The safest way to beat an outsider is to make certain it understands the wrong question.

Jack arrives with muddy boots, a good memory for legal language and the smile of a man who has already won the argument. The locals tell of a magician who tricks a terrifying outsider in a succession of contests, leaving marks upon hills and rivers as proof of victory. Those marks are still there, and some have begun to move.
Jack o’ Kent is a figure of Welsh Marches folklore, documented in writing after the campaign’s date. The older legends are adapted here as real magical bargains. The Marches tell of Jack outwitting a proud infernal outsider in games and wagers. In this campaign that dangerous opponent is a powerful outsider bound by the exact wording of a bargain.

What Is Jack o’ Kent Doing Now?
One of Jack’s ancient wagers has been reopened. A spirit now claims the right to move an entire hill at sunrise; Jack has no intention of honouring the bargain, but his old wording may condemn a nearby village.
Encounters and Adventure Hooks
- Jack offers the party three wishes if they can find a witness older than the river.
- The boundary between two kingdoms shifts overnight, and every witness remembers a different map.
- A captive spirit demands that the party determine what Jack meant by ‘until the last leaf falls’.
Personality and Relationships
Playful, evasive, vain about his cleverness and strangely protective of the foolish. His favourite trick is to offer a listener exactly what they asked for—and nothing they meant.
Rural spell-workers, ferry keepers, frightened magistrates and an otherworldly claimant that has never forgiven a loss.
Equipment and Rewards
Walking staff, knotted thread, wax tablets marked with wagers, traveller’s pouch, small iron knife and an apparently ordinary pebble that refuses to sink. The NPC’s finest reward is an introduction, refuge, knowledge or a desperate favour: none is guaranteed to survive a double-cross.
Other Encounters
Jack offers the party a choice between a short road and an honest road. Both lead over the same bridge, but on the short road every traveller must surrender the name by which an outsider knows them. The bridge keeper cannot tell a lie; neither can the spirit waiting beneath the water. The party can win Jack’s wager by discovering exactly what the spirit is entitled to claim.

Mythical and Historical Context
The stories of Jack o’ Kent survive as Welsh Marches folklore and were recorded after the campaign’s date. His reputation rests on trickery, impossible contests and the shrewd interpretation of bargains, not on documentary proof that a specific wizard lived in 1454. The campaign makes those contests real while interpreting his supernatural opponent as an ambitious outsider rather than importing a later earthly religious account. Explore the recorded Jack o’ Kent tradition.
