Kahukura — Atua of the Rainbow and War

Māori tradition · Double rainbow · War · Weather signs · Ambiguous omens
Kahukura is a Māori atua associated with the rainbow and with war. Te Ara records Kahukura among the personified forms of the rainbow and preserves a tradition in which he appears as part of a double bow. Like Uenuku, he can be read in the heavens before conflict, but Kahukura remains a distinct atua rather than another name to be collapsed into the same profile.

The Double Bow
Te Ara records a tradition in which Kahukura appears in the heavens as a double rainbow. The red lower bow is female, named Pu-te-aniwaniwa, while the darker upper bow is male, named Kahukurapango. This makes the rainbow a layered divine sign rather than a single coloured arc.
For campaign use, Kahukura is therefore especially associated with doubled or divided meanings. A rainbow may promise victory and warning at once. A sign may belong to both armies. What appears fortunate from one side of a valley may look ominous from the other.
Kahukura and War
Kahukura is named among Māori war atua alongside Uenuku and Maru, while Tūmatauenga occupies the broader role of war and humankind. Tohunga and war leaders may therefore seek signs from different atua according to region, lineage and circumstance rather than treating all war gods as interchangeable.
Worship in the Living World
Kahukura is approached where warfare, weather and interpretation meet. His signs are rarely useful as simple yes-or-no answers. The double bow especially reinforces the possibility that one event can carry more than one truth: warning and promise, victory and cost, one side’s blessing and another side’s danger.
Those who honour Kahukura pay attention to the exact shape, colour, direction and timing of a sign. The sacred skill is not merely seeing a rainbow but knowing when a visible phenomenon has become an obligation to interpret.
Pantheon Plane: Hawaiki and Ossa
The wider Māori and Polynesian divine network reaches into Hawaiki — The Ancestral Isles, an independent ancestral archipelago within Ossa — The Living and Remembering Sea, Arborea’s second layer. Hawaiki is a realm of origin, voyage, ancestral return and remembered routes across the living sea.
Across Hawaiki and the living waters of Ossa, Kahukura’s double bow can bridge islands, currents and remembered routes. The plane therefore gives his signs a literal navigational dimension as well as a martial and prophetic one.
What Is Kahukura Doing Now?
Double rainbows have begun appearing above places where old conflicts were never properly settled. The lower bow is bright red; the upper arc is so dark that stars can sometimes be seen through it even in daylight.
War parties approaching these sites hear distant shouting from empty hillsides. No one agrees whether the voices belong to ancestors, future dead or warriors who were never returned home.
Kahukura is sending signs, but the signs refuse to become simple answers.

Divine Relic — Te Tohu Takirua
The Twin Sign is an original relic made from two curved pieces of polished stone, one red and one nearly black. When held beneath the open sky, one piece warms before danger and the other cools before deception.
Once per week the bearer may ask a single question about an approaching conflict. The relic reveals two possible outcomes but does not identify which is more likely, forcing mortal judgement rather than replacing it.
Use Kahukura Tonight
- The Dark Upper Bow: a double rainbow remains fixed over a battlefield abandoned generations ago.
- Two Victories: rival chiefs receive equally convincing signs of divine favour before the same battle.
- The Missing Lower Arc: rainbows across an entire region appear only as dark upper bows.
- Voices in the Colour: warriors hear ancestral names spoken whenever sunlight passes through rain.
- The Unfinished War: Kahukura’s signs point toward a peace ceremony rather than a battlefield.
Relationships
Uenuku: another rainbow-associated war atua. Similar roles do not erase their distinct traditions.
Tāwhirimātea: the lord of weather provides the storm, rain and light through which Kahukura manifests.
Tūmatauenga: broader war and human conflict belong to Tū; Kahukura’s role is especially bound to celestial signs surrounding conflict.
