Pangu is the world-shaper who forces heaven and earth apart and holds them there until the cosmos can stand on its own. Mountains, rivers and the deep structure of the world still remember his labour.

Worship in the Present World

Pangu is not approached like a courtly celestial official. His worship is strongest among people who work with the oldest physical substances of the world: miners, masons, mountain communities, deep-road travellers and those who believe the land itself can remember divine creation.

Rites associated with him favour stone, height, foundations, axes, pillars and the meeting point between earth and open sky. A Pangu sanctuary may be a mountain cleft, an ancient quarry, a cavern where no echo behaves correctly or a standing stone believed to mark the first separation of heaven from earth.

Divine Mechanics

Campaign Divine Tier 36 represents Pangu as a primordial creator rather than an ordinary giant. These deity statistics are campaign adaptations and deliberately exceed normal creature assumptions where appropriate.

Traits

Legendary Resistance (6/Day). If Pangu fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Primordial Mass. Pangu counts as a structure as well as a creature when determining what can move, restrain or teleport him. Effects that would move him against his will move him no more than 10 feet.

World-Bearing Endurance. At the start of each of his turns, if Pangu has at least 1 Hit Point, he regains 30 Hit Points.

Separation of Heaven and Earth. Extradimensional overlap, forced planar merging and gravity-altering effects within 120 feet of Pangu are suppressed unless produced by a deity or artifact.

Divine Spellcasting

Pangu uses Constitution for divine effects (save DC 32). His strongest portfolio links are Creation, Earth, Strength and Balance. Signature effects echo earthquake, move earth, stone shape, wall of stone and gate.

Actions

Multiattack. Pangu makes three World-Axe attacks.

World-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +25 to hit, reach 30 ft. Hit: 54 (6d12 + 15) slashing plus 22 (4d10) force damage.

Split Heaven from Earth (Recharge 5–6). Pangu strikes a 300-foot line, 30 feet wide. Creatures in the line make a DC 32 Dexterity save, taking 99 (18d10) bludgeoning and force damage on a failure or half on a success. The ground in the line becomes a chasm or raised ridge, chosen by Pangu.

Raise the Mountains (Recharge 6). Pangu reshapes a 120-foot-square area of natural ground within 300 feet. Stone pillars, ridges or ramps rise up to 60 feet. Hostile creatures in the area make a DC 32 Strength save or become restrained by stone until they escape.

Legendary Actions

  • Stride. Pangu moves up to half his Speed; this movement can cross nonmagical difficult terrain without penalty.
  • Axe. Pangu makes one World-Axe attack.
  • World Tremor (Costs 2). Creatures standing on the ground within 60 feet make a DC 32 Dexterity save or take 27 (6d8) bludgeoning damage and fall prone.

Divine Powers, Domains and Sacred Objects

Creation

Creation reflects the transition from primordial chaos to an ordered physical world.

Earth

Earth governs mountains, stone and the physical body of the world.

Strength

Strength expresses the impossible labour of holding heaven and earth apart.

Balance

Balance reflects the stable separation of cosmic forces after primordial chaos.

The World-Axe

Pangu’s axe is a symbol of division and creation rather than a portable treasure waiting in a tomb. A campaign relic associated with it might be a fragment of primordial metal capable of cleaving an impossible barrier, separating fused planes or opening a mountain. Such fragments should remain story-defining artifacts, never routine equipment.

Behaviour, Relationships and Divine Politics

Pangu is direct, patient and almost impossible to hurry. He understands creation as labour measured in ages rather than moments. Mortal politics matter to him only when they threaten the physical order of the world or mistake short-lived borders for structures as permanent as mountains.

Nüwa and Fuxi belong to other creation and civilising traditions; they are not forced into one literal genealogy. The Jade Emperor governs a celestial bureaucracy built within a cosmos whose physical foundations predate that government.

Where Worship Is Found

Pangu is honoured at mountains, caves, quarries, ancient stone formations and places where earth and sky meet dramatically. Formal temples exist, but many of his strongest sacred sites are landscapes rather than buildings.

Those who travel underground, cut foundations or build on unstable ground may leave offerings before disturbing stone believed to be part of the world’s oldest structure.

Omens, Cults and Adventure Use

Signs of Favour

A collapsing tunnel holds long enough for everyone to escape; a mountain path appears after an earthquake; foundation stones settle perfectly overnight.

Signs of Warning

Stone pulses like muscle; river courses shift without rain; stars appear lower above one mountain each night.

Primordial Cult

A sect believes civilisation has allowed heaven and earth to drift too close and begins raising impossible pillars across a province.

World Wound

An excavation uncovers material that is neither rock nor bone but behaves as both.

Adventure Hooks

  • A mountain splits open to reveal a chamber whose walls pulse like something living beneath the stone.
  • A fragment of primordial bone is being quarried as ordinary stone, and every block removed changes a nearby river.
  • The sky is descending a little each night over one valley, and old rites claim Pangu once held it apart.
  • A cult attempts to awaken a mountain they believe is part of Pangu’s unfinished body.

Mythological and Historical Context

Historic-style depiction of Pangu as primordial creator and cosmic giant
Pangu as primordial world-shaper, represented in the site’s historical-source image set.

The familiar Pangu narrative belongs to later recorded Chinese creation traditions rather than the earliest surviving Chinese mythic texts. In the best-known version, heaven and earth begin mingled together, Pangu grows between them as they separate, and after his death parts of his body become features of the world.

That later date does not make the tradition less important. It makes Pangu one of several overlapping Chinese explanations of cosmic origins, alongside traditions centred on Nüwa, Fuxi and other primordial powers.

Sources and Licensing

Pangu’s familiar cosmic-giant narrative is preserved through later Chinese creation traditions and should not be presented as the single earliest Chinese creation account.
