviour, Relationships and Divine Politics
Xiwangmu is generous without being permissive. She rewards worthy guests, recognised immortals and those whose long life serves a purpose, but she treats stolen immortality as a breach of sacred order. Her court is therefore both paradise and tribunal.
The Jade Emperor represents the organised celestial administration, while Xiwangmu preserves an authority rooted in older western and immortal traditions. Neither relationship needs to be reduced to simple subordination. Fuxi and Nüwa belong to other primordial and civilising layers of the divine world.
Where Worship Is Found
Xiwangmu is honoured in traditions concerned with immortality, longevity, sacred mountains, healing and transcendence. Her western paradise is strongly associated with Kunlun in later literature and art, while her image spread far beyond any single mountain cult.
Hermitages, alchemical schools, longevity shrines and courts anxious about succession may all invoke her. The most dangerous worshippers are often not monsters but rulers who decide that death is a political inconvenience.
Omens, Cults and Adventure Use
Signs of Favour
A peach tree flowers out of season; jade warms in the hand of a dying healer; cranes circle a mountain pass that was closed the day before.
Signs of Warning
Fruit ripens without sweetness; mirrors show an older face than the viewer possesses; a longevity charm begins counting years backward.
Stolen Immortality
An alchemist distributes a successful elixir, but every recipient now dreams of being summoned before the same western throne.
Celestial Dispute
The Jade Emperor’s officials and Xiwangmu’s attendants disagree over who has jurisdiction over a newly ascended immortal.
Adventure Hooks
- A single peach of immortality appears at a mortal banquet with no explanation.
- A jade invitation names a person who died years ago and orders the bearer to attend a western feast.
- An immortal fugitive asks for protection from Xiwangmu’s attendants but refuses to explain what law was broken.
- A mountain path opens for one night and leads to a garden that should not exist in the mortal world.
Mythological and Historical Context

Xiwangmu changes significantly across Chinese religious and literary history. Early traditions present a formidable western divine power; Han funerary imagery places her in the land of immortals, and later Daoist and literary traditions increasingly describe a majestic court, sacred mountain paradise and peaches that confer immortality.
Her longevity symbolism became extraordinarily influential. The peaches of immortality appear repeatedly in Chinese art, especially in birthday imagery and scenes where immortals gather at the Queen Mother’s court.
